Panzer IV Ausf. J - Tamiya 1/48

Recommended Posts

Panzer IV Ausf. J Sd.Kfz.161/2

1 SS Pz. Div. 723 Normandy 1944

This was my second build for the Panzer IV Single Type Group Build. It was a nice kit to make (as all Tamiya 1/48 AFV kits, I have made, seem to be} and I had my first go at using Tamiya's aftermarket Zimmerit stickers, which seemed to fit well despite being badged for their Ausf. H version.

It was finished in a bit of a rush - to make sure it was completed for the end of the GB (tomorrow) so I didn't add any stowage (apart from the bucket - gotta have a bucket....apparently) or figures or make a base.

It was still a very enjoyable build.

Kit: Tamiya 1/48

Paints: Humbrol, Revell, Citadel and Railmatch acrylics all applied by brush

Extras: Tamiya Zimmerit stickers (the set for the H version - which fit fine), Vallejo European Thick Mud, stretch sprue aerial and a bucket

Very nicely done, I had to scroll back to the top to check the scale!

Not done any 1/48 armour for years, the last one I built was by (I think) Aurora. Showing my age now! The detail has certainly come on in leaps & bounds.

Hi Stix,

Obviously I watched this progress during the GB and, as always, was extremely impressed by your work - but doubly so, given that you managed to make two stunning models AND a vignette/diorama in just three months! If I were to give you my stash, it'd be done within the year and I'd have nothing to do for the rest of my life!

I'm liking the look of the Vallejo mud you've been using - it looks to be a good product, which you have applied with artistry. I will have to have a look at it, to try and work out what the ingredients are.

The zimmerit stickers also worked extremely well, despite them being designated 'Ausf H'. But then, Tamiya's 'Brass 88mm shells for the King Tiger' are also correct for the Nashorn. It seems Tamiya don't always advertise alternate (and viable) uses for their products - a marketing mistake surely? Or could they be so 'narrow sighted' as to not even have realised?

Anyway, a grand job, and a Pz IV deserving of the 1/48th 'trophy' in the Pz IV STGB.

Looking forward to seeing your Patton in that STGB,

Rearguards,

Badder

Stunning PIV well build and with a superp paint job !

Adding not too much stowage is not a disadvantage because these tanks looked pretty busy with their side skirts.

I am also not sure if these tanks had much stowage during this campaign.

:wow::thumbsup:

Have a great day

Hi Stix, as always a suprb job, this base "multi-task", looks very effective, background is a nice touch.:goodjob:

Cheers Stix 👍

Hi Francis and thank you very much. Yes my Spitfire display base does have uses beyond it's original purpose. I think the fact that it's a long, low angle photo with minimal features and a nice looking sky, means it works quite well for a variety of different kits. I was very lucky when I found the photo years ago, because there doesn't seem to have been anything similar since. It was on one of those copyright free sites along with a load of other lovely photos.

Kind regards,

Stix

You're churning these out quicker than the Germans did!:) Great work as always Stix with the hairy stick.

John.

Hi John and I don't think I'm that quick!! Two models in three months........could do better! There are people on BM who already have four or more built since the year started! I do not know how they do it! Thank you for your comments.

Kind regards,

Stix

Very nice. I know very little about German armour, what are the spikes on the sides for?

To keep the zombies away!

(Actually, I think that they're the hooks for the side skirt armour, which isn't installed. Stix will no doubt be along shortly to provide more, accurate, information.)

Hi Steve. Thank you very much and @Rob G is correct. There were brackets on the insides of the spaced side armour plates (schurzen) that fitted over the spikes on the side rails. It does look 'interesting' though without the plates in place. While in actual use the armour plates often got dislodged or removed.

Hi Pete. Sorry for the slow reply. I've been busy with other builds and I'd actually forgotten completely I'd finished this one earlier this year! Thank you for your comments. I have to say that Tamiya's 1/48 kits are usually very good kits and reviewers often state that they are better than their 1/35 counterparts! I really enjoy 1/48 armour builds - the 1/48 Skybow Tiger 1 Late I'm building in the Tiger STGB is actually an awesome kit. If you can get hold of one they are usually fairly cheap compared to Tamiya's 1/48 offerings.

Kind regards,

Stix

Hi Badder. Sorry for the slow reply - been busy building elsewhere  Thank you very much, as always for your very kind comments and your thoughts. And I agree - you would have thought by now that Tamiya would be making a thing about what products their extras will work with.

Kind regards,

Stix

Hi Bernd. hope you are well and thank you very much for your comments. Having looked at a few photos beforehand there were some which looked piled up with stowage and some with only a few items. This was actually my second build of a GB - to fill some time - so I wasn't planning on doing too much with it anyway.

Kind regards,

Stix
