DaveJL
Hello all, Here is my recently finished Tamiya 1/48 F-14A, this time in the markings of VF-41 'Black Aces' during their final F-14 cruise as part of Operation 'Enduring Freedom' in October 2001. BuNo 158612 is quite an interesting airframe - it was the first production F-14 delivered to the Navy in 1972, serving at Patuxent River for a number of years before being passed to VF-201 then to VF-14 and finally VF-41. It saw service during Operation 'Allied Force' , Operation 'Southern Watch' and 'Enduring Freedom.' The jet dropped 17 LGBs over Afghanistan before being scrapped in September 2003. It was also one of the few jets that, instead of the standard TPS colours, was painted overall 'Medium Grey'. Extras used included Quickboost seats, Quickboost TCS pod, Master Pitot tube, Fightertown decals, Hasegawa GBU-24, Furball stencils, Eduard canopy mirrors and resin ECM bumps. The necessary parts to make a later A model - GPS dome, NACA gun vent, tails with reinforcement plates, late style wheels, beaver tail and so on are extra sprues from Tamiya's F-14D kit. The build thread is here With my other two Tamiya A models: And two D models: Thanks for looking, Dave

Baldy
A very interesting machine and a very nice model. Why were some jets painted medium grey? was it a trial of some kind? Cheers Malcolm

I've no idea why some were painted medium grey; others were overall Gull Grey too, again different to the TPS scheme. Dave

whiskey
Dave, just going back through older unread posts and saw the completed work you did on this for the GB last year. Excellent job. Did you read "Black Aces High?" Fantastic read about that cruise.
