TBD-1 Devastator, VT-8 last attack leader, Midway 1942

Recommended Posts

Hi comrades!

Here is another one of my past works

It's GWH Devastator - fantastic kit built OOB with some modifications and Eduard brass, National insignia painted.

Most critical areas to update in the kit - wheel wells and main undercarriage legs (must be shortened).

Great build and weathering!  Any areas of construction to watch out for?  I just picked up the kit after watching the movie "Dive Bomber." The movie has great color footage of pre-war, soon to be early war, navy aircraft, including the Devastator.

Cheers,

Mark

This kit has very good feet, 99% of parts just "clicks" on place.

I recommend to short the main undercarriage lags and add the brass in wheel wells- see photos.

The most sensitive area - wing leading edges because of surface structure - it's very easy to make the damage here and very complicate to restore the details.

And I recommend to paint the national insignia, because I don't trust in decal solvents to be effective on such "extreme" surface of the wings.

And, as usual, some errors in coloring guide (in my example propeller tips were wrong colored, I painted them according to the period photos) - check your reference, TBDs like all other types of USN planes changed the markings frequently in the beginning of the WWII.

That's all I remember now.

And I'm here for future questions on subject.

Beautiful Devastator. I like the colours and level of weathering.

I have one of these squirrelled away in the loft - tell me - are the photo etch wheel wells included in the kit? I too would be interested in what paints you used for the basic colours.

Cheers

Thank You!

I have this set of Gunze MrColor for exterior of USN WWII aircrafts.

Color on TBD is C367. I believe, now all the paints available separate, You don't need to buy a set.

No, in kit it's just empty. The parts are from Eduard set (exterior) for the GWH kit.
