Canberra PR9, XH168, No. 1 PRU, RAF Wyton, 1986

Recommended Posts

Canberra PR9 XH168 was delivered to the RAF in May 1960, and served at Wyton with 13 and 39 squadrons during its career as well as 1 PRU. The aircraft moved to Marham with 39 (1 PRU) Sqn in December 1992, by then in a hemp colour scheme, serving until bursting both mainwheel tyres on landing in September 2003. Fortunately the crew walked away, although with the impending withdrawal of the type from service the aircraft wasn't repaired and instead used for spares to keep the remaining ones flying.

This model shows XH168 as it appears in the mid 1980s while based at Wyton with 1 PRU before the unit was renumbered 39 sqn.

The kit is OOB except for my scratch built cameras, and some extra decals very kindly supplied by @Mikey-1980 and @canberra kid. The wire aerial will be fitted shortly, I haven't forgotten!

This is a really nice kit from Airfix, I was impressed with the fit and overall quality - tempted to get another to do hemp. The fairing on top of the fuselage around the cockpit area needs a lot of sanding but other than it fits well.

I had an issue with the Tamiya green bubbling on parts of the grey on the fuselage, but after sanding, buffing and respraying I managed to make it look more acceptable. I used a bit of dark dirt wash underneath.

Excellent work mate and nice to see a couple of jets pictured together as we don't often see that. Just thinking how the Canberra doesn't half make the Tornado look pretty small. Looking forward to your Phantom next.
