Spot of the Day Part 3

Recommended Posts

At around midday on the M11 northbound, just south of Stansted, a faded and scuffed green single decker bus on a low loader.  Pre '63 Kent registration, and just discernible on the side was the Maidstone & District bus company signage.

Maidstone and district - originally Green & cream,
My bus company when I was at school.

Cheers,

Alan.

Two standout cars for me today; a Volkswagen Golf Mk.2 GTI 16V, that looked pretty standard and was a nice black or possibly very dark green; and a Jaguar C-type replica in Ecurie Ecosse blue (it belongs to someone I know, so I know it's not the real thing).

Yesterday , I too saw a Stag , this one S reg in burgundy & fitted with the factory hardtop .  Also , whilst driving back from the garage last night I just caught a glimpse as it went past of what I'm certain was a Ford Pop hotrod .

Not so much "spot of the day", but "quiz of the day".

On the road between Wethersfield and Sible Hedingham, two large, low, wide and throaty what I can only guess at as supercars. Two of them in convoy. I was motoring on one way and them the other on a twisty road, so no chance to see badges or much else, but they were finished in a lovely metallic blue with, I'm sure, an orange coach line down each side of the bonnet. The sound was very much that of a decent number of cylinders.

Anybody got any ideas? Are the colours a hint? Strange road to see two of such, nose to tail in convoy.

Not throaty, but going to work this morning this came the other way.

A Porsche Taycan - yes the technology is impressive but this is the first one I've seen in the flesh and my first thought on seeing it was along the lines of "Wow, that is one fat bloater". To my mind the sheer size, particularly the width, of this thing is what dominates the impression. It may be good on the track, and good off the line, but I don't think it will be comfortable to take down a B-road. Think I'll pass and stick with the Focus.

Overtaken on the way in to town to pick up the papers by a beautiful early 60's Studebaker Gran Tourismo hardtop in tasteful pale yellow/gold. "jus' cruisin'"

Been ages since I saw one of those !

If the orange is significant, were they KTM X-Bows? Just seen one out today myself. Not sure these are capable of having a coachline though!

Could be. I only got the briefest of looks, the orange is what I noted, but it may have been like that, I just said coachline to try to indicate. As I said, it's a twisty road, so I was concentrating on taking the corner and they just appeared out of the blue, usually it's Landie's or 4X4s round there! Two together, though - likely? This is rural Essex between two villages that you wouldn't visit unless you knew where you were.

Looking at McLaren's site, though, one of their blues looks a good match and their front end looks more similar. Presumably the owner could "enhance" the blue with a bit of orange if they wanted. I suppose more likely in the UK and more likely to see two.

I saw a proper, 1980s Porsche 911 turbo in Guards Red drive past, looking and sounding great.

I was able to grab a photo of this rather more humble Triumph 1500 that looked really tidy.

I walked to the shop this morning and on the way back I was treated to the sight and sound of a T-series MG (TA to TC type) in Old English White; it even left a very pleasant smell in its wake, not sure if it was unburnt fuel, hot oil or a mix of both.

Does anyone remember John Chatham sportscars?

They specialised in Austin Healeys

They used to be based in Bristol.

Now sadly. long gone...

:(

Cheers,

Alan.

This afternoon in Sleaford, around 3.30, I saw an olive green Vauxhall Frontera.  Not seen one of those for ages.  I thought that they had all died and gone to the great breaker's yard in the sky long ago.

Not sure what this was... any ideas? A Landrover Defender-like LWB 4x4, towing a boat to the dock in Amble. Looked only somewhat like a Defender, with hints of a G-Wagen, though. Very “origami” shape with sharp edges at all corners, proportions more like a hmmv: low and wide. Quite pronounced wheel arch extensions (again faceted) with a narrower main body. Upper body had an inward slope up to the roof. I wondered if it might be a demilitarised something or other made in Israel, South Africa or Russia...

best,

M.
