Spot of the Day Part 3

Recommended Posts

Popped out to the Yarra Valley, just outside of Melbourne, for lunch and some wine tasting. On the way home we had this following us:

p?i=9561345a321557840fa10cbadfb24d3c

Thought for a moment I'd had too much wine, but SWMBO took this photo to prove I wasn't seeing things. It was still hard to concentrate on the road!

Sorry, a bit blurred. I think SWMBO did a bit more tasting than I did. :)

Mk 1 Escort Mexico in French blue, on a H plate.

I don't remember ever seeing such an early one. They came out in November '70 but mostly I seem to remember J reg onwards.

Could be a private plate or a replica. My first Mk1 was on a G plate, in Electric Blue with Mexico badges....!! (it did have a 'proper' 711M Mex engine on twin 40's though....!! :) )

Mk 1s came on an F plate. Guy up the road bought an F plate, an ex fleet car from Fisons Fertilizers. All their ex fleet/rep stock were managed and handled by a chap I knew. My brother bought 3 ex Fisons cars. They sold them at £10 above bottom book. They also had some of the very first Cortinas. A schoolmate's dad had one, a 1200 Base model, I rode in it when it was new. The one I owned later was built in November 62, according to a label on the wiring loom.

Ah, the November 1970 thing referred to the Mexico. I thought they were still producing the GT back then.

I had a K reg Mk 1 but always wanted the Sport, with it's (gasp) 1300 engine! Even back then the Mexico was out of my price range.

Have you seen what they go for nowadays?!

Aha! Way back in the day, I had an "F" reg Escort 1300GT, to which I added 13x51/2J wheels from a Mk1 Cortina that wasn't going anywhere, so I was half way to a Mexico (ahem, maybe!!). Enjoyed that car, though, the 13" wheels speeded it up a bit!

I sold my first ''Mexico'' to buy a fully rally prepared 1300GT to run in the up to 1300 class on stage rallies. It had a lovely tuned little engine that was putting out just under 100bhp. and I have to say was one of the favourite Mk1's I had as it was really nicely balanced and you could drive most stages without hardly touching the brakes! Unfortunately the lovely little engine was also pretty stressed and it wasn't long before it blew up...!!

Other day saw a 2 door Volvo Amazon in red with white steel wheels and shiny chrome hub caps, bumpers and mirrors. It was an absolute stunner. Was on foot so able to have a good gander at it.

There were lots of interesting cars out and about today but this is the only one I managed to photograph.

Jaguar E-type Series 1 3.8 coupé; it sounded pretty good too.

That's a nice shade of Trainer Yellow. Not sure about the Golden Yellow stripe though :hmmm:

Very nice....I keep toying with a classic car, but not been swayed yet.

Just seen a Mk 1 Cortina in Orange.........with a yellow stripe! :owww:

It's a little bit more subtle than the blue-on-white version I had 30 years ago – perhaps I'm growing up!

That'll teach you for wearing that shirt!!

Do you know, that actually crossed my mind when I saw your new toy! Shame it's the wrong colour....!!  :)

It's a lovely car Nick, has she been restored or were you ultra lucky to find one in original condition like that? (although none of mine ever had chrome that looked that good, even when they were only 4 years old!)

More subtle? Are you colour blind?! And let's use the correct terminology of Daytona yellow with yellow ochre stripes, shall we....?! 🤣

I meant subtle in terms of the contrast between the two colours, Keith, the blue-on-white stripes certainly screamed out. I know Daytona is quite loud but more than acceptable! And that's the colour on the build plate. 😇

Yes, has had some work done a couple of years ago to a very high standard. All the panel line gaps are perfect; no wavy lines around the doors gives you some idea. Whilst looking, I found plenty of cars with front wings fitted at all sorts of weird angles and huge variations in gaps around the sides of the grill. This has also had the engine and gearbox rebuilt. If it had been completely original, I think I would have to have paid a lot more than I did so I'm well pleased! 😊

As birthday presents go, that Escort is right up there. Very nice indeed.

As for today's spots, just casually parked up at the side of the road were a 1929 Rolls Royce and 1926 Humber (and yes, I did have to look them up to see what they were!)

Dashcam shot, so not the greatest quality ever seen.

Just round the corner from this, there was the VW Type 2 Camper I see most days which is a remarkably similar colour to that Escort.
