Curtiss C46 Transportes Aereos Bolivar

Recommended Posts

I've really enjoyed going the extra mile with this great old kit.

I was steered in the direction of the Skytruck books etc and came across the exotic wonderland of South American Aviation.

WOW!

Spoiled for choice, I finally decided on CP-1267 with Transportes Aereos Bolivar, opened some of the doors, dropped those magnificent flaps and got some movement on the elevator and rudder.

Hand painted decor over the Ali foil and finished with laser printed decals.

This was my first attempt at this, and I am well pleased with how they went on.

An acknowledgement to fellow BMer obermartin who assisted greatly with the graphic design 👍

Loved doing the build.

If you have one in your stash, either dig it out and make it....

... Or PM me to discuss a sale /trade /swap!!!

That has come up well Rob, I'm not normally a huge fan of foiling but in this case I think it works quite well & has surely produced a stunning looking model. I have one in stock, not its not for sale & no, it won't be started for ooooh, a while yet, :)

Steve.

Thanks for the positive feedback, guys.

Doing the Curtiss has been a real pleasure, and opened my eyes to an interesting area of aviation.

The dear old C46 is barely mentioned in the standard histories . In Europe and elsewhere, the plane is completely overlooked, and overshadowed by the DC3s.

In the research, I came across an interesting diversion...

There was a mod tried that involved fitting a couple of small jet turbines under the wings - that ran on the same fuel - in an effort to boost the performance of the plane.

The Brazilian airline Varig tried this, apparently...

Some interesting info and documentation came up on the WIP

Good to see a civil C-46

Definitely, Trev!!

There's absolutely NO excuse to douse your model in olive drab or any other form of "beige "!!

stunner on your hands.

It's been a blast, Johnny.

As in your style, learning loads along the way. That's the point, isn't it!?

And laser print bespoke decor into the bargain.

So many possibilities....

I like it.

I get visions of nefarious activities taking place at remote South American jungle airstrips.

The plane's well-used finish seems to enhance the effect.  Very cool.

@kapam, well yes, there's been more than a few planes impounded over the years.

The Bolivian planes were mostly used for getting freight in and out of high, remote farms and regions in the Andes, before decent roads and infrastructure was in place..

La Paz Airport is at 13000 ft and that's before you even take off!

Beef carcasses were a regular cargo.

I'll put on a couple of pictures when Flickr is back up and running.

There was at least one B17 converted and used regularly in this trade, if you fancy doing a little conversion!!

Does this work....?

I love the battered metal appearance,....... very authentic,....... nice job,... reminds me of the Ice Pilots Buffalo Airlines series.

Here's some of the reference material I've been working from.

CP 1267 in the "maintenance yard" at La Paz.

CP 973 in the background.

That's the airframe that has been restored to airworthiness, completely renovated inside as a passenger plane and put up for auction earlier this year.

There's some great material available when you start looking for it.

I'd like to recommend "Legends in their own Time" as a resource.
