1/72 Airfix Wellington IC

Recommended Posts

Dear fellow Britmodellers,

after a longer absence from the workbench I'm reporting back-in-charge with my 1/72 Airfix Wellington IC!

I used Eduard's interior set, Quickboost wheels and DK Decals, representing an aircraft from 311. (Czech) Squadron in 1943.

All photographs by Wolfgang Rabel.

I decided to install all the interior parts, literally recreating the aircraft from top to bottom. This process takes up most of the construction time, but you will be rewarded with a very detailed inside.

Of course, you won't see much once the fuselage is closed.

The model was painted with Gunze/Mr.Hobby acrylics.

I am not very happy with my paint job, I should have paid more attention to pre- and post-shading, as the surface looks a bit plain and boring.

Even the crew's entry ladder is supplied by the kit.

Superb rendition of the FN turrets.

Open side windows on the canopy - another nice feature of the kit:

The bomb bay can be posed open or closed, and six bombs are supplied.

That leaves the middle bomb bay empty.

I added three bombs, borrowed from an Eduard 1/72 Spitfire kit.

The red rings are airbrushed, using small strips of Tamiya masking tape.

And I forgot to peel the center mask off the bombardier's windows…. !

Scratches on the engine housings were replicated with a soft pencil.

Airfix' wheels are slightly oversized and were replaced with resin items from Quickboost.

The triangle-shaped waist gun windows are included on the sprues, although the instruction sequence does not mention them. The guns are included as well.

Hi My Friend Roman!!!

Congratulations for this superb addition to your masterpiece shelves!!!

Have watched this superb building effort, and in truth have watched the tasks of build a kit like this one with all that things in and out, with a subtle wash, and nice discreet weather is great!!! I liked the way you have approached the build of this gen of a kit, but the job you have done is what have given life to the build.  You may think that in this case your performance is not what you really wanted, but according with my eyes and what Cduckworth and mahavelona, and others that followed after them, the build is really superb!!!  Remember the hiatus you leave since you started the build until you ended this one, and think that when you started the build you thought one way and when you retake the job after a long time, your appreciation is another. Keep on my friend and go ahead with another masterpiece to keep surprising us and don’t be too critical to your own work.

Thank you very much for sharing!!!

Cheers,

Luis Alfonso

I don't see a reason to be disappointed with the paint- she looks great to me! Maybe, maybe a little exhaust staining would possibly kick it up a level, but what you have portrayed is a Wimpy with not a lot of hours on her; nothing to be ashamed of at all; I only hope mine will look as good as yours! Well done!

That is very nice, Roman. The Wimpy is a very characteristic aircraft and you've represented it beautifully. My old mate, Aussie Archie Innes, who flew them in WW2, would have loved it. Sadly he is long gone but he had countless stories, most of which I've fogotten. His most regular thing was that "if you lose an engine in a Wimpy you come down like a bag of sh@t!" :). A great bloke and a great aeroplane.

Absolutely not! Your paint job is excellent. You've produced something that looks realistic and in scale, which in my opinion is far trickier to do in 1/72.

Don't confuse 'plain and boring' with subtle and restrained!

That's a very nice Wellington. Just one thing though. If you do another one. The cockpit should be black and the rest on the interior between the metal cage should be a washed out red canvas colour. However you really don't see much of it anyway so it isn't an issue.
