As an antidote to my primary build ( Grey matter resin Hs129) i have chosen  tamiyas Milestone 100th release . This is only the second tamiya kit iv ever built and is going to be out of the box so im expecting absolutly no problems .

arrr Alistair as if the Hs-129 wasn't going to be enough another build (diorama???) as well.......good to see.

I've never seen this particular model before, wow very nice!  Being a Tamiya model it'll just fall together, the metal gear strut and wing spare are a very nice touch.

Good luck with this build, she should be a nice relaxing build, look forward to seeing her in the gallery as well.

to quote Victor Mweldrew  "I dont believe it " i have found a desighn error in Tamiyas flagship kit in the first 5 mins of assembly

46485972345_b7e8551e8b.jpgP1020972 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr

The metal pin that will alowe the prop to spin  has nothing behind it to keep it in place so once the front part is attached to the engine block there is no way to get it back in place if it were to be pushed in  and that is easyly done as it moves and slides very freely . . As im not intrested in a spinning prop i simply glued it .

The engine is now complete and whent together without anyneed of filler

The holes to take the engine bearers and the metal pin have been masked with Copydex before a coat of rattlecan black .

Today iv mainly  been chopping up Rommel , and then putting him back together .

Have decided that i will have the pilot and rommel seated in the Storch . As provided in the kit they are in a rather undynamic pose , both facing directly ahead . I wanted Rommel to be looking out of the open door so he has undergon soe surgery . Figured i needed to get a turn in the torso at waist and another at the neck . Lucky Rommel has his hands folded at lap level so i cut direc

This is something like i now want Rommel to be positiond

There are now some large gaps to fill and carve useing Milliput.

Now they have been deswamed and sanded followd by a coat of black primer

The pilot with his hands by his sides could not be changed so easily and no resin replacement could be found so he will have to do .

Nice start to this kit with the figure modification :speak_cool:

Although the Fi-156 is not a subject that interests me the box-art is really striking and it caught my attention when seen for the first time in my LMS.

This is really a fantastic kit. I got it when it first arrived on the shelves. Always wanted to build it, but can't get myself to breakup the lovely

boxed kit. I just stroke it every now and then....

I've a bit of a liking of non fighting military vehicles (land and air),I  must get me one of these, it looks a gorgeous model,  it'll look great in  the North African campaign livery, looking at the size of the finished model, she won't take up much shelf space

It is expensive for it's size, but well worth it.

Wow how time flies just one day short of a month since my last update . i have rather dedicated myself to the Hs 129 to get it to a point where i was happy to put it down without the fear i would never pick it up .

The Storch is a superb kit with the best engineering i have come across .

Lovely engine .It will be such a shame to cocer it up

The window masks are not pre-cut so useing a new scalpel blaid they are easy to cut out and fit like a glove . used the cardleft as a patten for my interior masks made of tamiya tape .

Started some external paint with some RLM 65

Now dare i say it i think Tamiya got it wrong with their paint callout with SF + RL (light blue squiggle over sand )

Looking at these two photos it can be clearly seen that the upper surface colour is darker than sand and the blue strut is a lot lighter than the squiggle

The decal sheet produced byXtradecal X72306 1/72 Fieseler Fi-156C-3 Storch Model Decals has a callout for the standard splinter camouflage with a dense thick sand squiggle .

This is what im going to do ....comments of disagreement welcom 😋

Interesting start. I like your work on the engine. Give a full break down on how you do the squiggle pattern when you get to it. Paint type, thinking, and pressure. I will have to do it on one of my  Me262s.

Will do Greg . This is going to be a difficult tight squiggle to do . I have orderd Mr. Hobby カラー GSI GUNZE Lacquer Model Kit Paint 10ml # C119 RLM79 Sand Yellow and Gunze Mr. Hobby Aqueous Color Model Kit Paint 10ml # H-66 RLM79 Sandy Brown on ebay ,both coming from Tiwan for £2.75 each inc postage >>>How do they make a proffit or is the Gunze factory running on slave labour !

I have painted some plastic card with RLM 70 for doing some practice sessions on

Wow this is brilliant. Love Afrika campaign stuff. The figure inside looks well painted too, great work

Thanks Valkyrie . Its a shame that the Tamiya figures are so poor compared with the storch . very little effort was put into their desighn . I tried to find some resin replacements but without luck .

Looks like a good start and thanks for sharing the photos of the real thing.

Thank you BerdM   Lets hope that all Rommels Storchs follow this paint scheme forever more .

Standard splinter scheme now done

You do wonder how they make any profit, I think I might just order some too as you can never have too many types of RLM 79. Be good to see what it’s like when you get it.

I found a bottle of Akan RLM 79 at the show on Saturday for £1, why did I not just get it all. Beautiful paints to brush, no streaks. Like magic. I’m also considering trying Tamiyas spray can of flat dark yellow and light sand. Have you any experience of theses?

Looking forward to the rest of your paint job, so far brilliant, good sharp splinter camo

Think you’ve made the figures perfect even eau palettes are so good.

I always thought Rommel's Storch was sand colour under the squiggles?

I started this build thinking the same  .The Tamiya box art and instructions show pale blue squiggle over sand , however pictures of the aircraft show a much darker background colour than sand . I think that this aircraft was deliverd in a factory standard splinter camouflage and had the sand squiggle applied in the field .

I sat though my DVD on Rommel this morning to see if I can see the plane only to be disappointed. I will be doing this one at some point so it would be nice to have it confirmed.

I like your thinking on the colour-scheme; it makes sense and logical use of the evidence from those photos.

Looks great Alistair 👍

The light coat over the worms  really blends the camo, and gives it that dry dusty desert appearance.

Nice work, cheers Greg

wow somehow I managed to miss the updates on this this build!!

Wow that engine looks lovely, you're right. it's a shame to cover it all up.

Those squiggles were going to be hard to do no matter what, but they turned out great. She's going to be a really nice looking model when done, well done.
