1/48 ICM Mig-25PD, Ukrainian Air Force. Finished 14/04

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Here is my next project; ICM's great looking Mig-25 PD in the markings of the 146th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Ukrainian Air Force in 1995. The particular jet I'm building was part of the leftover fleet in Ukraine from the USSR days and had the latters insignia painted over in Ukrainian marks. It was also adorned with a sharks mouth from late 1991.

Kit (ICM's box assembly was something to behold):

Aftermarket:

I'll be using a Quickboost ejection seat, Master Pitot tube, Eduard cockpit etch, Cold War Studios parachute release actuator, Montex canopy masks and Begemot decals. This is the scheme I'll be doing:

The decals are designed for the Revell kit, so I just hope the sharks mouth fits the ICM moulding. I have Akan paint for the airframe though I'm being told that Mr Paint's version is very good.

There are some really good walkarounds linked from this Cybermodeler page. They are all different versions, but all of them will give excellent details - as long as you go for generic features like u/c bays etc....

I've taped this kit together and the fit, if you take care of mating surfaces, is excellent.

nice project!

with all that aftermarket, did you think about resin nozzles?

there are some from Metallic Detail and some also nice ones from Amigo / Advanced modelling!

Thanks mate. I did look at examples, however I am happy with the levels of detail on the ICM parts so didn't see the need to splash out on them.

Made a brief start on this today. Cockpit was sprayed with Akan's interior blue/green. I added the Eduard etch but as always the colours don't match up. Not much will be seen so I'm not too fussed.

A light wash was also applied to give a bit of depth. Next, I assembled and fitted the front landing gear bay:

I normally prefer to leave the landing gear off until the end, however it looks like this wouldn't be possible with this kit. Intakes and engine ducting were built up and sprayed Humbol Aluminium from a rattle can:

The main landing gear bays and bulkhead for the exhausts were added to the lower fuselage:

The instructions call out that the main landing gear be added before the fuselage is closed up. For anyone that has built this kit, is this necessary or can they bit fitted after painting? Also, ICM call out that the landing gear assemblies are steel, but in the pictures I've seen they look more like a faded grey. Can anyone give me any ideas as to what route to go with that?

This is my first ICM kit and I have to say so far it's very good.

More soon.

Dave

Dave,

I am also currently building this kit and I did not add the the landing gear when instructions said to do so. I will add it in the end. Just don't glue the outer walls to the wheel wells. This is what I hope (!) will work. And I bet it will. The front wheel should be even easier be fixed afterward.

On most fotos I saw the landing gear seemed to be painted in a light grey.

Btw, are the two front wheels ok in your kit? Mine where badly warped and I had to claim replacement wheels which I received two weeks later. My shop told me they opened all kits and everyone had these warped wheels.

Nice start!

I built one already, the landing gear can be added later, some shoehorning is necessary though....

Thanks mate, I think they look light grey too, but the instructions call out that they're steel. The front wheels seem to fine on my kit.

Thanks Werner, nice build! What colours did you use for the landing gear struts and wells? I'll leave off the main gear until the end!

Hello Dave,

nice start here! I have the same kit stashed, so it’s a very interesting to have a look at your build. The kit is very promising, but I’ll wait till the Kitty Hawk releases their «PU».

More done today and it was bit of a mixed bag. Most of the sub assemblies were cleaned up and ready to be attached:

Intakes were added to the front fuselage:

46647744864_7698792297_b.jpg

33494805648_d72b854c8c_b.jpg

Then the fit issues began as I tried to paid the front fuselage to the lower part of the main fuselage. In summary, it just wouldn't fit, leaving several gaps and a step in the join. I had to remove part of the bulkhead and resorted to removing the intake trunking from the front assembly and adding it to the lower part of the main fuselage. You can see the gaps below:

33494804768_197712dd6c_b.jpg

46647743034_d17ed08e0f_b.jpg

I persevered with it, despite nearly throwing the lot back into the box and into 'never to be built' pile and after a lot of trimming and fiddling it sort of fitted together to allow me to add the sides of the fuselage:

40405491033_c41be4145b_b.jpg

A dry fit of the top half of the fuselage has shown that a filling and sanding will be required.  The fit up until now had been great so this was disappointing to say the least. I went online and found a few articles that mention the fit issue around the intake area, but then again I've read several build threads on here that don't mention it. At least the R-40 missiles went together without too much of a fuss:

Hmmm I also had fit issues around the lower joint... less pornounced though!

It was quite some jughling around with the parts dry untill the fit was ok... something todo with the building sequence and how well you fit the ontake assembly parts!

Tight tolerances here!

Hope my  BM  will be more straight forward !

Did you glue it already?

I'd agree that the assembly sequence is probably the culprit! There are really only 2 gaps and they're on the inside of each intake where they join with the 'lip'. The small steps on the fuselage join will be simple enough to sort out.

It's been glued and will be left to cure until I'm back at the bench over the weekend.

Dave, the instructions are not correct in every respect and above all they are uncomplete. Better search for fotos. PM me if you need help, i have collected a few.

And yes my impression is that in detail the parts fit ok but some of the sub-assemblies don't. I also used quite some putty but now it looks as it should I think (after first filler session).

(Hope you do not mind me posting this foto, I don't intent to hijack your thread).

Thanks mate, any help is appreciated!

I managed to get 30 mins at the bench after work this afternoon. Exhausts fitted (petals will be added after final construction) and I'm glad to say no issues here

47326579072_e0718f014b_b.jpg

I then popped on the top part of the fuselage. The fit was ok, just needed a bit of tape to get to sit correctly. The only issue I can see is there is a step behind the cockpit where it joins the main fuselage:

40414091243_bf4964c1ab_b.jpg

47326578322_6269e6cf4e_b.jpg

Tried some super glue and a good clamp to the join, but the step is still there. Filling and sanding required:

32438006917_d2f0079bae_b.jpg

I can sense more trouble ahead as I've dry fitted the tops of the intakes, parts C13 & C14 and the fit is woeful... Anyone else experienced issues here?

More soon.

Dave

It's supposed to have the gaps/outlets between the intakes and the centre fuselage.

Jens

On the lower fuselage Jens? If so, I knew of those ones but if there are any others please point them out!

Got that, thanks Jens. The main fit issue there was the small step in the centre between the fuselage join. Thankfully it looks like it won't be too hard to clean up.

Cheers

I had the same step, Dave, maybe a little less because I used brute force to press the main part of the fuse in place during the curing process.

It was more sanding than filling. Fortunately the material thickness was sufficient.

I didn't have the same fit issues on mine. Are you sure all parts are as tightly fitting as possible?

Jens

As tight as they can be Jens, all parts were dry fitted and tested. Any more pressure would have caused breaks!

Glad to hear someone else has had the same issues! It shouldn’t be too hard to clean up anyway.

the step is not that brutal, the side parts forming part of the intake look quite fine on mine:

you are making quick and great progress by the way!!!

Thanks Werner! The side panels have fitted well, it’s the top parts that don’t look like they’ll fit too well.
