A kit you built as a kid GB Chat

I think that you're right Paul, and in a way that would be a great thing for a couple of reasons. The first being that we had so many entries and the second being that this has really been about taking a huge trip down memory lane and revisiting some of the classic kits we built way back when so to have a winner wouldn't seem right as we have all gained a lot from this GB, I know that I have, and so has Ebay!

If Enzo pulls his finger out and finishes his F-15 that is one less required.

I have certainly given eBay a flogging lately! I'm hoping for some kind of loyalty bonus this month!

I didn't realise that they were ESCI kits but I did like building them.

I also remember the look of dread on my friends face when I turned up at his house to play soldiers and produced newly completed models of the King Tiger and Jagdtiger which his Chaffee and Shermans didn't stand a chance against!

I did the same thing with a Katyusha, and was accused of cheating ! 😁

I think that we just played against bad sports Pat who didn't realise that they were up against the 11 year old incarnations of Rommel or Patton.

My Nan and Grandad lived at Chingford Mount, so I remember Arts and Crafts and Rossi's (owned by the family of the bloke from Status Quo). I also used to buy stuff from Sid Rich at Bridge Models, but there were a few more in Walthamstow - Arnold's Gifts in Hoe Street opposite the Rose and Crown (a toyshop with a good selection of kits), Russell's at the Bell Corner (a combination bike shop and model shop), Lea Models down towards the Baker's Arms (mostly model railways, and they had their own OO scale white metal bus kits called Pirate Models) and Telford's in Wood Street (another classic model shop). Other shops I remember selling kits round that way were a toy shop called The Doll's Hospital in Walthamstow Market, Diamond's newsagent at the Crooked Billet who had a good stock of Airfix, and another shop whose name escapes me on Hoe Street next to the photographic shop at Greenleaf Road. Of course, there was also a Woolies in Walthamstow Market as well as the one at Chingford Mount.

I never went to Beatties in Southgate as a kid, but did go to the one in Holborn on occasion, and more often to the one at Wood Green that opened around 1979. About the same time I started going to H J Walker in Homerton High Street, which did a lot of specialist stuff - people might remember their ads in early issues of Scale Aircraft Modelling. They moved to Leytonstone in about 1983, but as I was 19 or 20 by then, it doesn't count as being a kid.

Time for a quick stock take from me.

I failed with the Sunderland, Skyhawk and T34.... Boo. But the F4 and a few others went well... Hooray!

Enough Panto stuff, it's summer after all.

A most enjoyable GB with so many top notch models appearing along with all kinds of memories. I had a great time from start to finish. Thank you organisers, you did a great job.

Here's my completed models...

I thought for a while that my entries might fall by the wayside.  But no...   they'll be in the Gallery.  Maybe on the last day of the GB, but that's situation normal for me.

Blimey @Richard Hummgreat call on Russells on the Bell Corner, i used to the always make sure i sat on that side of the bus so i could look at the kits in the shop window.

I remember the shop seem to be closed or at least not open for a long time still with all those kits in the window all the boxes having faded in the sunshine.

I do hope they were rescued when it finally closed.

Remember that well! My folks would occasionally drag me into Romford on the train from Southend for laborious day's worth of being dragged around endless shops. However, it would usually end with me being allowed to buy a kit from Beatties to ease the trauma. A Matchbox Bf-109E and Bristol Beaufighter were a couple of sweeteners that I bagged. Don't know why, but I still remember travelling back home on the train staring at the box art of the 109E, the glorious sunset of the artwork contrasting with the grey and drizzle outside the carriage window. Funny the things that stick in your mind.

I've been slow on the updates for the last few days. Blame some good weather (finally!) which I had almost despaired of seeing again this "summer".

The good news is the Skyray, DUKW and Puma will all get finished by Sunday, and I should have more pictures of all three tomorrow. The bad news is the Lysander won't get finished before the gallery is locked. It will probably take another week or so. Also, any plans I had to build an ESCI AFV have also been scotched, but it will resurrect itself for the forthcoming MTO build.

I was in "panic mode" for the last couple of days*, but all three kits are (hopefully) now well in hand to be finished by early this evening. A deadline concentrates the mind wonderfully. There are some decals to apply to the Skyray fin in a couple of hours once the paint on the tail has dried. Other than that, it's "just" detail painting and touching up, but there is quite a lot of this.

*Technology issues sidetracked me for at least a day, good weather for a couple of days more.

The final Sunday is here and the end of an very enjoyable GB not just my builds but the comments, chat, memories and the great builds. Thanks in particular to @Dansk and @modelling minion who have regularly popped up in my thread as well as others. There will need a rest after this,

In my last entry on the Bristol Bloodhound I mentioned it having play value. As this is the "kit I built as a kid" how about "the kit I played with as a kid" including pictures of airgun practice, setting fire or just trying to see if your latest creation really does "Fly Right Of the Ground". In my case you can add the model that your mother tried to hoover / dust - although in that case penance was that I got a replacement kit!

Phew. last one in the gallery. Three builds started AND finished which isn't like me at all. Loads of fun, and it's been great reading everyone else's builds and the memories and stories they've inspired. Thanks to the hosts and all the other builders for a hugely enjoyable GB.

I'm taking the rest of today off. Back to work and my five other GB entries tomorrow :D

This has been great fun. I think that's 7 completed from me? That's more than I've built in the last year 😀

It would have been more. I left my Monogram Wildcat in one of our buildings that was then embargoed because of legionella in the water supply - how's that for an excuse? I've got it back now and I will build it. I'll also build the Ju-88 just for the fun of it.

Big thanks to the hosts.

We should do this again 😱

And a big thank you to yourself John, this GB just wouldn't have been the same without you and your great builds.

Yes we should, but lets leave it for a couple of years so we can all recover first.

And for once, I did what I said I'd do, as my recent posting frenzy has shown ...

I will now lie down in dark room for a few hours ... wait, that sounds a lot like a night's sleep. No rest for the wicked I suppose.

But I will take some time to re-organise and clean up. There are dozens of tins of paint that need to be cleaned and sealed, and put back in their proper storage box. And lots more to be done besides.

Damn, I thought I was doing well with 6 completed. I guess I shouldn't have dithered so much during June and July. I'd have finished the Matchbox Lysander on time (it will get finished, honest), and built an ESCI AFV as well.

Thank you for asking me to help out Paul, this has been a fantastic GB from start to finish. I have never enjoyed a GB as much as this one and have learned so much about some classic models, some of which I hadn't heard of before. Doing this with yourself and Glynn has been a real pleasure and if you want to do it all again in a couple of years then I will be right there with the two of you.
