There was an Avenger Estate on an episode of Bangers and Cash. I think it had twenty odd thousand miles on the clock!

Twenty odd thousand more than I'd expect !

🤣

Hillman Avengers are quite rare I understand. Our local classic car dealer had one in about five years ago and there were only a handful on the road then. I had a lot of good memories about the seventies (not to say some pretty bad ones), but none about the cars, which never seemed to last long.

Harsh! I had a bright yellow Avenger GT which we took down to the South of France (Tourettes sur Loup) in 1981 to visit my sister. No problems at all except knackering a set of pads heading back up the Route Napoleon. We also went on the Hovercraft (remember that), were what we thought must be last car on but when we went back down to get it there was a Mini parked sideways behind it!

My Dad bought an Avenger new and says it was the worst car he's ever had. My wife had one as her first car and it was a rot box...  also, one of my sixth form friends had one as his first car, which was found to have cardboard and filler covering a hole in the floor.  😬   We had some rum cars in those days; another friend had a brown MkI Escort estate which was very bouncy and turned out to have no rear dampers.

Back on topic, saw a C-reg Porsche 944 yesterday.  Light metallic blue and looked good from a distance, but it was smoking rather a lot.

If this works (I'm never sure how to do it with Flickr), here's my Avenger outside my sister's then house up in the hills near Tourette sur Loup, after an "interesting" journey of some  900+ miles in 2 days (no Autoroute). Oh, and BTW, I don't look like that any longer (who said "Hooray!)

No Avenger stories from me (although I did see one last year at Spa), but I can at least continue the '70s theme with a very nice looking M-reg Ford Granada (or possibly a Consul, couldn't tell from the view I got) coming the other way on the way back from work. Sadly it was night time and the dashcam didn't pick it up very well, but I can say it was wearing a very 1970's colour scheme of yellow with a black vinyl roof. Always liked the Ford styling from the early 1970s.

I had a Wardance red Avenger Tiger in amongst all the Mk1 & 2 Escorts back in the 70's. Really liked it until I wrote it off....

There are "shames" and "shames" and that could be classed as a major one!😂

Mention of Route Napoleon brought back memories of hustling hired Renault Espaces up and down the Route following the Monte Carlo Rally back in the early 00's . What a road , what views . There were 3 of us , sleeping in the Espace for the duration.  Great days .

I was waiting at the lights after a visit to our local Repco emporium, sort of like Halfords I think, when 4 Fiat 124s drove across in front of us, two Sport Coupes & two spiders, one either an Abarth Rally or a darn good replica, complete with appropriate signage & lighting. I guess there was a Fiat thing on, maybe a specifically 124 thing, it made my day.

Out on an early morning errand last weekend with my wife here in Southern California, I couldn’t believe what we saw pulling off the 101 freeway: a bright red LaFerrari! Old guy was driving it very slowly like it wasn’t his and he borrowed it from a rich friend to impress his other rich friends at the local cars & coffee meet-up. I told the wife “I think they cost $1-2 million”, when we got home I looked it up and had to correct my estimate, more like $7 mil. Some people have way too much &$@#% money......

I saw a classic Mini van today, looked a bit scruffy but very cool.

Good to know you’re feeling so great about yourself, but what was the Mini van like? 😉

A friend of mine bought a brand new Avenger and was giving me a lift in it.

As we went round a corner, a wheel overtook him on the outside.

Seconds later the rear of the car hit the ground. It was his wheel.

The entire hub had broken off the car.

The only person I've ever heard of getting a 100% refund on a car...

Sporting a proper '80's look there @MR2Don 🙂 ....

I had no idea what an "Avenger" looked like, so thanks for that pic, it saves me a trip to Google. I must say, the name is better than the car itself. It doesn't look very superhero-ish...

  • 2 weeks later...

Today, an absolutely hideous Bentley Bentayga. As if the normal thing isn't bad enough, someone had added a full-on body kit including a massive rear diffuser. I will have it on the dashcam, but have managed to leave that at work (fortunately for anyone reading this). Anyway, just imagine a matt black version of this, and consider that it looked even more horrible in the flesh:

(I've just put the link in as I don't know the copyright status of the image).

Also saw one of those cars I bet most people have forgotten existed - a Nissan QX.

One might almost expect the front number plate to be relocated to the dashboard... that seems to be the fashion among people with no taste in cars around here.

Especially those with Lambo's, Ferraris, Mclarens etc who have enough money ro be above the law...

Around here it's mostly lowered Seats, Golfs and Ford RS types sporting that mod.  🙄    There's also a first generation Volvo S60 I keep seeing with no front number plate and a massive spoiler on the boot, still in gel coat.  🤣
