Spot of the Day Part 3

Recommended Posts

Spotted something today driving through Saltaire that I didn't recognise at all, and though I say it myself, I'm generally pretty good at Petrolhead I-Spy... Classic long bonnet, short greenhouse proportions, with a smattering of Ferrari 275GTB at the front and a back end reminiscent of a Cobra Daytona coupe, with a neat little ducktail spoiler. A bit TVR-ish but the nose wasn't as droopy. Not a big car, but definitely a modern-ish vibe and wearing a current-format plate (and no, I obviously misremembered or misread it, because I can't make the DVLA web site spit out anything sensible as a clue... it certainly wasn't a silver Citroen.) My best guess, after some research, is a Marcos TSO/GTC Coupe:

But I don't recall the louvres, and it seems a coincidence that I should see one of such a rare beast a few days after reading an article in Modern Classics magazine about one with a special tale to tell. Anyone with a better suggestion of what It might be (on an 09 or 69 plate...) feel free to pitch in! I thought it might be a Ginetta, but they don't seem to do a regular road car these days...

best,

M.

If I'm reading it right, that registration (T50 GT), as per MoT History, doesn't exist, so that's no help, but... if you read it as TSO GT, then we've got it, it's a Marcos TSO. In fact, if you Google Marcos TSO, there's that photo courtesy of pinterest.

Finally , whilst sat in the car outside the chippy I spotted the unmistakeable rear end of a Mk2 Cortina going up Welsh Row

I love the Cortina Mk2. My dad had one of these when I was learning to drive.

It was a 1600 deluxe in Saluki Bronze. I loved driving that car!

Cheers, Alan.

Last weekend saw a very nicely presented Ford Escort MkIII estate on a B plate. Car was slightly pimped in a rally style with spot lights, flared arches and fat tyres. Was very tastefully done and really suited the car.

Regards,

Could be a long shot as it's an even rarer beast than the Marcos, but it couldn't be a Bristol Fighter could it? (sorry, Wikipedia image is massive so I've done it as a link rather than a pic)

I've only ever seen one, so this would be a long shot, but pretty cool if it is.

Good thought @Spiny, but I think I’d have spotted those headlights. It was like a 2/3 scale Jaguar XK... similar proportions and shapes, especially tail, but it looked distinctly petite in regular traffic, which in my experience XKs definitely don’t... Thanks for trying, though!

Somehow I missed the bit about it looking like a Ginetta, which does raise the question of "Was it a Ginetta?" I know that they are mostly race cars, but I do remember seeing a road legal G40 for sale on Pistonheads a while back (can't be certain whether that was factory road legal or someone just did the mods needed to get it through the SVA). And a quick look found this one for sale:

Chelmsford today: black E type coupe driving in opposite direction; only time to notice what looked like widened polished alloys, I think trade plates and a significant roar. Looked very smart.

The other day , whilst at Morrisons petrol station in Nantwich , I was rather surprised to see on the forecourt a Citroen CX . It was a slightly rough round the edges 1980/1 Series 1 on a W plate .  It's so long since I saw one that it took me a few minutes to remember what it was called .

Today's spot when I went for a walk this lunch time.  A Plymouth Barracuda, the round tail lights mean it is a 1972-74 model and as it's badged Barracuda rather than 'cuda it should have either a straight six or "small" V8 of 5.3 litres (318 cubic inches).

While dropping the youngest off to work the other day a very pristine, as in restored I'd think, Citroen DS19 (pre 67. headlights on ends of wings) it looked very smart, dark lower half, white roof. His comment was what the hell is that!? I chuckled & explained them to him.

Lawn Lane, Chelmsford today. Only a brief glance as I was on my bike, trying to avoid potholes and with my glasses slipping down a bit (should I be allowed out?!?), but what I think must have been a very nice black Healey 100. Had the narrow almost "V" shaped grill, which I believe means it's not a 100/6, but it sounded like a six!

Emmm...this is interesting. I can't help it, always do it, just through curiosity, but that reg number belongs to a Ferrari 308 Dino (GT4) and it's MoT expired last July...unless it has very recently got one! Mind you, it's never had a failure recorded.
