Spot of the Day Part 3

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Yesterday, A Reliant Rialto (3 wheeled fibre glass car for our overseas listeners) with a Mustang grille badge on the grille!

Today in the early morning traffic, an R reg (1998) Ford Escort. Someone's getting their money's worth!

Today in London, a Wayve Jaguar iPace - driverless car albeit it looked very much as though the driver was in control when I saw it.

Far more interestingly, an Asquith Shire on a W-plate, although the condition was such that I suspect it was much newer. Shame I didn't think to get a photo of it

I had to google them expecting something from the thirties and didn't realise they were still being made, what a brilliant idea.....

On the A168 near Ripon a well used and knocked about Austin Maestro van! Not seen one for many a year.

I thought they had more class than that in the HG postcode area, must've just been passing through. 🙂

I saw one in Norfolk a while ago in Post office colours/markings. And i saw a very Brown Maestro in Lincoln last week.

Today in Stamford, a very yellow Merc SLR parked in a silly place with, predictably, the rear right corner caved in. Doh!

On the back of a local Jag repair specialist's (which I didn't know existed) flatbed, a very smart looking, gleaming black XJS - wonder what was wrong with it, could be vey expensive! And shortly after, another one of those common as muck now rarely seen cars - a tidy silver Peugeot 405.

A couple of days ago a 1967 Morris 1000 van in a mid blue, I suspect was not the original colour. Still not seen one for ages. Really surprised by the Maestro van, I would have thought they had rotted through a while ago.

Not half as surprised as i was when i saw it! Think it may have been beige at some point. Was pretty shabby and well used. Probably a farmers 'mule' for shifting stuff about i shouldn't wonder.

Beige being the favoured BL colour of the period. Mrs T shared a Y reg beige Metro with her sister when I first knew her. They lived near Ripon and notwithstanding it was only about 5 or 6 years old it was rotting away.

I had two of these (not at the same time!), and always loved driving them.

Superb driver's car!.

Today driving down the M42 south I got passed very quickly ( as I was driving a petrol tanker flat out 52mph! ) by a lime green Lamborghini Aventador closely followed by another Aventador followed by a Bugatti Veyron then two McLaren super cars I kid you not! I reckon they were showing off after they witnessed my lame attempt to overtake an Eddie Stobart truck which ended in failure! I regularly see the odd super car but  five in a row is very rare. When I got back to work I jumped into my Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer ( or estate car as that's what it is ) and drove the first few miles home like Andy Schumacher then the excitement wore off and I limped home along the M6. Now where did I put that lottery ticket?

Reminds me that we got ovetaken by a gorgeous burnt orange McLaren 540C on the M4 today - stunning thing! However on the way home westbound on the M4 we were passed by a lovely bright metallic blue Audi RS4 - and tbh I'd rather have one of those - at least I could get in and out of it....!!

I will be on the M4 tomorrow Keith going down to the Texaco terminal at Cardiff will keep my eyes open for anything unusual doubt I'll beat five in a row though!

Vince,

I looked it up too, and I think that one of those vans is featured in a recent episode of Escape to the Chateau, a CHannel 4 "reality" show.

Spotted earlier today (about 40 minutes ago),

A very tidy Jensen Interceptor/FF (not sure which). Haven't seen one of those for a considerable time.

Cheers, Alan.

Not so much a spot as a nostalgia observation. I was given a couple of old MOTOR magazines, one 1971 the other 1974. Today I looked read the 1971 copy.

Complaints therein included rust on brand new cars, notably British Leyland, It cost 14 pounds to replace a Cortina propshaft as the needle bearings were rubbish.

A garage hand used a customers car for the weekend. It was okay though, they'd disconnected the speedo so the mileage didn't show.

Used cars? How about a Mustang, 8000 miles, 1400 quid! A 3 litre Capri was about the same price. A year old Camaro was less!

And there was a comparative MPG chart in the back. Not much there giving over 30MPG. A Jenson FF was less than 10.

Don’t want to stray to far off topic , but when I was at school in the 80s , I read Autocar magazine and I could reel off all the performance figures from road tests in the back of the mag , better than I could remember my school work ! Porsche 911 Turbo 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds if I remember........

It wasn't new, but in 1976 I had a 1972 Escort Mexico that was as rotten as a pear - the shell was completely shot.

It did though have a superb 1760 crossflow engine running a big valve head, half race cam, twin 45 Webers and some other trick bits. Around town I'd be lucky to get 15 mpg, on a run about 20, but on a road rally it would be 6-7....!! But petrol (5 star!) was about 50p a gallon (yes, gallons in those days!!)

Driving along the A41 through Hendon today, I noticed a gorgeous Ferrari 275 GTB in the Hendon Way Motors showroom window as I passed. I think that one is slightly out of my price range though, even if checking the website later did show it as POA I don't need to ask to know I'd need a spare couple of million to buy that one. 😄

Possibly yesterdays rarity is a bit closer to my budget - I got parked next to an unmolested (at least visually) mid-90's manual Toyota Supra which has so far apparently escaped the attention of the drifters,

In the carpark of a local nursing home i visited on Monday was of all things... a black MG Maestro! With some rather poor looking modifications on the front end.

Steve
