1/48 ICM Mig-25PD, Ukrainian Air Force. Finished 14/04

Recommended Posts

More done today. Nose and parachute housing added. A bit of filling and some sanding around the intake ensemble. Needs a bit more of a clean up but all things considered, it's not looking too bad at all.

You'll see the 3 blobs of filler on the underside - I'm not adding the fuel tank (don't think the interceptor variants carried it) - so the the 3 large holes needed sorted out. Would have preferred this to be a 'drill your own' affair as they are quite close to some raised detail. Just another thing to sort! Also, the parachute housing needed a touch of filler.

Starting to look like a Mig-25 at least!

I am looking at this with interest as I have a couple of different versions in mind. Looks more trouble than I have been led to believe. It is coming along nicely though.

Cheers

It's a decent kit Malcolm, just a few tricky areas with complex fittings, but I'm enjoying it! I've read mixed reviews on it; some folk have had more issues than others, I'm just one of the former!

Regarding tanks,

I think the PD new builds could carry them. The P and PDS not.... or was it the other way round?...

I'm not sure Werner, I wasn't planning on putting it on mine from the outset anyway!

Another couple of hours done. All the filler has been cleaned up and I'm happy with how it has turned out. Wasn't as bad as I was fearing and very little to no detail has been lost as a result of the sanding. The tails and wings went on; the former needed a bit of filler around the join line to the fuselage and the wings were a good tight fit, but needed some liquid cement along the joins just to close them up fully.

Looks like a Mig-25 now! A final wet 'n dry before priming will clean everything up nicely. One thing I decided against was to add the CWS parachute actuator - this requires the moulded ventral stakes to be cut off the fuselage and the resin ones added. I didn't want to go chopping with the risk of further filler etc so I can live without this small detail.

I was taking a look at the decals and from what I can see, the sharks mouth goes over the raised IRST just behind the radome (would have been nice to get some clear parts included for this) but the Begemot sheet does not show any underside shots of the scheme. Would anyone have any images of the shark mouth-ed jet?

More soon.

The PD *can* carry the tank, there are fotos on the net.

Quick clean up then sprayed then inside of the windshield before attaching to the fuselage. Montex mask on the outside added with the cockpit and landing gear bays plugged up. Just need to do a brief clean up of the intakes and mask those up then it's ready for primer:

Coming together very nicely Dave

You're the second person I've seen not use the CWS ventral strake.  As the strakes come in two halves, I just sanded a bit to get the recess for the parachute activator.. much easier than faffing cutting bits off. It's a pretty subtle bit of the airframe anyway...

I think the tank would spoil the lines of the fighter.. better on a recon bird...

Cheers Matt. I  had thought of butchering the CWS part to the kit strake, but decided against it.

Model was given a coat of Tamiya primer earlier in the week. So today, I broke out the Akan paints and made a start.

I also ordered a New Ware mask set. The Montex masks around the windshield were lifting so needed these replaced, plus the New Ware set has numerous other helpful bits:

Everything looked good under primer so I sprayed all the necessary areas with the Akan 'Radio Transparent Grey':

Masked up the parts, minus the nose (will do that tomorrow) and gave some areas a rough pre-shading, which is not something I do a lot of  but thought I'd give it a go with this one:

Metallic areas painted today, something I normally do after the main colour is on, but decided to do it this way for a change. Tamiya Flat Aluminium sprayed on, left to dry, masked, then a mix of Gun Metal and Metallic Grey added:

R-40 missiles painted, weathered and a top coat of gloss on. The stencils are from the Begemot sheet:

Quickboost KM-1 (with the kit's ejection handle):

nice project!

with all that aftermarket, did you think about resin nozzles?

there are some from Metallic Detail and some also nice ones from Amigo / Advanced modelling!

I got the Amigo set, and they are amazing - on these aircraft the exhausts are so massive that they are really worth splashing out for

cheers

More done over the last couple of days. All the main painting has now been done and most of the masking removed. I added some 'patches' of different shades of grey for the areas where the Soviet insignia was painted over. I don't have many reference pictures to go on, so it's all guesswork, but I'm, happy enough with the result. IO Some darker areas were also sprayed around the flaps etc just to add a bit of variation.

A few parts have come off the front landing gear so they need re-attached and the front assembly painted. Once that is done it'll be time for gloss and decals.

More soon.

Getting close to the finish line now.. :)

Thanks Matt. Shouldn't be too long in coming together now.

Decals on today. The majority of time was spent adding the stencils as there were only 9 decals from the Begemot sheet to go on! The sharks mouth fitted ok, required some Microsol and needed some adjusting with a scalpel, so I've had to clean up a few areas with red and white paint.

Everything sealed in with a gloss top coat. Will be left to cure until tomorrow afternoon, then I'll get the panel wash on.

More soon.
