Kitty Hawk 1/48 RF-101C VOODOO... complete build

@LorenSharpThe detail in the canopy wells is just gizmology, small trick to make things look busy. It's small meat compared to your Moonbat. 😜

Last elements before the build's slowly drawing to its end: landing gear, burner cans, aux tank,...

Rings around the burner cans are covered with kitchen foil for added realism:

Camera windows are replaced with celluloid from old slide transparancies. Not exactly authentic but boy, does it look cool 😎 !

Our 101 is shown in asymetrical configuration with only one belly tank as was often the case with Voodoos. Hope you like it.

Next step: weathering and patina.

Until then,

Cheers,

Quang

Definetly, Q :). Nice work for sure.

This is one fabulous job, quangster, Its amazing what a little bit of wire and plastic rod can do.

Wire and plastic rod are staples to us old timers 😉

@David H @RidgeRunner @Nikolay Polyakov Thank you for your kind words.

Sorry for the grainy pictures. I made those quick shots to check out the ‘sit’ of the model. I will make better photos with a proper lighting once it’s finished.

Cheers,

Quang

@Wez @Beaconroot Thank you guys for your kind words.

In any case we are nearing the end with this last step: weathering and patina.

I've never been adept of the Spanish school of pre and post-shading, nor the current trend of black basing and marbling method.

Instead I use 'glazes', thin coats of transparent paint built up one on top of the other to deepen, enhance or subdue the base colour.

'Real' artists use oil paints diluted in linseed oil – or liquin – to achieve the sought-after transparency. We, modellers, will use Vallejo paints mixed with Future/Klir/Gauzy because it's cheap and it dries fast.

The result is not always perceptible especially on web photos, but is evident when one makes a side-by-side comparison.

In any case, here are the pics. They're not perfect but at least they're not grainy. I hope you like them.

Thanks guys.

I’ve received inquiries about the small plane zap on my Voodoo’s nose. It did exist!

I got to go. Looking for a new project 😎

Really cool result, you've really done this classic shape justice.

Alan

It wasn't the quickest build but I enjoyed it thoroughly. I learned a few things and made some new friends on the way. That's what it's all about, isn't it?

Think I'm going Navy next time. Maybe a F9F-8 Cougar or a F3H-2 Demon to keep up with the McDonnell vein. What do you think?

Cheers,

Quang

PS: NO, not a Vigilante. My desk is too small 😜

Quang,

Either sounds great so whichever you choose, providing you share your progress on here, is fine by me!

F9F-8 is a Kitty Hawk’s, so it would be very interesting; he Demon is cool-looking, too - I like them both!

Always liked the Demon myself for the interesting shape, and the Cougar is just beautiful, I wouldn't know which one to choose.

I know, I'm a great help.

Haha! I have the Cougar in my stash waiting to be built and painted in Sea Blue Gloss ( a first for me).

On the other hand I always wanted to do a Demon with the pesky, pointy Sparrow 1 in VF-112 livery.

B91-E7-E97-46-E8-4-ABC-89-AC-398971-C3-C

Hobby Boss did that version but managed to pack it with the wrong box entitled F3H-2M (which in fact contains the short-tail F3H-2).

So if one of you have a spare VF-112 decal he wishes to part with, please PM me. It would be greatly appreciated 🙏

Cheers,

Quang

Keep on the good job !

But it's a shame to sell a modern kit with such inaccuracies !!!!

As long as modelers keep buying them, those companies will keep making them. There is no financial incentive for them to do quality work, IMHO.

I don’t know about you but I’m getting older and I cannot afford to wait forever for a manufacturer to make the perfect Voodoo.
I’d rather get what’s available however inaccurate it is and build it in my own lifetime. 😉

That's all you can do.  Just found this tread and your Voodoo looks superb :worthy: In fact I'd go as far as awesome. :like:

At 66 years old, I can sympathize with you. I have the KH recce Voodoo in my stash, but as much as I'd like to build it, I have MANY other kits in my stash that are accurate, and won't require excessive time and effort to make them. So the Voodoo will stay on my unbuilt pile for quite awhile, along with a bunch of inaccurate Kitty Hawk, Kinetic, Trumpeter & Hobby Boss kits. I am not asking for them to make PERFECT kits, just do some research and make an effort to make correct models. If scores of other model companies can do it, they should be able to, as well.

Just my 2¢, which ain't going to Kitty Hawk any time soon. 😠

Agreed with you.

Yet... sometimes we need to be reminded of the original purpose of a (our) hobby.
It is to invest our time and money into something we do for sheer pleasure.

For the 45 euro I paid for the KH Voodoo, I had months and months of pleasure correcting, building the kit and entertaining my friends at BM.
A very cheap and profitable hobby indeed considering how many evenings at the pub 50 dollars can pay you.😜
