Jabba
I am entering this GB with the 1/48th Academy CH-46E kit. It will straight OOB apart from the rotors which will be folded. I have tried to find a decals sheet by MAW which includes some CH-46s that operated in Iraq during 2007, but with no luck so far, but hopefully some of the kit options will have done at sometime whilst serving with the US Marines. I will redo the photo of the rotor fold update at some later date. Edited April 30, 2019 by Jabba
modelling minion
Great to have you with us Jabba, and with another with folded rotors too! I'm sure some of the options in the kit decals will have spent time in the sand box, especially judging from the box art. I look forward to seeing your progress.
Nigel Heath
Great, yet another folded rotor, I am looking forward to see how this one comes out.
Jabba
Over the past week or so I have done some work on this in between battling an Airfix Victor and a RV MiG23. Like a few others I filled in the ejection marks on the inner fuselage parts. These have since been painted and the decals applied, which took a little persuasion to stay put. I have also built up the cockpit, but still have to complete this. I am also not sure whether to apply the decals for instrument panels or not. I have also built up the outer fuselage parts by adding the rear pylon and the engines. This is an accordance with the instructions, will see if this is a good way to go or not later on. The rear U/C sponsons have also been built, but I will probably fill and sand these before fitting. I have done a trial fit of these, and was not too happy with it, it maybe better when the fuselage is actually glued together and not held with my hands alone. In the last photo is a better one of the rotor fold update set. More later.
modelling minion
Very nice work Jabba. Interesting how Academy have tackled the sponson section, should make for a solid assembly.

Jabba
Thank you all for your comments. I have got some more done to her, and hopefully I will have the fuselage together soon but I still have a little work to do in the cockpit area. Yes the crew seats do have seat belts on, it is just that they are the same colour as the seats, they may become a bit more clearer when I do a bit of high lighting. The back seat legs are done as to some sort of semblance to Chinook seats and also the seat belts as can be seen in the last photo.
modelling minion
Very nice work Jabba. The red seats in the main cabin certainly add some colour to the mainly grey interior. This all bodes very well for a great result.
wimbledon99
The seats look good, Jabba. I'm thinking I should have installed some more

Jabba
I have had a bit of a problem with my computer over the last week, so I have not been able to update my progress although I did keep a photographic commentary. The first few shoe the cabin floor and roof fitted to one fuselage half. The latter ones then show the fuselage glued together, with the last one show the gap that I have along the Sync shaft tunnel covers. Since these photos have been taken I have glued the sponsons on and super glued the gap so that it is much better. Thanks for the comments and it was good to meet Craig at Cosford last weekend.
modelling minion
Some good work there Jabba. That's a bit of a nasty gap on the top but I'm sure you will sort it out. It was good to meet you at Cosford and I must say your Gulf War display is very good indeed, with a few builds I recognise from Britmodeller such as the Su-20. No doubt we will bump into each other at Milton Keynes.

Jabba
Altogether now and filler applied. Most of the models that I have built in GBs usually coincide with somehow something for the S.I.G.
modelling minion
Really coming together, any more green filler and it could be camouflage! Filler always looks bad before it's sanded back.
Jabba
The majority of the sanding has now been done, just a bit more filler to be done to the underside of the fuselage and one of the sponsons. I have now added the cockpit glazing and masked all the windows, just need to fill the insides of the tape with some Maskol type stuff that I have. I have also added the lumps and bumps of the RWR and all that sort of stuff. I followed the instructions as to which holes to drill for these items, and usually it was one of two holes in the same area. When it came to fitting the parts I found that each part had two which would have fitted the two holes that were in the fuselage halves. Also there was no mention of drilling the holes for the STBD upper jammer fitting (although there were on the first option), so I have now matched this up with the Port side as best as possible. I will add the U/C legs so that the model has something to sit one whilst the paint dries.
modelling minion
Despite the issues with the instructions it certainly looks like it is moving along nicely to me. Good job on starting to mask the canopy and windows, there are some interesting shapes on the canopy framing aren't there.

wimbledon99
Blimey - That masking must have been fiddly. Nicely done!!

Thanks, yes the window seem to be very reminiscent of the Piasecki helicopters which Boeing Vertol bought out. In real life the chin windows (the ones by the feet) were a pain in the backside to replace on Chinooks as the were had to be cut to shape and then drilled before fitting. 16 hours ago, wimbledon99 said: Blimey - That masking must have been fiddly. Nicely done!! To be honest it looks harder than it actually was, taking about 30-40 minutes to do. It does help when you have longer frames to fit the tape to so that I only have to make small cuts where the frame are when concentrating on the individual window. Jabba
Lighter colour Grey painted on. Will start to apply the darker one tonight and start working on the rotor folding.
modelling minion
Very nice indeed, amazing the difference a coat of paint makes, especially one applied as nicely as this one. With the darker colour being applied tonight then this is moving along very nicely indeed.
Jabba
Thanks a lot Craig. The darker Grey has now been painted. I have also started work on the rotors fitting the parts on the end of the blades, although they do seem a bit awkward to me as in reality the bit on the blade should I think be on the be on the rotor head and visa versa. I will hopefully start on the rotor head tonight. Perhaps it was an easier way to mould and fit, but it is just alien to me being an ex helicopter worker. I will apply some Klear also tonight.
modelling minion
Good job on the darker camo sections, they make for a nice and subtle difference. I'm interested to see how the rotor fold turns out, as you are ex-Chinook it will be very interesting to see what you make of it.
