Airfix 1/72nd Hawker Typhoon kit 55208

Hi All,

The boss has been good to me. After i had an unmitigated disaster trying to do invasion stripes with cut outs in the fuselage for the code letters which resulted in the kit going in the bin, she bought me another one. This one doesn't have invasion stripes being for april/may 1944. I'm not an expert but didn't typhoons have black and white stripes to save confusion with the fw190?

or can i build it as is.

I hope to return to the invasion stripes at a later date as i was kindly sent some decals by another member and want to do it,

thanks for any help,

cheers,

rodders.

Early production Typhoons had black and white stripes on the wings ( some on upper and lower, others on lower only) to prevent mis-identification with the Fw 190, as you say -as did a number of early Tempests. They were laid out in a different pattern to D-Day markings and I am fairly sure that by 1944 they had been all but discontinued.

I've never seen the early ID stripe pattern on the top wing, just underneath like the photo in the link. At one stage they had a yellow stripe fore & aft across the top wing about mid span & afaik, the underwing stripes were discontinued in Feb 1944 though there are photos of early Tempests with them too.

I recommend reading the scans here for when and why in markings

Also  Chris Thomas's article for Airfix is useful for sorting out airframe details,  the 72nd airfix kit is a 4 blade bubble top with Tempest tails planes IIRC, which will limit possible schemes

Rodders' query seems to be questioning the lack of stripes on Airfix Typhoon kit 55208 - the 'starter kit' that features ZH-Q RB478. As far as I can see they are completely correct and are typical of 2nd TAF Typhoons in the last four months of the war.  Also, Airfix chose that scheme as 266 Sqn was one of the very few units that used both bombs and RP during that period, so you can authentically fit either. Most squadrons specialised in either bombs or RP.

Further to remarks in the thread above, Typhoon identity stripes were only applied beneath the wings.  I have only come across one exception to that rule, namely the single radar-equipped Typhoon nightfighter which took part in FIU trials in November 1943.
