A10 - with Warthog tusks - Finished

Hello all, for my entry I will be building Italeri's A10. The kit come with four decal options 2 European green schemes and 2 low vis grey schemes but one has the shark mouth and the later the snake teeth options. I haven't decided which on to build as yet as the kit is not right for a or c model. Just found the Print scale decal sheet which has an experimental camo with warthog tusks and nostrils, 3 tone brown camo looks unusual. Now that the Blackbird is finished I can get started on this one.

I bought this recently with a view to doing the Black Snakes scheme,  evil in a subtle way but I've been sorely tempted by the Gulf War one in the Euro scheme. I might need another. :) I'll be keen to follow your progress.

Just found that Hi decal do the same warthog tusked aircraft in 3 tone brown for half the price of the print scale sheet so that will be on order tomorrow. Looks to be a LASTE mod aircraft so adding and removing warning sensors will be in order

Quick update, the Hidecal sheet has arrived along with a Master gun barrel set as the Italeri moulded one was terrible. The Master set is a miniature kit itself, seven barrels, centre pin, 2 end caps and the shroud all in brass. Assembled the main and tail planes, sprayed the engine internals with XF56, cockpit is decaled, seat is almost finished. This is one of those that goes together quick but needs alot of fine fitting to get a good result from early indications.

The Tiger 2 in the back round will not be down range.

Started to stick the fuselage together and had a test fit of the wings, not to good really a large gap on both sides and the join around the undercarriage bays is going to need work as well.

There is also some confusion about the Peanut camo scheme I'm going for, once source reckons it was deployed to Saudi Arabia 1990 and another that it was only an experimental scheme flown in the US. So I will have to do more digging.

Started to sort the seams today, fuselage one not to bad but the engines are worse.

Same on the tail plane join, should hope fully remove some material and be a better fit. Still to remove some antenna as well.

Will have some filling and rescribing on the engine pods before they fitted.

First look at the last pictures, and my first thought was Italeri... they never disappoint... 😉

Italeri's quality control must have been on holiday when this one produced. The last model finished was Italeri's SR71, went together with no major issue but this one is going to fight me all the way

From what little i know about the peanut scheme. It was an experimental scheme trialled during Desert Shield at England AFB. It didnt go into production and the plane was repainted before deploying to Saudi Arabia.

This jives with my references also, although I believe the trial was actually at Barksdale.  Both were A-10 bases in Louisiana so it's very possible they were painted at one and operated from another.  I'm certain the aiframes involved were from Barksdale, as they feature that base's "BD" tailcode (at the time England AFB used the "EL" code).

There were actually two schemes in the trial, applied to A-10As of the Barksdale AFRES wing (917th TFW).  Both swapped out colors from the A-10's then-standard Euro I camouflage scheme of 2 greens (FS 34092 & 34102) and dark gray (36081), following the same pattern.

The "Peanut" scheme Neil is building uses desert tan/brown colors and included the full warthog tusk markings (standard on the unit's Euro I birds).  The other scheme, dubbed "Flipper" after the 1960s TV show dolphin, used three gray tones and did not include the "hog mouth."

For anyone keen to so the same scheme(s), the HiDecal includes markings for both options, though only sufficient common markings & data stencils for one or the other.  Several other manufacturers have also done sheets with one or both schemes in 1/72, 1/48, and 1/32, including Superscale and TwoBobs.

Been thinking what hang off the many pylons, ALQ119 and sidewinder on the outside pylons. Single AGM65 and a couple of dummy mk20 or mk82 on the inner pair, sounds plausable for a trail.

All of the above is in line with the references I have for Desert Storm . For combat missions the unguided ordnance was normally all the same type (i.e. all Rickeyes or all Mk 82s, not "mix & match") but AGM-65s and cluster/dumb bombs were carried together.  Also note it was rare for every station to be used, and standard practice was to remove the pylons on any unused stations.

The only photos I've seen of the real "Peanut" had no weapons at all but appear to have all pylons in place.  Of course since you're modeling a stateside "test" scheme you could justify pretty much any combination as a load trial or display load.

Done a test spray with the advised colours, 2 Humbrol and 1 Tamiya acrylic. Both the Humbrol colours sprayed badly, very grain like but I think I have suitable Tamiya replacements. Should be quite a eye catching scheme when done.

Tail plane went together well after a few passes of the file, engines are in place but had problems filling the large gap on the nose with Sqn Green filler but PVA glue has bridged the gap.

Will add the four sensors on the nose and tail next and need to clean upper the wing leading edge before that can go on.

Wings are on! the leading edge has been cleaned up and the inboard flare packs added to the under carriage sponsoons.  Managed to sort the gaps between the wings and fuselage when setting the wing dihedral angle. The seam on the nose is complete and the instrument coaming has been painted.

Next will be the canopy, tail planes and ordinance fit.
