Hunter Rose
Ooookay, so why have 2 projects on the go when I can have 3? Thats totally not stressful! Basically a friend bought me a wing gundam zero model from his trip to Japan about 4-5 years ago IMG_20190321_134236 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20190321_134416 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I always liked the idea of it having real looking wings, and black like a raven but after thinking about how to make the wings I just kind of had other projects so forgot about it. Flash forward to now and I happened to come across these on ebay: - IMG_20190320_135426 by Nick Frost, on Flickr As soon as I saw them this project popped back into my head and I bought them immediately! And to be fair they are a sweet part, and are surprisingly big, popped them off the sprue straight away and then snapped them together to see how they look IMG_20190320_135019 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20190320_135351 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20190320_135358 by Nick Frost, on Flickr This model will be in a fixed pose and when I've positioned the wings I'll use greenstuf to sculpt more feathers over the joins and connections so they look like seamless real wings. Plan is to get paint him black all over and then pick out areas in shades of very dark grey, I want the wings out and fully extended, kind of how they are in the above pics and have him holding the twin rifles that wing zero has. So next up I'll just start snipping the bits of the sprue and getting him together. Thanks for looking, more soon
rockpopandchips
Cool project, raven are one of those birds that have that iridescent petrol colour that would be cool to replicate.
Hunter Rose
Yeah that is a really cool idea, but I have no idea how I'd do that! Was actually thinking I could spray over the black with a light coat of alclad hot metal violet, a purplish sheen would be good and I guess that might look similar to that
Pete in Lincs
That sounds good to me.
rockpopandchips
Have a look at the paints from Greenstuff or try ebay for some Mr Crystal color purple both are great paints with interesting effects.
Hunter Rose
Wow thanks for the links dude that Mr crystal purple is amazing! New plan, I'm getting a bottle of that and doing him black and purple 👍
Dazzio
This sounds like a good project. Think I'll tag along for this one. Sounds like Zero is going to end up looking a little like the one from Endless Waltz. I did always like the artwork for Zero from Frozen Teardrop. Looking forward to more. Kind Regards Dazz
BrokenWorlds
Would you be better off with the Wing Zero from Endless waltz instead? The kit you're using is pushing 25 years old now and they've released some really nice modern Wing Gundam kits since then if you want to build off of the TV series Zero (https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10255379) . The Endless waltz kit is almost as old as the one you have there but slightly less dumpy.

Yeah I know they are a LOT better these days, this is one I just had in my stash that a friend bought for me a while ago, and I do like making an old kit sing! Just been mostly snapping him together, got him all of the runners now. IMG_20190330_125740 by Nick Frost, on Flickr A smaller pair of wings is included, but I dont like them tbh, they're small but also I think the joints and joins are just too prominent and bigger is better! IMG_20190330_142429 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats where he is at the minute, I'm still waiting on my mr crystal paint to arrive the land of the rising sun, and next up I'll just sort out the only major seam lines which are on the legs and head (fill/sand/prime) Thanks for looking, more soon
rockpopandchips
Definitely the larger wings, they go with the massive shoulders pads, very 80's😎
rockpopandchips
The larger wind also reminds me of condorman, if anyone remembers that very bad film from back in the day.
Hunter Rose
Oh blimey Condorman! Yeah I remember watching that as a kid, cheesy film but he had a cool car as I recall
BrokenWorlds
Making old kits look great is a lot of fun. I started on a Sandrock and then a month later Bandai announced a brand new Sandrock kit in the same scale.. Hopefully you don't suffer the same fate. Looking pretty nice so far, maybe worth extending the thigh area with plastic card to balance the larger top with a longer leg length
Hunter Rose
Aside from the wings, not doing any physical mods to the kit, just the new crazy paint job. Speaking of paint my mr crystal amethyst arrived! And its pretty wierd looking paint, its a creamy colour but when the light catches it its purple IMG_20190405_133601 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20190405_133639 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Thats basically the effect you get when spraying it on gloss white, like a pearlescent effect, but when sprayed on black it gives a really iridescent metalic purple finish. So to start with I did a test spray using alclad base gloss black as the undercoat. IMG_20190405_133342 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20190411_132812 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Im really over the moon with this colour, its really cool the way it catches the light and gives a seriously vivid finish. I also bought the Moonpearl mr crystal paint, which is basically like a crazy shiny dark silver which I will also use on him. Basically he's going to be a mix of the metallic purple and silver, and matte dark/medium grey and gloss black. I'm really looking forward to getting this paint scheme together! For now I've still got the head/leg/forearm seams to deal with before painting gets really under way, so thats whats up next. Thanks for looking, more soon
Hunter Rose
Right, little update time! I'm very near to completing the purchase of my first house, so with all the stress of that I've not had much time to model, but I have managed to squeeze a bit of painting in on this guy. I still need to fill his head and limbs, but all the waist bits are fine so I have just decided to paint them just to get an idea of colour scheme (and to make me feel like I'm getting somewhere!) Started by giving all the bits a black gloss undercoat and then masked off the bits for the purple colour IMG_20190502_133941 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20190503_133646 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20190503_133906 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I have used a matte dark grey too, I like a mixture of gloss and matte, so I masked and sprayed it on. IMG_20190508_132915 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20190508_133927 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20190510_131610 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20190510_131740 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20190510_131916 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I put all the bits together to see how it looks IMG_20190510_132058 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20190510_132118 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So all his other bits will be painted in those colours, just some filling to do before I can crack on so thats up next. Thanks for looking, more soon
