I am expecting the top wing to need changing because it includes the upper part of the pod with the windscreen surround, and from what I can see that will need to be changed to accomodate the flat windscreen on the J/L. Obviously it is within Tamiya's ability to do some parts sharing with this F/G kit on a potential J/L kit, and they have a long tradition of actually delivering variations, unlike Hasegawa, but people need to understand that most of the big stuff changes: it's basically a new kit with some common detail components, not a minor modification to the tooling. Not unless we want it done wrong, as Hasegawa did in 1/72. Edited July 28, 2019 by Work In Progress

Work In Progress
Yes, that helpful review shows they have made the surround integral to the windscreen on the clear sprue
Masinissa
The review is pointing out that the gun barrels and tires are lacking, and that there's no engine or gun bay details? Really? Master barrels and Ultracast to the rescue! Ultracast makes the finest variety of P-38 tires out there, and it really won't be hard to pop some Master Barrels in Tamyia's P-38. I guarantee you the boys at Quickboost are sitting at the drawing board right now: Superchargers, barrels, seats, antenna, oil coolers, radiators. etc. Eduard made their Bf-109E and earlier family of Fw-190As with engine and gun bay details, but the majority of modelers aren't super detailers! Now since the Eduard Spitfires came out all Eduard kits are "simple builds". Oh you can buy the Brassin details and go at it. But lesson learned was make the kit basic and the rest will follow on. Eduard and Barracuda are also sure to bring out some nice resin for the kit as well. I'll probably end up buying this kit, though I should really wait for the 1/72 version as I'm running out of room quickly

Schweinebacke
Too bad that Tamiya didn't continue with a new F-4U4 Corsair following their excellent F-4U1 series. Tom

Stephen
I've had an email from an online retailer offering pre order for UK RRP of £65.
Work In Progress
Yeah, £63.95 is what I have been offered one for, against a £64.99 RRP. Nice kit for those who can afford it but I will happy enough sticking with the Monogram and Academy kits which I can pick up for £15 or so. However getting the kit from an eBay seller in Japan or HLJ should drop the price down to about $50 with shipping included. Hasegawa's and Academy's 1/48 P-38s are priced about $40 including shipping on eBay.
colin
I'll wait until they drop the price or are on offer somewhere, it's not that big of a aircraft in 1/48 for that price range
Work In Progress
Hasegawa is often expensive here but the Academy kits are frequently available on UK eBay for about £15. The Academy kit is better than the Hasegawa one anyway Edited August 5, 2019 by Work In Progress

Looks like the intercooler exhaust vent is on top of the wing tip! Nice The intercooler air intake is in the wing leading edge just outboard of the engine pod.
