Flapjack- hold the syrup and butter!

Here's one for @Moa! I have the Hasegawa 1/72 kit, and it's very nice- talk about an usual subject for a kit! Kittyhawk has released a 1/48 kit, a review of which I read this morning that prompted this post. Hard to imagine this being deployed on a carrier! Looks like the love child of a Frisbee and an Osprey! Enjoy!

Yes Mike, you guessed right, but I don't build anymore military models, the Hasegawa kit was dumped somewhere in the garage.

A long time ago I built the precursor, the Zimmerman / Vought V-173:

'Only slightly larger than an ordinary backyard'

Hmmm, So little Ricky dumps his bike in the middle of the yard and you can't land?

"Honey, we bought a Condo, we'll have to sell the flapjack"

I love the look of the developed version, but a 1 hour duration is nothing for a Naval Aircraft,

And you'd want to keep a 15 - 20 minutes reserve,  which means you always need droptanks, so less weapons load.

I wouldn't mind the proposed civil version at all, though:

I have the Hasegawa kit too - isn't it actually a re-box of someone else's short run kit? It acts like one.    :)

Cheers,

Bill

PS. Ah, here it is -

Wow- did not know that, Bill! It always reminded me of an early Fine Molds effort. I started mine a long time ago, but put it back in the box- dunno what the reason was.

And the neighbours might have something to say about the noise, not to mention what might happen with an engine failure ...

And, Pete, you'd probably need at least 45 minutes reserve fuel - AFAIK that's an ICAO requirement, wherever you might be (except possibly the planet Mars, which as we all know is another story again!).

I wouldn’t bet my next paycheck on it or anything, but I think the “flapjack” was originally molded by a company called NC Models. They also did the J7W Shinden and J8M Shusui (Me 163 copy) that Hasegawa later released under their own label.

The box art for the Hasegawa J8M kit includes the NC Models logo, but the XF5U kit does not. So I had a look at the Flapjack sprues, and they say "Hobby Spot U" which confirms the Scalemates listing. I have no clue if NC and Hobby Spot are the same company. Scalemates shows the box art for the Hobby Spot release of the XF5U, but they don't have any listings for kits released directly by NC.

More styrene archaeology is perhaps needed...

Cheers,

Bill

I remember seeing the Hasegawa kit at my LHS years ago. It looked really cool but I never got around to getting one. When Planet Models released one in 1/32, I finally picked one up.  It was my first all resin 1/32 kit.

The gear subsequently collapsed so after reassembling it, it now sits on a stand.

Bill, didn't Hobbyspot U also do a very nice 1/72 Bell X-1 that was later picked up by Hobbycraft or Maybe Tamiya? I have a Hobbyspot X-1 and I had never heard of them before or since, and it sure looks like the Tamiya kit.

Tamiya re-boxed the Hobby Spot X-1 (Tamiya kit numbers 60601 and 60740). So it looks like the Tamiya kit because it is the Tamiya kit!    :)
