T-45 Goshawk

Hi Chaps,

I really enjoyed the 2 Hawk builds so with my Meteor NF11 nearly complete in the Specialist GB and  another 2 weeks before the Lockheed GB I've decided to go for a 3rd entry to this GB.

Subject will be the US version T-45. There's only one scheme seen so far so unless I find some pictures of the prototypes then this will be white and red.

The kit today. Box crushed in a suitcase last summer between the big H and Bangkok.

I made a start on the T-45 last night and now can see why there's so much  criticism of this kit. My comment would be 'unnecessarily complicated '.

A lot of tiny parts could have been moulded into larger ones for little loss of detail but easier construction. My kit seems to be suffering from the bends. This might have to do with the crushed box but I suspect not.

These should be flat!

Nice choice of subject Colin. A beefed-up Hawk with a colourful coat on. Hopefully the kit isn't going to offer up too many challenges.

Cheers Col

The biggest challenge so far is the very fine mouldings and brittle plastic. I managed to break several parts cutting them off the sprues. A task made harder by the design. I have never come across a kit with an injection gate on the scissors to an undercarriage olio. That's a challenge on its own. Also huge pins inside the jet pipe, very strange.

The Airfix intakes and exhaust are 10mm deep and look fine but this has full trunking for intakes, an engine and full exhaust. Why? Very strange.

Meanwhile

Though it's been a little challenging it's actually gone together quite well. The rear cockpit bulkhead needed a trim to close the lower seam but this is essential to allow the wings to fit later. I also trimmed the fuselage joint at the bottom to clear the wheel bays. A piece of sprue pushed out the fuselage sides to join the wings roots and match the intakes. I didn't bother to fit all the trunking as per the previous post as the exhaust fitted into the fuselage sides quite well.

I buiit the wings fully including the flaps and then connected them to the fuselage. Whilst this was drying I glued the intakes to the fuselage and pulled it all together using rubber bands as below. The top sprue is pushing the centre section down to eliminate a step at the front of the wings.

Well back to the action. I spent most of the weekend on my Meteor NF11 in the Specialist GB but did manage to get some paint onto this.

Cockpit done in light aircraft grey with the very excellent instrument panels and coaming added later. I used the resin rear deck and seats left for the 5th Airfix kit which sped me up as far as the canopy.

Oh dear. Not 1 but 3 massive cracks in the canopy.

Hmmm. I have a few options but certainly I'll be slower now.

I bought a pile of vacform canopies for my Airfix Hawks so after messing with the broken canopy for a while I decided to use one of the vacform ones. After cutting the basic shape ready to fit i dipped it into future and it looked like a good option. In my box of old pe i found a Hawk canopy breaker which I have never used. I painted the buff line then shaped the pe to the inside of the canopy and tacked in in place with some Future. Once dried I gave it another few dips to secure the pe. The kit middle screen was then fitted and secured with more Future.

Here's how she looks.

Good enough to use so fitting now.

To celebrate the centennial of us naval aviation, I believe a couple where given special schemes based on pre-war yellow wings. I think I have some colour profiles somewhere, I will try to find them.

Well we're back to the action this weekend after a few weeks away. I finished the canopy which almost fits but there was a lot of filling sanding and polishing required.

Once all done she's now had a few coats of Tamiya 1500 white primer and a coat of Mr Colour US Navy white gloss 316 to match last year's Tomcat.

The undercarriage units are pretty much done so masking to paint the Orange next.

I got a bit carried away with the painting handle and pushed the exhaust up into the fuselage. So there was a  reason to fit the ducting after all!

Never before on Britmodeller has so much masking tape been used on such a small model.

I painted the fluorescent orange using the recommended paint colours from the Mr Colour lacquer range. The instructions recommend 90% yellow and 10% red which gives a vile pink. This is 90% red and 10% yellow in contrast to the leading edge which is 100% red. These new kit manufacturers amaze me every time. They seem to employ the finest engineers for the kits and then school leavers with no experience to write the instructions. Grrrr

I realised time is marching on for this GB so I decided to have a good go over the weekend. Fitting the undercarriage should have been easy but I noticed that some times the main gear and extreme nose doors are open as per the instructions, but often and when landing or slats deployed, they are closed. As i wanted to show the difference between variants of the Hawk i decided to close the doors. The mains went in with a simple trim but the nose needed to be fitted and sanded. This then required the nose to be repainted with white then Orange. Quite a tricky task considering the advanced stage of the rest of the model.

Nose doors added and filing complete. Best to do this before final paint.

Anyway job done and looking quite attractive.

Decaling next then minor details to add.

Good news is that the white is dense enough to go over the orange without any discolouration .

Lots of bits to fit yet but getting there.

Well we're over the line with the Goshawk as my 3rd entry to this GB.

Obviously the tail plane is fitted with the air brakes and assorted aerials and lights. Wings are set to the landing configuration but I decided not to lower the hook.

Some of theselook quite dirty so I gave it a wash with thinned burnt Siena oil paint to pick out the panel lines and break up the solid white colour of the fuselage.

The kits flap design is much better than the Airfix attempt and presented fewer challenges.

Thanks for looking and again thanks to the mods for support and encouragement. .
