mbdesignart
Yes it's another Mk.1 Escort build, can there ever be enough? This one is the winning car driven by Mikkola/Palm on the 25th Anniversary London-Mexico Rally in 1995 and is to partner my first Belkits Escort of the winning car in the 1970 event driven by the very same pairing. The plan is to display them on the same base as 'bookends' to the story. Graham Robson's Book 'Works Escorts in Detail' gives a brief overview of the tale of how the car was acquired and built by David Sutton Motorsport and its trials on the event - a worthwhile investment. This build will hopefully be a little more straightforward as I'm not detailing the suspension for one and the lessons and tweaks learnt on the first build will stand me in good stead to speed up the build. Fortunately a contact of mine was a scrutineer on the event and took some brilliant photos from which I can work, although the interior detail is a grey area that may have to be fudged unless any other rally car fans can throw some light on this. The car differs from Belkits kit in some detail areas, such as the fuel filler recesses, rear lights, bumpers, wheels and a few other holes and mods here and there. For starters here's a photo of the kit box, not that the scheme makes any difference, along with the detail set and decals... don't expect a speedy build as other things are on the bench too.
Hamden
Can't have two many Escorts, will follow along if you don't mind? Roger
pau10wen
i'll be following with interest. Currently juggling three projects, two of which will hopefully involve two roger clark cars. Can't wait for updates!
John_W
Can't beat the shape of the Mk1. A timeless classic.

mbdesignart
Good to see the regulars following along😁 thanks. I used up a bit of Milliput after filling something else on the bench. C pillar fuel filler and rear lamp recesses filled. This car has modern flush fitting fuel caps and, harking back to the original car, the individual tail lamps. Update, this image shows the different rear lights and bumper. Edited March 17, 2019 by mbdesignart photo added
mbdesignart
The correct pattern resin wheels and tyres have been cleaned up, on the right is the wheel from the Belkits sprue. And as seen on the rear thing.

Brandy
What are those two metal bars between the top of the windscreen and the middle of the front wheel arches? I've not noticed those before. Ian

I've not noticed those before. The car was front heavy and tended to land front wheels first after a jump. The bars connected to the shocker towers and transmitted the jolt through the rest of the bodywork. I'll be strapped into a Corbeau seat by the bar for this one. 3
Snowman
Looking good Pete! I like those "nobbly" tires. Almost bought a Mk 1 in my air force days, unfortunately way too much body putty!😵
Redstaff
Nice subject Pete Got to love the MK1 escort, The Belkits kit is really nice as well, one of the first kits I made coming back to the hobby, but I did the Roger Clark/Tony Mason out of the box Will do another one day, but the stash needs reducing a little first Ian

Pete in Lincs
IN post number 6, the rear RH view of H1 FEV, there is something above the fuel filler on the C pillar. It's an odd shape, and from here it looks like the C pillar air vent from a Mk1 Cortina? https://thumbsnap.com/s/CV3soUFm.jpg
mbdesignart
Hi Pete, well spotted, yes there are vents in the C pillars and you could be right in their origin. I believe the car was originally a bog standard Mk1 which was then converted to AVO spec albeit with some cosmetic changes to mimic F1 HEV. I think I have a better photo pf the C Pillar as there are decals for the vents to go over plasticard 'shapes'. mbdesignart
After a bit more trawling through googleland I came up with a few images of 'H1 FEV' at the Ford Heritage Centre. I'm still undecided as the type of Recaro on the driver's side as fitted on the event. Edited March 30, 2019 by mbdesignart typo
Pete in Lincs
Great pictures. And a clear view of the air vents too. Mk 1 Cortina. Of course now you need to make scale ones!
keefr22
Don't know why I keep forgetting to visit this part of the forum, but glad I remembered tonight as I found this thread - shall be following for the duration now Mark. I need to drop you an e-mail about some wheel sets too, shall do so when home on Monday as I hate using this tablet Keith

Also note the different style of Minilites, the bane of my life🤔 And the roof vent, another part to make. I think I have fund a source for the seats too, albeit they may need a bit of tweaking.
