Shavrov SH-2 Amphibian

  • 2 weeks later...

Last update from the work's work bench.

Well, that's nearly everything primed now, so it's time to move the SH-2 home and towards the paint booth.

Parts still to be done are:

  • The main wing supports which I have decided to use brass strutz probably but I need to get things together so that I can measure the length of the supports as I have varying lengths.
  • Scratch a wind pumpy thing to stick on the front.
  • Scratch a pitot.
  • Rear canopy.

All looking very well prepared I must say. Should spray up nicely I reckon.

Cheers Terry, I hope so.

Well, that looks like the neat work of a man that know how to plan.

Cheers Moa, maybe I've learnt a thing or two from you. As a matter of interest, how do you go about scratching one of those windy pumpy things?

if you provide a photo I could suggest a way.

JWM posted this in my Discussion thread, it's the best I have.

I looks like a cylinder with a round nose, two blades but I'm not sure of size? Over to you Moa.

This might help:

Amphib wind turbine 1

I found it here:

If you scroll down there are some pages showing on the right, and that picture is near the bottom.

PS.  I have spare cycles you see Stuart, having temporarily lost my build space for a few days!

Cheers for the pic, may be useful to Moa who hopefully will be coming up with a cunning plan.

As for build space, I have a dedicated cave...and it's all mine :fight:, we have one spare room, visitors can fight over it :boxing:.

Well, we have three spare rooms plus the hobby room ......... and between us a VERY large family, which means that about twice a year, when all descend upon us, the hobby room gets a couple of airbeds on the floor ............  It's a design feature!

This is perfect. Making one right now to post.

Pull a comfy chair and a drink of your preference. Back in 30 minutes.

Kit Instructions call for Humbrol Linen as the overal colour but I'm not sure. This photo seems to point to something different? The winter clothing is white, as is the disk (that you can just see)and that the fuselage 'red cross' sits on. Ideas please.

Well as you say, you can just see the faint outline of the white disc, so it could very likely be linen overall. Linen always seems to come out pale on old b/w pictures? But then when you look at the engine housing, that seems to match the airframe. Would they paint that in linen to match? Tricky one.

Here it goes, a wind-driven generator a la carte:

(Adapt to size, shape, etc):

Styrene rod of proper diameter:

IMG_5843+%25281280x960%2529.jpg

Shape the rod into a cone using a sanding stick and and a rotating motion:

IMG_5844+%25281280x960%2529.jpg

Cut off:

IMG_5845+%25281280x960%2529.jpg

Drill a hole big enough to pass the blade trough:

IMG_5846+%25281280x960%2529.jpg

Now round the "nose" using a again a sanding stick or sponge:

IMG_5847+%25281280x960%2529.jpg

Cut off:

IMG_5848+%25281280x960%2529.jpg

Glue the two parts together:

IMG_5849+%25281280x960%2529.jpg

Glue a support, stem, or drill (previously, not now) for a wire:

IMG_5850+%25281280x960%2529.jpg

Cut a very thin strip from rigid aluminium:

IMG_5851+%25281280x960%2529.jpg

I use the ones on good quality coffee, milk or cashews. It's thin but very hard:

IMG_5852+%25281280x960%2529.jpg

Shape the blades as per your requirements:

IMG_5853+%25281280x960%2529.jpg

Using two tweezers, twist 90degrees:

IMG_5854+%25281280x960%2529.jpg

Once the assembly is dry (or even painted, let's say for the sake of argument, black), insert the blade and position it to look like a prop, at the proper angle. Fix with a tiny smidgen of cyano glue:

IMG_5855+%25281280x960%2529.jpg

I didn't time myself, but felt much less than 30 minutes.

Make two or three, chose the best.

Exactly the same method I use for the Rotherham pumps on my models. It works, and empty beer cans are not at a premium. I don't drink canned beer, but plenty of people at my local bar did so I nicked one of theirs!

..this is 5mm long and I need to make it nearly half the size. Is that going to be possible?

The smaller of the two I posted is 3.5mm long. It would be a real challenge for me to make a 2.5mm long one, but I guess it could be done (if I get back the eyesight I had when I was 20)

You obviously have time on your hands

The same as everybody: 24hs a day (well @Martian Hale has a day of 24 hours and 37 minutes on Mars, so HE got some extra time)

What I do have is the inclination to help, not of an abundance or excess of time, precisely. I rather be building a fifth model together with the four I am working on now.

Don't worry too much about the rounded front end and drilling it. It looks as though your metal prop blades are rather thick too. Here's what I got with just a slight twist on a piece of soft drink/beer can aluminium stuck on the front of a bit of roughly shaped plastic rod. Cut a thin strip, shape the ends as needed, then hold it in the middle when a pair of thin tweezers and give each end a twist. CA it to your piece of plastic rod and voila. This is my 1:72 Bristol M1.C and the "prop" is about 4.5mm end to end.

With the naked eye you won't even see this much detail!
