So I guess the Alaska region doasn't fit here?

There's a clear and definitive map in Tony's post #1. According to it, northernmost part of Alaska fits like a glove 🙂

I am intersted in this as well. Maybee a Ju-188 recon bomber.

O, don't forget the big battleships and aircraft carriers that did the arctic route in WW 2. For instance at the German side the Tirpitz and the Scharnhorst.  British HMS Duke of York, HMS Sheffield. But there are Some more. Also some canaidian and US navy ships.

Cheers,

Alright, alright, alright!

I've got the skis and decals from Minicraft's 1/144 C-47 for an aircraft that crash landed near Isachsen Station in October 1949. Apparently still there...

Will that work?

Just 7 more to go then.

Surely there must be 7 more people out there who fancy doing something a bit chilly for a change!

Don't call me Shirley
We can hope to find a few more in time for the 2021 vote :)

Hello folks,

I’m sorry.

Back almost a year later.

Poor Health; a move of countries.
Now back much closer to the Arctic, in Scotland, than before when I was closer to Antarctica when I first posted this.

I will go back through the pages of the thread.

Volunteer co-host would be greatly appreciated * just in case*.

Thanks for all your interest. Just looking back through the pages quickly shows some great stuff.
Thank you  for keeping the plate spinning whilst I was as much use as a chocolate teapot. Very much appreciated 🤝

Best Regards

TonyT

What's not to like in this combination of WW2 + Arctic region + Hampdens + PR Spitfires +  Catalinas + RAAF and RAF?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Orator

Thank you for this information and link.

i have seen a private photograph (Since stolen, possibly burnt as an act of spite) of the aircraft carrier mentioned  at an angle, in dreadful stormy seas, that I would never have imagined such a large, metal ship could recover from.

The holes in my aviation knowledge show here too; before reading this article I didn’t know that there was a dive bomber variant of the JU-88. I do remember my grandad really emphatically demonstrating the best way to shoot down dive bombers, from the front room of his home, on the night of my 18th birthday.

It was knowledge that I never thought I would need but did not say so. It was fascinating to see him

so animated.

I will research those Ju-88 Arctic dive bombers.

Thank you again

Great idea for a group build Tony. There's no shortage of subjects here. I built Orange Roughy, the New Zealand Antarctic research bird for last year's Huey GB. She sure stands out.

.

Here's a picture of her being loaded into an RNZAF C130 for shipping to Antarctica. These planes flew without skis, landing on hard packed snow.

.

I'm not sure what to build but Airfix Walrus springs to mind as Australia used one ( which is replicated in the RAAF museum) as does Pegasus, a famous Lockheed constellation, partly buried since the 50's.

Count me in anyway.

Colin

Also maybe the Australian Kingfishers? Airfix and I think Lindbergh did one (I think I may have that in the stash somewhere) and I think a maybe Czech company is about to, or has released a new tool.

Some describe it as orange, yet all profiles I see show it as yellow 🤔

Got to love international orange, especially on a helicopter or beaver 😊

Thank you Robert that is really kind 😊 🥳!

Thank you for the well wishes too.
what a cracking number of ideas have emerged since I have been away.

I will DM and we will get things rolling along 🥶 ️

Thanks again, superb!

Mmm.  According to Wikipedia, Murmansk lies (more than) 2 degrees north of the Arctic Circle.

It's up to TonyT, but that might give scope for WWII models - the arctic convoys, and their cargo ... Russian Hurricanes?

Hi @TonyTiger66

If you plan to continue with this GB for 2021, then please add me to the list.

If it would count, I’m having in mind a Scandinavian Airlines DC-6B, as this was the first plane to fly polar routes for commercial flights in the early 50’s. Or maybe a helicopter of a kind from Air Greenland?

Cheers

Having spent a dozen or so winters in the Arctic should give me some inspiration for something to build.

You might recognise this area as it was one of the locations used in the film Star Wars.
