That canopy looks ace, Ced! :worthy:

I'd say you brush paint those markings instead of using the reluctant decals - it's still going to be OOB...

Nice work Ced, she’s flying together! I think the devil is going to be exactly that, not looking fun on that front! Can’t be any worse than the tigers head on my academy p-40, might as well made it out of card it was that stiff.

That canopy looks spanking, as does the NM finish,

any top tips for canopy mojo -ing?

Box on as if you need egging on!

As others have said, the canopy looks great.  How did you find the masking?  I ask as I am building the HB P-39 as a side project to my Seasprite and spent a frustrating hour or two trying to mask the canopy, the frames are so faint and flush with the surface it is very difficult to see where to apply the tape.

I’d leave the devil off the nose, it was applied to the aircraft at a later date than the ones on the radiators so I think you could get away with it.

Nice metal

The bottom of the fin, decal, maybe port sides of both?

If you wanted the devil you could cut him off the body and paint the background, quick and dirty

Then Daco the life out of his head to place it down

Nice metal anyway, bodes nicely for my British Lightning

Great work there Ced.

Those decals look a bitch, so go with what you feel comfortable.

Simon.

Thanks Simon :)

Thanks Strickers and Andwil :)

No tips for increasing the mojo but I use Paul Budzik's method - stick on the tape, burnish down and use a curved blade (#15 for me) pushed along the frame; you can see where you're going.

For badly defined frames I use Bare Metal Foil (NMF) or painted Filmoplast book repair tape.

Thanks Bill :) I like the paste and don't forget you can airbrush it, thinned in white spirit, if you want a more even finish.

Also thanks to Bill for putting me on to watercolour pencils. I used a black one to mark the demarcation and then a red liquidex pen on the rest:

All done now:

Just the nacelle windows and under fuselage lights to do. What colours are they, anyone know please?

My eyes have whiplash keeping up with this Ced - looks right mercurial in those all those lustres and badges!

I'm just wondering how far off the day is when the number of aircraft on your ceiling is officially entered in Jane's as a bona fide air force? 🤪

Anything to do with partridges in pear trees? ;)

That is looking magic Ced, I've been peeking along the way & I'm impressed like anything. I'm seeing a solution to my quest for a decent affordable Lightning in one if these.

Pecky and Bowlegs? Two aircraft in one build?

Ian (confused)

Not unknown for American planes to carry two names.  I may be wrong but I believe there were planes named by the pilot on one side (port) and the crew chief on the other.

Final stages this morning. Out with the Kristal Klear to Komplete the lights:

A couple of minutes work:

… followed by twenty minutes cleaning up the sticky mess that seems to collect, for some unknown reason, on the threads and makes the pots really hard to open next time:

I'm calling this done and she's now in the RFI section.

A few shots I didn't use there:

I forgot to mention how GREAT the canopy fit was. I really like the idea of molding past the frames to a panel line so that you have a nice, straight seam for a strong and easy join.

What's next? I think I'll build the Airfix Harvard kit that I used parts from for the Wacky Wabbit. There's a trainer GB on you know.

I'll link here later.

Thanks as always for your help, support and companionship chaps - much appreciated :)

Yes, I came across similar information while looking into USAF planes in Korean theatre. I expect the practice started in ww2 and carried on.

Also, for the kill tallies or missions, those on the port side apply to the pilot, and the starboard side is for the aircraft.

And these could be quite different as crews rotated and planes changed hands.

Thanks Rob, interesting background :)

I've started a WiP on the Harvard II in the training GB here.

It's the old Airfix kit with the Pavla AM cockpit (gulp).

Come on over - all welcome!
