Frog/Novo Miles Magister

Hello All,

I'm in! I have a ton of work stuff to do between now and the end of the build, and a couple of boxes full of training goodness (this, Pegasus Master I, Frog/Novo Master III, Frog/Novo Oxford, Frog/Novo Proctor) that are candidates. So I'm starting with something simple and hopefully quick. I think I built this from balsa when I was about nine or ten, it being the simplest shape from Aircraft of the Fighting Powers Vol 1. There are newer and better kits out there I believe, so I will try to improve it a little as we go along. I'm intending to do an all-yellow version, serial L8338, as pictured in the book. Here's the real thing, courtesy of Wikipedia commons:

So, what have we got?

59511651-F7-BF-416-B-B44-E-8-E8-FD5-D85-

Fuselages have a moulded-on blind flying hood, which I have removed to replace later. The ding in the wing root is not me, it's a moulding flaw, honest!

90687481-108-D-42-F1-A620-FA66-C5-A9-C6-

Insides got a scrape down to remove the moulded in part number and a big ejection pin mark:

E1325-E8-E-0-A8-F-4555-8119-2-A0-E2-DD01

Wings and tailplane went together nicely, with the elevators slightly drooped (so I didn't have to prop them up while drying...):

Starboard side doors and hatch were scribed using the raised kit lines as a guide:

D8-C42-DD6-0356-4-D5-A-941-C-E88-CA62698

The back of the cowling was scribed to represent the gap:

E3-FB4591-A23-E-4-A78-B7-BE-0-E7-D7-E429

The vague inlets moulded on both sides of the cowling were removed. I'll get that sink mark later!

87-C9-C434-ED74-4-DC0-9-DF0-5-A16-CB4-A4

The anti-spin strakes were also removed and will get replaced with card later on:

C4-C331-C4-36-D3-4-F93-B226-98-A102-B6-C

Cockpit time! Some freshly-stretched sprue for the internal structure:

360-C1-F0-C-04-AE-48-C3-890-F-59-DCB32-E

(It was only after that I remembered this is a wooden aeroplane and so it doesn't have a tubular internal structure)

Floor and wing root blanking plate over the top of the two floorlets provided by the kit:

9-D130-CC6-2-C29-4486-AEB6-086-B2-D20379

Bulkheads courtesy of trial and error fitting:

4-AA63151-79-B0-4-C65-89-EB-70-A8-B46403

Control panels same:

B87-ADDE8-0968-49-A5-9-AE3-1189-AA033-CE

Seats. I have seen pictures of nice leather seats, and I quite liked the kit ones, so I scribed up some leatherwork:

440-F9241-9185-4-E10-AC47-7-F7-FADB6-B90

Some card and stretched sprue details:

1-AAA3285-F540-46-FC-858-B-E6033-DF9181-

Compasses are slices of an overspill pip off the end of the old Airfix Seaking door runner. It's good to have a spares box!

New inlets and a hinge from stretched sprue bits, hollowed out with a file or scraped down to a half round:

4-DA91399-B88-A-4-B1-B-9-BDB-770-AE8883-

Wine bottle foil belts and a splash of Hubrol's finest acrylic:

8698-FFD0-AF4-C-4-C10-B802-8523-DE172-C7

And ready to close up:

C0-B3-C0-BC-36-B8-469-E-A606-87-F6246888

Thanks for looking,

Adrian

Coming along very nicely. :like:

I’ve recently acquired an original Frog boxing of this kit, which I am saving for another GB. I shall keep this thread bookmarked for some handy hints and tips!

Trouble is, I gotta have spats:

08-C2-EA79-2038-4698-AB0-E-279-F9-ABA4-F

Three laminations of 40 thou sanded down.

Seems to match my reference:

589-D2694-E0-A1-400-A-A752-186-D1-A020-A

And on, together with the anti-spin strakes. Time for some filler and supper!

I’ve cut out a slot for the exhaust too. Yes it would have been easier to do it before sticking everything together!

Well, that wasn’t meant to happen:

E312-E308-86-B7-4-D0-A-93-B3-20-AEF45366

I was using PPP and smoothing it off with a wet earbud. It was all touch dry so I thought a first coat of yellow was in order. On the couch now trying to catch up with Endeavour (when the WiFi starts working)

Well the yellow has had a few more coats and a lot more sanding. I realise that I don’t have any roundels small enough for it so I will have to print some (and the serials) when I get back at Easter.

Adrian

  • 2 weeks later...

Home at last. We talked about software and video encoding for a week and a half in Las Vegas, and we gave away about 2000 of these:

15-AD6296-AAA1-4-CBC-9369-24609-CD96-D9-

Back at home I had to mend the loo and turn the small meadow at the back of the house into something resembling a lawn. The joy of homecoming, eh?

I think I have enough yellow on now, and I took a leaf from Stuart @Courageous‘s Sea Fox build to make a front cylinder behind the cooling aperture:

8-CC81712-E11-A-4396-8-D10-A5-F4050-B04-

The cylinder is made from the peg that serves as a seat in the Airfix Thunderbolt, wrapped in a strand of electrical flex wire.

Thanks all!

I was looking for serial number decals when I found these:

A975764-B-03-E9-48-F9-BA5-C-347-DF815-F2

which meant I could do this:

37493-C75-5-BC3-49-F6-A426-2-C3985-D1-B0

I had checked my 1939 onwards A type roundels but I’d forgotten the inter-war ones.

On to serials. I may try out the Lazertran inkjet transparent-with-oil-varnish paper today rather than waiting for a laser printer on Tuesday  because suddenly I’m feeling lucky!

Thanks for looking,

Adrian

Well the Lazertran inkjet decal carrier dries to a fairly opaque white. The instructions say that if you coat the decals with water-based varnish the carrier will stay white, but if you cover them with oil-based varnish the carrier will go clear. I’ve never had much luck with oil-based varnish, so I thought I would give this a go:

4397-C638-5769-4214-8-BA7-12412-BEF8608.

it works!

DE9-BF0-CC-1920-4724-A4-E3-953-F5-AB84-C

Props to Mr William de Coster over on the Hyperscale forums for attacking his decals with this.

but if it goes a bit wrong you had better clean it up before it eats through the paint and plastic:

517-AF9-B6-139-C-4-EFC-A73-A-8-EEF3385-E

Yes, you may ask me how I know! I should have let it harden until tomorrow, then sanded, painted and waited etc. Nah. Let it dry during dinner, sand-paint-decal-extrathinagain:

663-BECF7-5-AF7-4-C4-F-850-D-91-FC81-F36

Front window shield painted, rear shield adorned with some aluminium tape.

So tomorrow there will be a bit of weathering, more for the control surface and body hatch emphasis than for dirtying up, because I undersand that the training units kept their kit in good condition. Gallery after that!

Thanks for looking,

Adrian

Nearly there

If I’d remembered I had inter war decals before I went away I might have finished by now. But I would have laser printed the serials and wouldn’t have discovered the Tamiya Thin trick, so it’s swings and roundabouts..

go find me a Frog Magister

Recommended! The Novo ones are just as nice, mould-wise, and the Miles Master And Percival Proctor are also cracking weekend kits. The Frog Oxford looks a bit strange around the canopy, but I have a Cunning Plan (if I get the time...)

Adrian
