Belkits 1/24 Ford Escort Mk.1 London-Mexico Anniversary Rally

It could be a battle with the Belkits chrome again. The spot lamp housings need to be finished matt black, do I spend days scraping off the chrome again [see saga of previous Escort build dechroming] or just try a quick keying sand and paint? Also the rear of the bull bar and roof to wing bars have the rear faces painted black, looks like precision masking is called for. A note to anyone building this version, this on-event photo shows more of the rear face of the bull bar was painted black than on the restored version.

Nice! What paint did you use Mark?

Keith

Halfords Citroen Polar White, only because I had the colour for something else. I imagine the paint purists will be along shortly with a wagging finger.

Nah, paint's paint. If it turns out well, doesn't matter what you use!

I do think it would look a bit odd in pink though Nick...   :)

Why?? Disguising a bit of low level flying over Epynt ranges . . . y’a know . . .

Hope Mark doesn't mind a wander off topic - in the late 70's I had a 4 year old fully prepared Mexico that had a shell as rotten as a pear. I'd already re-shelled one so didn't fancy doing it again so sold it on. I told the guy who bought it all about the condition of the shell and said there's no way he should use it as it was, and he agreed. So, couple of weekends later, myself and a couple of friends turn up to watch an event on Epynt - and there entered was 'my' rotten Mex. And as fate would have it he launched it into one of those low level flights off Dears Leap, lost it on landing and rolled it into a ball! I don't know how, but luckily both he and (more importantly) his co-driver escaped unscathed!

Incidentally, there was a pink Mk2 in our club for a number of years, complete with the Pink Panther and Inspector Clueseau painted on the bonnet.

A productive couple of days, completing 95% of the decal application.

Thanks for the amusing off-topic stories. Not sure I'd want to be near a 'fast lady' who had to use Aseptogyl🤔 it doesn't sound like a brand of toothpaste😜

Off topic , pink rally cars again . Remember Gwyndaf Evan's Mr Tomkinson Carpets Sierra Cosworth from the late 80s . That look good in pink . He even wore pink overalls to match .

I competed against Gwyndaff in a few Motoring News road rallies in the 70's. Well, if you call a difference of probably 50 places in the results competing that is....!! That Sierra was also driven by an Irish boy IIRC, but can't remember his name....

And as to this pink rally cars business I only meant Mark's Escort would look odd in pink....!! :rofl2:

And It's looking really good all stickered up!

It looks like some more scratch building is needed to detail the interior differences on the centre console, dash and navigator's door mounted gizmo. Trouble is once the bodyshell is on it will mostly be hidden🤔 Now I'm pondering opening side windows... where's the saw? Maybe I should have cut a door out in the first place🙄

Keith, I'm a bit stumped with minor details on the anniversary car. You're probably aware It was built by David Sutton, apparently from a standard Escort, for the 1995 event. The dash and nav's equipment is correct as I have reference photos from the event, sadly no shots with the doors open, so I can only assume the door bars were fitted as the rest of the roll cage is correct. Then Ford 'fettled' it once it returned from Mexico and as it's been used on events since then maybe regs have meant the door bars had to be retro fitted if they weren't originally? It's definitely a grey area. Anyway I'm not going to open the doors and once the body is on I doubt the ones I've added will be seen. At least the number of rivets is correct🤣

Ah sorry Mark, I missed that you were building the anniversary car (the title of your thread is a real giveaway!) and had it in my head you were building the original....

Keith

I'll let you blame the heat!😉  I built the original 1970's car a while back, it's on here somewhere. Hopefully they will look good side by side.
