Today’s  (April 20) Daily Telegraph Magazine has an intriguing offer in the ‘Travel Solutions’ page:

A two night tour called ‘Magnificent Men in their flying machines’. I quote: “Discover the history of Shuttleworth Old Warden and Duxford aerodromes which are now operated by the Imperial War Museum’. Enjoy the pageantry of a historic air show and a short flight on a De Haviland DH 89 Dragon Rapide ...” . The italics are mine.

I hadn’t heard that the Shuttleworth aerodrome is now operated by the IWM, and suspect that it isn’t  I rather feel that the copywriter responsible for preparing the advert was confused

Or ... does anyone have knowledge about Shuttleworth not generally known?

I strongly suspect that it is a reflection of

a) the ignorance by the media of most things aeronautical

b) sloppy writing on the part of the reporter/columnist doing the piece.

c) lack of effort in any meaningful research, even looking the respective websites would have told them about ownership.

A lot of the news media seem to rely on press releases as the perceived demand for 'instant' news has to be met. Also too many outlets are chasing too little money and they cannot afford specialists

I worked in aviation for 40years, 30 of them at Heathrow and some of the press reports on incidents I had personal knowledge of bore little or no relation to what had actually happened. My pet hate regarding stories from ‘ aviation ‘ correspondents was of delayed aircraft being held ‘ on the runway ‘.

I am afraid the days of “Our Defence Correspondent” or similar who might just have some background knowledge of the said subject rather than intimate knowledge of some celebs bra cup size is way long gone. I can’t overly blame the journos though as if Joe Public didn’t buy the crap they would stop selling it.

I hope I haven’t confused everyone, but I was referring to an advertisement for a two night trip including visits to Shuttleworth  and Duxford in August, organised by, it seems, anorganisation called Travel Editions.  I can’t work out from the advertisement what the connection with the Daily Telegraph is, apart from the newspaper publishing the advertisement, along with two others.

Even so, the misinformation in the advertisement is shocking. As Mr. T points out, basic research by means of the Shuttleworth and IWM websites byTravel Editions would have identified ‘ownership’..
