Did you raise the tail wheel ? I think they were up by quite a bit if memory serves ? I have to look thru my FW 190 book, i think theres a drawing showing the differences ? If you follow the link,

there is a good side photo of a FW-190 with torpedo. Maybe showing exactly what im trying to explain better than words.

Dennis

EDIT: found two side shots one with torpedo from war-thunder, one standard.

The stance is significantly flatter on the torpedo carrier. I do hope I'm helping here and not retreading over info you may know ?

One of the worst jobs in modelling but most satisfying and stress relieving when done. Some primer on here today then good to begin the painting. Feel the cowl ring could do with tidy up work but not sure what it needs? Sanding filing filling replacing. See how it looks with primer on. Tamiya FINE grey spray can.

No all help appreciated thanks for this. The one below is my favourite Fw 190 scheme and did think about doing that under the tank buster but don’t think it was specialised enough.

I have redeployed the extended tail wheel and torpedo from the Revell kit. Should have also taken the undercarriage armour as they are really well detailed and Airfix’ haven’t given them much attention.

190 now in paint shop and rather than prime I went direct onto the RLM 76 light blue again from Tamiya rattle can from their RLM range. It’s really great stuff.

If there are any folks who like me were brush paint only, I tried tamiya spray cans on one project and have been hooked ever. since. It really is fabulous stuff. Great even thin realistic finish. I still love the artistic concentration and technique with pushing paint around with the brush and thus far have only used the rattle cans for larger areas. I have now developed an artistic flair technique with my can which I envisage some of the airbrush guys have too. Anyway, these cans are worth a shot. This is one coat of the Tamiya RLM light blue AS-5 on top of the bare plastic, no primer, save for watered down black capillaried into the Airfix deep panel lines.

Here is where we are. I couldn’t work our how to make a good mask for the lighter camouflage RLM 75 and my Tamiya rattle can looked a little too dark, so switched to brush and Lifecolor RLM 75. I forgot I hadn’t a primer down so the painting is a touch disappointing. Used the same paint on the torpedo which had been primed and two coats of streak free grey in perfection was on. Just wish I’d done the same for the wings. Not sure how il tackle the mottling, sponge, cut brush or my usual do a strong spot then second coat around the shape.

The splay and forward angle of 190 undercarriage is usually hard to replicate but the new tool Airfix makes it impossible to go wrong now.

gee she looks nice!! being a very old hand at the original old fashion way of mottling with a cut brush I'd say that's the way to go. I think you'd get a better finish with that then the sponge method........in my opinion.

Wonder if Airfix will scale it up to 1/48th?

I used the brush on top of wet thinners method for the mottling. Think it was ok. I’m now super annoyed with my brush painted wings of the lighter camo. Should I mask up and spray it. The issue was there was no primer which affected the brush painted section.

That unfortunately is something we cant answer for you. The best thing to do is take a step back and ask yourself this question. “ Can i still look at this in a week, a month, or a year” and be happy with it ? Either way you have your answer.

Id rather it was perfect but I like the effect as if it’s been field touch upped. Il chew it over while I go back to the A-4 Qs then.

Good advice thanks Dennis

I agree. An airbrush for this kind of painting is a must have. At least you have a chance at making it look right with the airbrush.

Not that I will be any good at it when the time comes to do my Me 262 schemes.  I'm dreading it.

Oooooh such a big step, extractor fans, cleaning, clogging, thinning

It terrifies me

If it’s in my garage do I need an extractor?

Now i am NoT in a position to give you an answer regarding health and safey considerations so please look else where for guidelines .

For myself i am happy to use Acrylic paints diluted with water ,useing a facemask suitable for airosole particles in a well ventilated areas .

Cleaning for most types is easy ,taking only 1/2 minutes

clogging .   not often a problem as long as good quality paints are used to the correct dilution .

there is a bit to learn but its worth the effort and  i think it likely that once you make that step you will never turn back

My wife lets me spray indoors as long as i am by an open window  :)

Practice on some plastic card sheets for a few days before starting on an expensive kit and your confidence will be good .

Garage sounds fine it’s big airy and with door open and mask no problems. I only use acrylic too.

Ok, what should I be looking for, something half decent though as like you say once I start with airbrush I’m unlikely to go back.

Thanks again

Depending on your budget, Iwatas come pretty highly regarded.  I started out with a Badger 105 Patriot (.050 tip) and it works pretty well and was fairly inexpensive.  With the .050 tip, it's not the greatest for fine detail work, but is perfect for general coverage and shading.  I actually just purchased an Iwata Eclipse HP-BS (.035 tip/small cup) to work alongside the Badger to be able to handle more detail work like pre-shading panel lines and other fine work...particularly on 1/72 aircraft.  I would think the big thing would be staying w/ a major brand (rather than Chinese eBay) primarily for serviceability down the road.  There is no reason a decent quality brush won't last you a couple decades or better w/ occasional general maintenance.

I do my spraying in the mud room in front of an open window w/ a box fan drawing air outside.  I think I'm actually going to build a small booth that I can setup in the window when I'm using it, and take down when I'm not.  I may do something a little more permanent once I get the hobbyroom set up...but I'm still undecided at the moment.

There is no could that airbrush into is a complex art. You will get frustrated at times. I still do. Several things to remember.

1:. Keep the brush clean.

2: Airbrushes tip will often need cleaning as you are painting.

3: Not all paint colors airbrush the same. Some work very nicely and others will clog your brush very quickly.

4: Thinning your paint is a bit of an art in it's self. A lot depends on the pressure you like to use.

5: Not all expensive airbrushes work well at the beginner level. Some need experience to be able to use them properly.

6: Get a compressor with a tank.

These are just a few things to be aware of that I have discovered the hard way.

Brilliant thanks Greg. I’ve already been having a wee look. I have a suitable bit cleared in the garage now too.

Although I have decided I am happy enough with the brush painting on here my aim is to have an airbrush researched and in place for the Autumn builds if that’s realistic or a rush? Any more advice would be really appreciated. Thanks as always

Decals done, now gluing of small assemblies and the all important torpedo and elongated tail wheel..now where did I put it. Another mistake is I used the Revell wing stencils which were too long but also the decals were old and poor. Got there in the end. Hopefully by end of play this will just be needing touch ups and a varnish.

Going to leave her here for a bit, had to use all way skills to work out a number of solutions before glue dried etc. Tail wheel wasn’t long enough, torpedo wasn’t straight, torpedo hitting the ground

Got there so will let glue set and decals settle down. Not bad at this stage

It's looking good. I wouldn't mind geting the kit myself. Strangely I don't have a FW 190 in my stash. I have just about everything else. Something to work on I think.

My Hobby Boss Me 262 stash is up to six types and the one with the big gun plus a Tamiya kit on the way. Only leaves three to get and I will have the whole collection 😁. This is how much I have enjoyed doing my plane for this GB.

I hope you get your airbrush. I'm going to go against some of the advice here and suggest you get a Iwata knock off to practice with. Then upgrade to a good Iwata airbrush.

Get a Sonic bath cleaner. They are cheap, but well worth it. Just make sure it has enough of a Sonic effect. Some of the cheaper ones are a bit light in the vibration effect.

There are lots of videos on YouTube all but this stuff.

Get a good quality 3m mask. It is important that you protect your breathing. You may not notice the damage done to your lungs until you get older like me. Then you will wise you had taken more care. Believe me.

A full 262 collection would be something! I’d like to do the same for the Fw190. Il need to get another of these as just didn’t do it justice
