Colin W
Good to see progress is continuing. When I'm off sick I usually get more modelling done than when I'm at work. Colin
John Masters
This'll be a fun build. I didn't know Pine Camp became Fort Drum. It has a long history beginning in 1809. fascinating. And I do love tanks!
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello Everyone... Well im still recuperating but trying to do a little bit of work on this. I finally got the VVSS suspension done on the Lee. Im not happy with it personally. Mainly for two reasons one the direction i chose to do my build order. The other because of Takom’s fiddiliness ( is that even a word ). Apparently it is i looked it up. Here is the build instructions for the suspension. Please don't misunderstand my complaints of the fiddliness of the kit. I just think things could be a bit simplified thats all. I will be purchasing a few more Takom kits someday. A couple of Pattons and a chieftain to start. So for todays update we have this to show. A close-up of the guns mounted and painted. Im out of Black paint so need to get to the LHS for a restock. Maybe i can get there tomorrow. Questions, comments, or jokes if you prefer ? Dennis Edited March 7, 2019 by Corsairfoxfouruncle
Col.
This one is looking great Dennis. Well done getting the fiddily suspension together and in place as there certainly are a lot of parts in that small area.
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello everyone... Well I almost binned the Lee last night. ☹️ I attempted a start on the Tracks. I have one word to say about them = 💩. I have never dealt with tracks this bad. They're not my first set of link & length either. The tracks were so bad. I actually considered robbing the Rubberband Tamiya tracks from my other M3 Lee. Nothing fits and there is one section in which you need to build a long section and add 5 single pieces. This is to get a slight upsweep to meet part of the suspension. 😡 Problem is the pieces wont stay on the track guide that Takom give you to do this. I wound up having to scrape and sand about 50 single pieces. This includes both paint & plastic to come close to a fit. I got it to a standard of “that’ll do”. Im going to just do a generic Lee at this point. Someday i will build another as my grandpa’s Lee. I will cover the ugly lower suspension and tracks with weathering and mud. Here you can see the ugliness. Questions, comments, and or jokes ? Dennis Edited March 10, 2019 by Corsairfoxfouruncle
CliffB
I can see why you're frustrated Dennis. Fortunately, the tracks do look much better from the sides than they do from underneath .
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Well i was able to take a couple of days away from this and collect my thoughts. I then attacked the Lee with some paint to touch it up. Once that was done and i was happy with what it looked like, i glossed the Lee in preparation for decaling. After i glossed it and while i was cutting up the decals in preparation for tomorrow or Friday. I opted to go with this scheme for “Gaudy Duchess”. Only to find out they want you to paint the yellow stripe. No indications on the scheme diagram or in the instructions ? No chip for yellow paint either ? Another reason im a little disappointed with the kit. They're are no painting instructions at all, nothing during the assembly sequence either ? So after the gloss dried i masked it and brushed the yellow onto the turret. For better or worse here is where it sits. I hope she looks ok out there ? As usual questions, comments, or jokes if you choose ? Dennis PS - The last two Lee photos from my grandpa’s yearbook, riveted hull this time. Col.
Looks fine to me Dennis. I'm sure the real stripe wasn't perfect and your looks more authentic than any decal could.
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello all... Sorry for the small delay, bit of life getting in the way and all. I was able to get all 8 decals on today. Yes you read correctly “8” is all there is. I never understood the reasoning behind the Blue serials in this era of U.S.Army equipment. I guess it made it harder for the enemy to see at any distance ? The yellow of the stripe and star are off. I will need to blend them with some type of wash. Im also going to have to paint a green border around the stars. They don't actually touch each other. I also need to make a start on my Heinkel, over in the Specialist group build. Soon i need to start getting ready for the Patton Pershing STGB. Questions, comments, or jokes if you will. Dennis
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Sorry folks... this is slowly moving to the back of the line. I painted the borders to the stars today. They look handpainted and rough, because the real thing was most likely painted that way. Just a clear coat over the markings and then onto weathering. I will be honest the progress will be slow on this as i will be busy running the Patton/Pershing build very soon. I do promise to finish before the end of this build though. Col.
As you say the hand-painted look is most likely right for this one. Tidy work.
Corsairfoxfouruncle
hello all, just letting you know this build will be temporarily suspended. Tuesday when the forum server crashed it effected my access to Britmodeller. it took to Wednesday to get a hold of Mike. In the process of eliminating the options, we have determined that my internet provider is blocking access to Britmodeller. I will try to give a brief explanation as maybe somebody can toss an idea to help out. First i thought it was my IP address.but i an access the forum from anywhere but my own WiFi. the WiFi is fine as I've rebooted everything and can access the internet no problem, other than britmodeller of course. so we think my internet provider has blacklisted the forum. why who knows ?S if anyone reads this and has an idea please let me know ? EDIT: The issue has been solved, so i am back to work. Though if anyone can tell me what happened id be very happy. Gorby
I haven't a clue about tanky things, but it looks great to me Dennis. I have no idea why your internet provider would be blocking BM (unless we're seen as a corrupting influence) sometimes firewalls and anti-virus programs can take a dislike to particular sites and block access. I hope you manage to get it sorted.
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello @Gorby yes for some reason i woke up to an email from a fellow member that had also been blocked since Tuesday. The email was saying that somehow the issue got resolved and he was back on the forum. So I checked and im back on as well. Dont know why or what happened but its fixed for now. I think i owe the mods a beer or two. Dennis
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Well that only lasted 7 hours. So I've been disconnecting from the WiFi to access the forum. I just wanted to say i should be able to get back to this in a week or so. Im waiting for my M48 Patton to get to this stage, that way i can weather them together. Corsairfoxfouruncle
Wow two weeks since my last update, sorry about that. I finally got to a point where i could do some more work on this. I gave it a little bit of weathering in the form of dust and gas spills. I then hit it up with a satin coat. I will do more when i add the mud to the lower hull, and some other strategic spots. Questions, comments, or stories ? Dennis
AdrianMF
Sorry to hear that this has been a troublesome build. Your build and paint job look very nice to me, and the closeups show nice rough cast texture and detail from the kit. It does sound like a terribly complex kit, although I’m currently struggling with a short run kit at the other end of the spectrum with fewer parts than one of your tracks! I’ve never even heard of a cast hull Lee before now, because my sole exposure to the type was building the Airfix kit many years ago. I’m intrigued by that angled big hatch behind the main gun turret - it looks like it’s just been thrown into the design. Regards, Adrian

It does look odd in its place and the size isn't helping. I think it was moved there on purpose though. It would probably compromise the castings strength had they kept it where it was on the riveted hull types. The original location was between the upper turret and the right side door on the roof. Some later cast hulls even had the side doors never cut in ? Im guessing also for strength ? Dennis
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello everybody... The grand experiment has begun, i have applied the MUD ! Its looking good so far but its wet. Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello everyone... Well its been a slog this week. I came down with something, add to that I've had a few bad days with my blood sugars crashing. But i was able to finish the little details. I painted and added all the tools and bits to the tank. Ive gone and added this to the Gallery. I will also add an RFI up in the armor section. I only realized this recently. I started this build only two days after what would have been his 100th birthday. Questions, comments, jokes, or stories ? CliffB
Another great result Dennis. I think you've got the mud just right for a day on the ranges
