Argentina Armada A4 Attack Trio

I used the Eduard canopy masks, one done 2 to go. It does make it easier but still a pain to put them on. This mask doesn’t actually cover the entire canopy instructions ask you to use liquid mask for larger portion...I used my own tamiya tape.

temporarily secure these in place ahead of light grey spray.

No primer worked well for me last time out with the Tamiya light grey so a bit of heavy weathering underneath and panel line highlighting. Rub some off the excess off then il throw the grey on after lunch..just concentrating on one at a time now...

Here we have the latest on the Argentine Armada A-4s. Tamiya light grey and canopy on the top A-4, primer and Tamiya TS-27 matt white on underside of middle ac and panel line and subtle weathering on the bottom ac. Perhaps take it back about the Tamiya rattle can white 27, it dries not too bad..

It’s about time someone invented dust sheets for aircraft painting, gotta be an easier way than this..therapeutic mind.

canopy to mask next and stick on then she’ll be ready for some light grey. A bit more research and they will soon have names or codes to identify each of the three.

Was going to hold it here and watch the Scotland game but seen as they are getting beat 2-0 after 10 mins il maybe mask a canopy and spray some grey. Need to order more white rattle can and the odd beige colour for the nose maintenance hatches

2 A-4s in the paint shop getting light grey while I tackled the decals. An old set of Airfix Falkland decals from Fleabay were used and they were pretty horrid. Backing paper and film were terrible state and decals brittle. I have tried to persevere so we will see how these settle down over night rather than use the rest of them. Plenty sets spare but then I am building three...

Good going valk,I've got to admit I think a lot of aircraft look better canopy shut, wheels up, any exocets to hang on them yet?

Hi thanks for the kind comments.

yeah think 2 will be canopy closed but I was going to have one with everything open on deck from a second attack wave...though my decal disaster might be limiting my options...

From my research I didnt think the Navy carrier based Skyhawks had the Exocet capability.... I’m going to check that as I am kind of sketchy on those details as I really focussed my research on the 8 Navy Skyhawks of attack group 4 and their anti shipping operations in the early stages of the Falklands. For those they carried 4x Mk82 snakeye bombs each. They were set to try for HMS Invincible as it approached the Falklands with 6 per Aircraft, as most of the photos online show, but they were too heavy to get off the carrier which couldn’t gain enough speed for them to lift off..

bit of light reading tonight

It was the Super Ètendards that could carry the Exocet and they had only 5 Exocets in the entire arsenal. The specialists come in to play as it was only the 12 Armada pilots of the 8 initially carrier based A-4Qs air arm who had the specialised training to attack warships in open water, the SEs had Exocets but the specialised A4Qs only used the Mk 82s. I think even the A-4bs and cs used different bombs which were more for land targets.

When you delve into it there is a lot to learn...The Argentine Armada claim an Exocet hit on HMS Invincible as the task force approached the Falklands.

The three books I am reading are really really worth a look...Air War South Atlantic, Wings of the Malvinas and Through Fire and Water, the story of HMS Ardent.

The old boxing of the Airfix Falklands set is where I obtained a few sets of A-4Q decals...they are showing their age, brittle, thick silvery carrier film and most have been destroyed to get to this stage. Luckily there are a few other sets in my decal drawer from other makers so A-4Q # 1 build will be 3-A-304

Going to resort to painting the tail fin on 304 to match as best I can with the decals..think Akan Su-33 blue is closest but on a fresher set of decals it’s probably closer to XF-14

Painting the tail and stabilisers was not all that bad and actually allows for some paint fading rather than the unrealistic solid colour. Both the white and blue are Akan brush painted, almost dry brush from the bottle.

The nose antena has to come off to allow the black nose decal to go on. I should have drilled a hole where it should be positioned, the beauty of building 3 means I can prepare the other 2 learning from 304. The second 2 aircraft will be picked this evening. I have just read that 304 was used as an interceptor fitted with sidewinders off the carrier 25 de Mayo but I was forced into 304 with the decal debacle. I believe 304 was later used as a ship hunter but she would have been in her green and brown camouflage by then...

Not an entirely great deal done today mask removed, all decals on 304 which just needs small assemblies and touch ups but here is where I will need to leave the project for a while until I get more time. Might get to start my other entry...
