J.P.
So my ZM F-4C has been pushed to the back burner again in favor of this Tamiya P47. In fairness, I started this one several years ago. I'm going with Glenn Eagleston's mount with the the skull and crossbones on the cowl from an old decal sheet I had from Sky Models decals. I had a Testors P-47 with this scheme back in the late 70s when I just slapped them together and any paint that actually made it on any of my builds was slopped on with a brush. 😁 http:// http:// So I decided to go with Alclad paints and to not have a step where the anti glare is I decided to "prime" the whole thing in olive drab. I figured its safer to mask the OD and spray the Alclad as opposed to the reverse. http:// With the flash you can see the highlighted panels better, they're not as stark as in the picture. http:// Pit parts http:// I used the decal for the seat belt complete with the backing paper http:// http:// http:// I'm not sure what happened to the seat, why it's sitting too far forward. I didn't notice until the fuselage halves were buttoned up, oh well, it is what it is. I also forgot I had some Ultra Cast seats for a P-47....at least I have some for the next build(s).
Nachtwulf
Looking good! Looking forward to more progress! I remember giving my 8 year old brother a Monogram P-47 and letting him use my airbrush for the first time and any colors he wanted. It ended up painted metallic blue and copper! So, if you don't finish this one I'll send you pictures of it and force you to look at them.
J.P.
I got some Alclad Aluminum sprayed on, not 100% happy with it. I have a few touch up spots to tackle. The paint didn't seem to want to spray for some reason. I shot it strait from the bottle, no thinning (because it's supposed to be sprayable OOB, no?), and the bottle is brand new. I basically had to pull the trigger almost all the way back to get paint to spray from my Iwata HP-C. I also toned down the OD fading but now it seems it's too subtle, 😠 oh well. http:// http:// After the previously mentioned touch ups I'll do different shades on certain panels. J.P.
So the first round of panel differential is done, it didn't come out quite like I wanted it to. I sprayed the gun covers with Alclad Duraluminum and a couple adjoining panels White Aluminum. http:// http:// I expected the Duraluminum to be darker than both the Aluminum and the White Alu. colors I used but it turned out the White and Duraluminum look like the same shade. 😕 Also, I'm not sure what the swirly color variation is on the corner of the aileron, it only shows up in the pictures. http:// Holy silvered decal 😨 http:// All in all its lost some of the uniformity, which is ultimately what I was going for but this one is trying my patients a bit but I'm bound and determined to complete it. I may still do another panel or two on the wings and then on to the fuselage. Thanks for looking.
J.P.
I don't know if anyone is actually interested in this build, it's got a lot of veiws but only 2 or 3 comments, but in the interest of self preservation I'll keep posting...it will at least keep me from having to see Nachwulf's brother's metallic blue and copper P-47 from years ago. 😁 Don't know if any of you folks ever heard of this stuff that I used for a mask here, its called Parafilm. I'm not even sure if its still made but if it is and you want to spray NMF finishes I suggest picking some up. Its a waxy film that you stretch and it becomes thin and sticks to smooth surfaces with out marring or leaving residue behind. It's used in laboratory so it impervious to lacquer based paints. I stick it to the side and then using the panel lines (thank god for recessed panel lines) cut out the panel to be sprayed. http:// It all worked out though...I'm happy with the results. http:// Poor planning on my part, I should have masked these access panels when I masked that front panel, but I got a burst of motivation so decided to spray them too. 😉 http:// I slipped a little with the knife but fortunately I think I'll be able to hide those scratches with a decal. *EDIT* its not as noticeable when I upload the pic for some reason. The pictures are a lot less clear...am I doing something wrong? http:// http:// I cleaned up the wings with a light over spray to even things out too. I used Post-Its to mask these panels. http:// Thanks for looking. John Edited March 8, 2019 by J.P. 10
Nachtwulf
Looking good! I like the subtle shade variations very much. I have always sprayed Alclad without a primer base. As long as you have the right balance of air pressure and paint volume it works great! What pressure were you shooting at? I usually use @ 12psi and I barely have to open up the needle. amblypygid
I liked the idea of Parafilm, bought some, but by the time I got around to using it, it had lost its stretch and tack properties. Please keep going with the Jug, and apologies for not commenting more!
Retired Bob
Hi J P Like you I have a ZM F4C on the backburner as I try and finish off some of the kits that I had started and put aside while I still had to go to work. My P-47 will be the checker nosed Rat-A-Dat, also in NM, so I am watching with interest. FYI, duraluminium is aluminium with a corrosion resistant coating, so it's the same colour, or even color. Thanks Nachwulf, I'm spraying around 15 psi and I'm probably heavy handed with the coats, I was getting some crazing without primer. 19 hours ago, Roger Newsome said: I'm interested and it's looking good so far, some useful tips too. 👍 Roger. I have had in a container that it came with so that might be why its still good. 19 hours ago, Retired Bob said: Hi J P Like you I have a ZM F4C on the backburner as I try and finish off some of the kits that I had started and put aside while I still had to go to work. Bob Huh, I thought they'd be different based on a build going on over at Large Scale Planes on P-47 "Dottie Mae". He used aluminum,...or aluminium 😁...Dura., and white alu. and it gave 3 differing shades. For this last batch of shades I actually went with Model Master Metalizer Magnesium which is a tad dark but I like it. Looking forward to "Rat-A-Dat". I also have markings for Eileen, I know it's not BNM and a U.S. P-47 in British Dark Green and Sky is very appealing but that ZM F-4 may NEVER get done LOL. J.P.
Ok, I squeaked a little more work in this morning. Unfortunately I went with Model Master Metalizer Aluminium which as it turns out is WAY more bright than Alclad's. 😱 I may consider trying to tone it down but other than a tinted clear coat I'm not sure how I'd achieve that. I'm not a fan of over coats on Alclad and Metalizer finishes, it tends to make them lose the effect. I'll assume its obvious which panels I did 😀 http:// http:// http:// Aside from the panel that runs lengthwise under the fuselage in line with the exhaust/waste gate line, which I just read was Stainless Steel, I'm done with the "patchwork". Last one which I just thought was an artistic shot. http://

No, nothing wrong with the ZM F-4, its simply a case of modeler's ADD. I was following along on a build over on Large Scale Planes of a P-47 in Dottie Mae markings and the builder was hesitant to use Alclad paints so I tried to encourage him to go for it. Well that gave me the bug to do a BNF aircraft myself...and since I had this one started I figured what the hey. Here's the link to the Dottie Mae build if its alright for me to link to another site and anyone is interested, https://forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?/topic/78300-finished-eduard-132-p47d-thunderbolt-“dottie-mae”/ . Thank you glad you're enjoying the build.
J.P.
Hi 'yall, it's been a while but I managed to get a little work done. It was really bugging me so I masked that panel on the side of the fuselage off again and misted some Alclad Aluminium over the MM Aluminum. That really toned down the brightness of it, I'm really happy with how it looks. http:// http:// I also started adding decals....MAN!!! there are alot of stencils on a P-47.... 😲 http:// http:// http:// ....and a lot of them are readable under magnification. For instance, this one on the wing says "Hoist Use Eyebolt AN 46-10 With Sling B9X04902". http:// More stencils on the bottom. Note the panel that runs lengthwise under the fuselage in line with the exhaust/waste gate has been sprayed Model Master Stainless, not sure how much the color looks like Stainless Steel but it adds variation. I'll add exhaust burning/staining later. http:// Those D-Day stripes need a little more coaxing with some Micro Sol but I need a break and I have some adulting to do. http:// Thanks for looking. Redstaff
Very nice @J.P. Love the panel variations, I'm getting close to the paint stage for a NMF EE Lightning and wondered about masking, I was going to use post it notes for the larger areas, but may try and get hold of some parafilm for the smaller panels, I had toyed with the idea of liquid mask around them and post it notes to avoid overspray, but this looks a lot easier Ian

Yes, the Parafilm is great but be sure to use light pressure with the knife or it will scratch the surface. I can't tell you how many time the blade has slipped on me and left a nice gouge in the finish. I find it cuts really easy if you stretch the Parafilm a few times to get it really thin, two layers of very thin Parafilm cut better than one thicker layer....if that makes sense. Its those darn corners that are the tricky areas. That said, for areas that are box shaped Post-Its work great. J.P.
Hi 'yall. I've been plugging away at this guy slowly. Most of the decals are on, I just have to add the tail codes and the squadron marking(?) on the starboard side. The "FT L" on the port side keep sticking to my finger and peeling off so I'm leaving the right side for last. I've added some exhaust staining, airbrushed Testors colors and dirt/oil streaks in the form of artists oil paints. Anyway, as the old Night Ranger song goes 🎼Chippin' Away at my (motivation) heart every day....🎶 http:// http:// http:// http:// http://
J.P.
...I'm really going to have to run a wash on that cowl...which means I'm going to have to clear it and flat coat it....more chances for disaster. 😨
