Hi all

Did 92 squadron fly the two prop Spitfire MkI around the time of Dunkirk?

I've just seen documentary on TV about Dunkirk and in particular pilot Tony Bartley

Also have Into The Swarm - stories of RAF Fighter pilots in the second World War, but photos of 92 squadron Spits appear to be rare

Cheers

as in the watts  two blade fixed pitch?  I really doubt it.

Around Dunkirk they were still coded GR

This was taken when 3 planes escorted Churchill to Paris IIRC

92 Sq photos are not particularly rare,  well, in as much as there are not many BoB photos about in general

this is a good one from the Battle

No, 92 Squadron didn't convert to Spitfires until March 1940.  These were new production aircraft, so would have initially had 2-position DH props, getting converted to constant-speed in late June / early July.

IIRC there's another pic of those 3 airframes in the Osprey Spitfire MkI Aces book which appears to show GR-U wearing a Type A1 roundel under the port wing.

The second airframe in that photo appears to be GR-S.  There's a nice close-up of that airframe in Geoffrey Wellum's book "First Light" with some battle damage inflicted over Dunkirk.

There are a LOT of photos of 92 Sqn's Spits in Michael Robinson's "Best of the Few" which is the history of the squadron in 1939 and 1940. The photos of Spits in the book span from the day that the first ones were received (Wednesday 6th March) and were completely without codes right up until the end of the year.

If you're interested in Tony Bartley, then also considering getting hold of his memoir, "Smoke Trails in the Sky" which is excellent and even includes an inflight photo of him flying a Spit from around the Dunkirk period.

Happy to give serials and codes for Bartley if that is what you are after.

Cheers,

Tim
