Saab Viggen SH-37 1/48th

Recommended Posts

As usual from me this is one of my builds from a Group Build, this time the Specialist’s GB.

I’ll start off by saying this is a model to build only if you REALLY have to have a 1/48thViggen in your collection. It looks fantastic in the box but it’s a down hill disappointment as you build her, she’s not a straightforward build and in a lot of areas a real disappointment. Enough on that.

Heaps of AM stuff was thrown at this build and as I found 90% of it is actually for the Airfix/Esci model even if they mention this and the Special Hobby model. There are noticeable differences between these model so parts don’t quite fit.

The scheme…well it prematurely aged me by 20 years I reckon! I used masks and found out the hard way they’re really designed for the said Airfix/Esci Models! That aside the thing that saved this paint job was the paint I used. People that have followed some of my build know how much I rave on about this Acrylic Lacquer paint from Mr Paint. It goes on so thin and nicely and just gives an amazing finish, just what you need for difficult and complex paint jobs.

Anyway please enjoy

One of those schemes I feel I need to do one day to fully earn my modelling wings. You've done a very good job, looks great!

Beautiful result. The colors look 100% accurate.

thanks, I'd have to say a lot of it has to do with these guys and their paints, they're like nothing I've ever used before. I use to think tamiya paints were "bulletproof", the are in another league.

I've been talking to them and they're really keen on turning out high quality and accurate paints. I just wish I'd get paid for pushing their product!! :D If you can find this paint it's really worth the effort to try it out.

@Gary Brantley thanks, all those parts I used will probably work just fine with the Esci model, I know the masks will for sure!!!!  I build one of those Esci models many years ago and attempted this scheme using home made masks and brush! Didn't quite work out, but it was always one of those schemes I wanted to try again once I was capable. I do have to admit I am growing to like her a bit more each time I see her.

Am glad you like it, I hope I've inspired you to have a go, it'll be stressful but you'll know you've achieved something once it's done.

Superb SH! The livery looks just right (for a freshly painted machine – the 37:s weathered quite readily in service).

The SH version replaced the S 32C Lansen for maritime surveillance ('havsövervakning' in Swedish, thus the 'H' after the 'S' which stands for 'spaning' – reconnaissance).

The SH usually carried the SKA 24 camera pod bolted on, just like the model shows, but its long focal length made it suitable for taking photos of ships from head-on. In fact, the old Lansen with its battery of cameras took much more detailed shots of rigging, antennas and armament by passing the ship on a parallel course. The remedy was to pair the SH 37 with an SF 37 on marine surveillance tasks, with the SH locating the ships with its advanced radar and the dedicated SF ship ('F' for 'Foto' = Photo) taking the actual pictures.

Great modelling, and thanks for the review of Mr.Paint – I guess I'll have to test them now…

Kind regards,

Joachim

Very very nice.  I think the splinter really works well.  Nice photos too!

That turned out real well in the end!

The colors do look very nice to my eyes, and the weathering is suitable for a newish aircraft.

Great great work!

(even though the wheel chocks are the wrong type, and you forgot to hang the potty underneath the ventral fin 😉 )

It really is a stunner, you've convinced me about the paints and I'm up for a set of early War BoB  raf colours

you'll love the stuff, I've just ordered a whole pile of it for my Typhoon.
