RAF QRA through the years. Hurricane finished 24/06, page 9.

Recommended Posts

Decals on today. The only items used from the Xtradecal set were the serials, 'U' lettering and the 92 SQN emblem on the tail. The rest of the decals are from the kit. Took a while to get all the stencils on! I had to butcher a few of the warning stencils for the front fuselage; the 56 SQN jet wasn't RAFG based, but the 2 Sqn option was so had to chop a few of the stencils that are in German and add them to the model. They're not low viz like the rest but will have to suffice.

Sealed in with another coat of Pledge. I also popped on the upper aux doors.

Will leave everything to cure until Sunday when I plan to get the panel wash and flat coat on. If all goes to plan, might be able to get the weathering done and the landing gear on.

More soon.

Thanks chaps!

More done today. Panel wash went on early doors:

Excess was removed after about 45 minutes. Once that was done, I gave the model 2 light coats of MRP matt varnish and left to cure for a couple of hours. Once set, I made up a heavily thinned mixture of Tamiya smoke with a drop of flat brown, black and clear orange for the weathering. Once dry, I popped on the FOD guards, missiles, landing gear, fuel tanks and cannon. Cockpit masking was removed and we have this:

The heavy staining on the undersides was based on a number of reference pictures of both FG.1s and FGR.2s:

Just need to add the green tint (or is it blue?) to the centre portion of the front windshield, add a few bits of etch and then pop on the remaining odds and sods:

More soon.

Looking nice and grubby. Spot on. It was often said, if a Phantom stopped leaking, it was empty.

The windscreen wasn't tinted really, it's just  light refraction through laminated glass. Usually looks more green than blue.

Cheers mate!

I’ll give the windscreen a light coat of green.

Tempted to start my FG1 straight after this one now, I know it wasn’t included in the line up for this but I’ve got a Phantom itch . Either that or the Hunter...

Calling the Phantom done. Quite happy with how it's turned out!

The project so far:

More photos in RFI here

Thanks to all who have followed/commented so far and to those who have helped with the Phantom, with special thanks to  @Phone Phixer, @Jabba and @coneheadff for helpful information provided throughout.

Now I was going to start on a FG1 in the stash, but decided to stay on task - Hunter found it's way to the bench:

Will be marked as XF526 of 56 Squadron:

A start was made, namely in the cockpit. The Eduard etch adds some lovely detail as usual:

Quickboost seat vs a hastily built kit seat:

Cockpit popped in and fuselage sides prepped. The full intake trunking is nicely done and fell into place:

Once that had set, I closed up the fuselage. No issues with the fit:

Finally for now, fuel tanks assembled:

More soon.

Superb Phantom, and cracking straight on with the next one. You're a machine!

Thanks mate!  Figured I should try and get another one done before I commit to several group builds later coming up  A few rest days from work also fits in nicely with some time at the bench!

Managed a few hours at the Hunter today.  I noticed when adding the wings and exhaust trunking that the fuselage appeared to be a tad warped. Nothing major but meant a bit of filler was needed here and there. But as I say, wasn't much of a drama. The main lading gear parts pretty much just clicked into place. A few other bits were added also, including the 'bumps' behind the front landing gear bay. I'm guessing these are magazines for the cannons, or perhaps a spent casing collector? Pardon my ignorance if that is way off!

I popped on the rudder and set slightly off centre as per a few pictures I've seen:

I've a few questions for the Hunter experts; for a QRA jet, would the flaps and ailerons be deployed or retracted? Ventral airbrake open or closed? Thanks in advance!

Lovely kit this.

More soon.

Flaps and air rake would be “UP” and “IN”, control surfaces would be neutral or as near as.

With regard to one of your earlier questions the two bumps behind the nosewheel bay are link collectors for the guns; the ammunition tanks are on the top of the gun pack and, when installed (the gun pack is winched out of the aircraft re-arm) the ammunition tanks are behind the cockpit rear bulkhead.  These were introduced as the links between rounds were damaging the undersides of the aircraft when the guns were fired, the links simply being ejected from slots below the gun breeches.  The two pairs of small cylindrical protrusion adjacent to the aft end of these bumps, popularly referred to as Sabrinas, were the cartridge case ejectors and had to be extended to get the cases clear of the boundary layer for the same reason.

That's great, thanks for the info mate, exactly what I needed! Much obliged.
