nimrod54
I would like to add this AZ model kit as my second entry for the GB. I am not too sure about which scheme yet. I am wondering whether to choose one of the kit options, there is a nice Remembrance Day scheme of MJ627 emblazoned with small poppies, or maybe look around for an IAC example - MJ627 started life as an LFIX and was converted to a T.9 by Vickers to become IAC158. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr
Col.
For the Spitfire being such a popular subject you've picked what must be the rarest of them John.
Basilisk
Great choice John. I like the Irish colour scheme and markings on the Trainer. I started one a while ago and it certainly not a "shake the box" build. Cheers, Peter
Hockeyboy76
Great choice. I did say your stash was amazbobs and you have found another belter. Seeing as it’s in the huge scale of 1/72 I think you should tackle the remembrance scheme with all those tiny Poppy’s.

I have started assembling the cockpit floors and bulkheads, I've also made a start on painting the interior details, and as for the scheme, I have decided to pick up the gauntlet that @Hockeyboy76 threw down and tackle the Biggin Hill Remembrance Scheme with its 75 poppies down each side of the fuselage. I'll take some photos of the progress so far and post them up tout suite. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr Edited March 3, 2019 by nimrod54 Photos added

nimrod54
With Phase 1 of the home improvements finished, and domestic harmony restored, it is time to get on with some further work on the Spit. I added some belts to the seats yesterday and fixed the completed assemblies in position. I had a bit of an issue trying to determine the position of the rear instrument panel, which was fouling against the control column when positioned according to the kit instructions, in the end I had to make a best guess. I then glued the fuselage halves together and left things overnight to set up. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr Having previously assembled and adjusted the wings in an earlier session, it was time to check them against the glued fuselage. No further work was needed so I glued them to the fuselage assembly checking the joints for best fit to minimise any filling, and the rudder was also glued in place. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr My next job will be to check and fill any details that are not applicable to the T.Mk.9 and after a general tidy up of all the joints it should be ready for some paint.

nimrod54
I have been checking details for MJ627 and started blanking the holes for the cannons by gluing those parts in first, then trimming and sanding them until they were flush with the leading edge. I then made the two teardrop blisters for over the wheel bays clearly seen in this photo of the aircraft. I need to check for any redundant areas on the undersides, once I have found a good photo. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr
nimrod54
Further work has seen the radiator cores and their interiors painted before the oil cooler was added along with the radiator covers, I also filled the redundant spent ammunition ports under the wings by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr A couple of minor improvements to the tail has seen the plastic detail for the rudder linkage trimmed away and replaced with a piece of 0.2mm brass rod. Less noticeable is the strengthened butt joint of the tailplanes, I did this by drilling out the inside face of the elevators at the leading edge and then inserting a short length of brass tube, all held in place with superglue. by John L, on Flickr My next job, and the last one on this project for today, was to add the canopies. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr
nimrod54
The T. Mk.9 Spit has had canopies masked up using the Peewit mask set and a splash of masking fluid across the joins. A word of caution with regards to the masks, I feel that those for the rear canopy (Parts 18, 19 and 20) should be fixed on the opposite side to that shown. Having followed the instructions for parts 18 and 19, I had to carefully remove them and reapply on the opposite side to get them to fit correctly. After brush painting the frames with the interior colour earlier today, I covered the whole lot with some Tamiya Grey Primer, shouldn't be too long before some colour goes on now. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr

nimrod54
Over the weekend, I brushed on the Sky band and underside colours, then removed the masking for the stripes. There are a couple of areas that need retouching before I mask things up again for painting the top colours. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr
nimrod54
Well it's almost 'Poppy Time' folks, I finished the camouflage painting yesterday and applied a couple of gloss coats last night. I have now unmasked the stripes and sky band and then realised that I had masked outside the rear edge of the sky colour so there will be a bit of touch up work required there. Once I have sorted that out I can start applying the decals, my planned sequence is markings first, followed by the stencils, and then the poppies. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr

nimrod54
Having looked at some reference photos of MJ627, I decided that the red of the kit markings looked to be too bright, and replaced them with some dull red versions from the spares box. The stencils that come with the kit are printed in black and there are a few that are either red or white, so unless I can find alternatives I will leave those off for this build. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr
nimrod54
After a few sessions over the past week, I have added all of the poppies to the port side. One thing not immediately obvious until the decals were going on, was that they are printed slightly out of register and this leaves a thin white edge at the end of the larger petal, which will require some careful touching in. by John L, on Flickr Now it's time to push on with the starboard side and then try touch in 150 individual poppies. 2 1

Hockeyboy76
Looking good dude. It’s a shame the Poppy’s are out of register but I’m sure you can make them shine.
stevehnz
I admire your perseverance John, with the time still to run in this GB, once I'd realised what was up, I'd have been giving AZmodels a rev up for a new & better decal sheet. In every other respect, your build is looking superb. Steve.
zebra
Crikey John you’ve got some serious touching up to do on those poppies. Good luck!

I have changed my plan a little, so before I start the starboard poppies, I will have a go at touching in a few of those on the port side and see how successful I am. That will probably be after the Easter break when I can hopefully get a quieter moment. On 17/04/2019 at 21:57, zebra said: Crikey John you’ve got some serious touching up to do on those poppies.
