RAF QRA through the years. Hurricane finished 24/06, page 9.

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Here is a project that I've been planning for some time and one which will run along side other builds for the foreseeable future. Quite simply, it's a homage to the RAF's Quick Reaction Alert and some of the aircraft that have been used in this role from 1940 up until the present day, in 1/48 of course . So without further ado:

Best to show each chronologically ... so first up, Tamiya's new tool Spitfire MK1, in the markings of 19 Squadron (X4474) during the summer of 1940:

47516512171_6a896accd2_b.jpg

Not much aftermarket here as the kit looks simply outstanding - Xtradecals and an AML paint mask (and the obligatory Squadron patch!)

Decals and paint scheme:

Next up, Airfix's new tool Hunter F.6, in the markings of 92 Squadron (XG226) in 1960:

Again, not much aftermarket other than a Quickboost seat, Xtradecal set and some paint and canopy masks which I'll get once they're released (Squadron patch also to follow!)

Decals and paint scheme:

Airfix EE Lightning F.1 is next, in the markings of 74 Squadron (XM143) in 1962:

Quickboost seat, Montex canopy masks and QMT FOD cover is all the aftermarket that will be used.

Decals and paint scheme:

Followed by a Revell (Hasegawa) Phantom FGR.2, in the markings of 56 Squadron (XV470) in the late 1980s.

46792707304_d4440f8ccd_b.jpg

47463781362_24bbed2422_b.jpg

Aftermarket includes Quickboost seats, Airwaves canopy etch, QMT FOD covers, Montex canopy masks and Eduard etch (patch to follow...)

Decals and paint scheme:

I'm not the biggest fan of the sharks mouth on this jet, so will be doing XV470 a bit earlier in its life. She'll be fully loaded with 4x Skyflash, 4x AIM-9, 2x fuel tanks and SUU-23/A cannon pod.

Revell again; this time their recent Tornado F.3, in the markings of 111 Squadron (ZE158) in the mid 2000s.

47463777582_8402e00bef_b.jpg

Eduard etch, Pavla seats, Model Alliance decals, Master pitot tube, some RBF tags, resin BOL rails and wing seals cast by Shaun, along with 4x AIM-132 from a Revell Eurofighter (spot the patch).

Decals and paint scheme:

47516513551_2bf88858ce_b.jpg

She'll be fully loaded with 4x AIM-132, 4x Skyflash or AIM-120s (to be decided) and 2 gas bags.

Finally, Revell's Eurofighter Typhoon, in the markings of 1 Squadron (ZK306) in 2018.

32574145417_ba1a03bc77_b.jpg

Aftermarket here includes an Airwaves seat, Eduard Etch, Phase Hangar Resin FOD inserts (not pictured) and numerous Xtradecal sheets to cobble together to get the right markings and tail code.

Decals and rough idea of paint scheme:

47463779572_83a58cb40f_b.jpg

Will be fully loaded with 4x AIM-132, 4x Meteor and 2x fuel tanks.

This ought to keep me busy! As I've said, this will run along with other builds, which will mainly be Group Build entries. There'll also be several firsts in this for me; first 1/48 Spitfire, first EE Lightning and Hawker Hunter (in 16 years of modelling!) and the first time I'll spray Xtracrylix. Should be an interesting ride

Fantastic! Brilliant idea, these will look awesome, albeit in a few months' time I'd imagine! I have all these in the stash too except the Typhoon. Are you tempted to add the Airfix Meteor F.8 to the line up?

Thanks chaps, looking forward to seeing how it progresses. Won't necessarily be building them in the above order!

Thanks mate. I had't planned on a Meteor, the only other example I'd considered was a late war Tempest (for scrambling against V-1s) but I've limited it to what I have above...for now!

You could always at some more QRA types to keep you busy......... Buccaneer, jaguar, vulcan? 😊

Let's not get carried away! Going for pure air to air here

Great theme and one I've long considered too. I started thinking about it after seeing this photo of an echelon which was flown out of Coltishall for the RAF's 20th anniversary of the Battle of Britain in Sept 1960.

image_content_9769325_20180402083418.jpg

The formation comprises Hurricane IIc (LF363), Spitfire PRXIXR (PM631), Meteor F.8 (WL164), Hunter FGA9 (XK136/A) of No 74 Squadron, Javelin FAW9A (XH894/R) of No 23 Squadron and Lightning F.1 (XM137/F) of the Air Fighting Development Squadron. It's almost possible to do in 1/32 scale although I still need a Fisher conversion for the HKM Meteor, But who knows these days? By the time Paul recovers from the California wildfires last summer there may even be a big Javelin on the horizon.

It would need to be updated with a Phantom (but FG1 or FGR2?) The HKM big Spey Phantom was recently confirmed to still be in development. A Tornado F3 (old Revell F2 cross kitted with the newer IDS) and Typhoon FGR4 all serve to make it mostly doable in big scale, given patience.

I think you will find that the Gloster Javelin is missing from this lineup?  I am sure they stood QRA  in the late 50's?

Selwyn

It did, just didn't include it here!

Great idea, I do like the themed build plans that modellers come up with - just don’t ask me for mine!

You need a Q shed or HAS to park them in.

I'll be getting some sort of display base for each of them, wouldn't have room for a full HAS!

Fantastic idea, you have your own QRA GB going on there.  If you are also doing other builds alongside, I reckon a few years work there.  Good luck. :like:

Plenty of plastic! The longer I take, the more I time I'll have to find some space to display them 😀

This is a very ambitious project and just the right amount of AM-goodies. Will follow with great interest!

Thanks mate. I may add a few more bits here and there.

I do indeed! But I'm only building a selection

Nice.

Lived in Leuchars for five years in the 70s, the sight and sound of Lightnings and Phantoms heading out over the North Sea was the background to my childhood.

Never had the privilege of seeing either fly. Maybe my 5th RIAT this year will have one of Greece's F-4s flying (one can hope)

Growing up in Northern Ireland, all I heard were Gazelles, Pumas, Lynx and the occasional Chinook!

There's a Sabre missing from this selection, a 66 or 92 Sqn jet would go nicely with your collection.

I never really appreciated just how big the lightning is compared to both the Tonka and the Toom, nice collection BTW.
