Su-27FSM - "Flankerstein" (T-10X Series) in 1/72 scale - Revell/Zvezda/Italeri Combination

Recommended Posts

While I was sorting out the kit rest and spare parts left from massive kit butchery for various Flanker conversions reported in my other topics here, I have realized that I can build my own Flanker version by combining these parts. It will be a kind of creating a Frankenstein, therefore I have called this project as "Flankerstein".

I hope you will like it.

And at some point we can all shout, 'It's ALIVE!'

I am sure that this "freak" will be completed much earlier than my all running modification projects as there is no constraint to make it looking realistic as possible.

Lets start the surgery...

Here are the parts of Italeri Su-34 kit (remaining from Su-27IB conversion) and "cloned" forward nose upper and lower parts from Su-27M (T-10M Series) project.

442.jpg

I have started first putting lower surface "cloned" and remaining halves together...

443.jpg

Cutting intake diverters from marked lines...

451.jpg

and using superglue the lower part is now single piece:

444.jpg

Note that only small amount of putty was needed to make joint area nicer. The next step is to join upper front and rear halves. Here a piece of "Evergreen" polystyrene sheet has been glued from back side to support spine:

452.jpg

To close the gap behind the airbrake I have decided to extend the rear spine upto airbrake.

454.jpg

To do it I have used modeling clay to duplicate the spine shape roughly:

455.jpg

... and filled this area with PU resin from inside between glued plastic card and  remaining original spine:

456.jpg

The result is not so bad 🙂

458.jpg

Now the both halves are "almost" completed:

457.jpg

To be continued 🙂

See, this sort of modelling is surely much more fun than just using what comes in one box.

You actually have to think about how to do this stuff.

Please carry on, Serkan. I am enjoying watching.

Thanks for your encouraging words Pete.

I fully agree. Most of the time I build my planes with plenty of modification but not directly OOB. You can see that my all ongoing projects reported in this forum have huge amount of mods.

For "Flankerstein"?

It's so smallish!!!

You maked scary monster or what?

😁😁

In line Tsar-tank, Tsar-Cannon, Tsar-Bell is definitely not enough Tsar-Flankerstein!!!

But everything with the prefix Tsar should be great, such a tradition!

😁😁

Just kidding....

Other idea!

Maybe  just installed Big JATO inside for faster and shorts take-off from mobility ground platform? As on MiG-19:

I am planning to make following mods:

  • Adding ventral fins from Revell/Zvezda Su-27SM
  • Using Su-35BM (T-10M series except "701") VTP from my ongoing project.
  • 3D Thrust Vectored Nozzles from ongoing Su-30MKM project.
  • Su-34 MLG Bay details from Trumpeter kit.
  • Wing tip pods from Trumpeter Su-30MKK

Any suggestions/feedback are welcome.

By the way here is the top view of paint scheme for this beauty/beast I am planning to apply (Yes, I know it was too much effort for a kit that will be built only once 🙂 )

Side views will follow. What about the board number as "Red 666"  ?

su-27fsm-blue-731-flankerstein-what-if-b

I hope you will like this scheme...

No thing.

Because in military units usually use two-digit numbers. Three-digit numbers are usually test & demo aircraft.

I am in difficulty to decide which one I should take. 🤔

All schemes are good. In this case, I would recommend to mentally imagine how this plane will look collected on the shelf among other models of your collection.

Depending on whether you want to emphasize this model to the detriment of others or vice version, so that it does not stand out from the collection, it makes sense to choose a scheme.

F-15 Aggressors Splintered Camo scheme...

This is also one of favorite camo which I applied one of my F-15 tetestst project.

Then, this scheme is not suitable for Flankerstein, because it is already in your collection.

Thanks for all your valuable feedback. Then the winner scheme is as below (including my wife's and little daughters' votes 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 ) :

su-27fsm-blue-731-flankerstein-what-if-b

su-27fsm-blue-731-flankerstein-what-if-b

su-27fsm-blue-731-flankerstein-what-if-b

Thanks for your feedback Serge. As this will be the demo/test aircraft, I have set the board number to "731". I hope this is not clashing with any existing one...

The camo pattern is now fixed but the colors not yet. I liked gray shades as well.

What do you think about markings and insignia? Is it eye catching or a bit exaggerated? 🤔

Cheers

Markings and insignia have standard size. Highly recommend use Begemot decal:

- Additional insignia of the Russian Air Force (sample 2010)

- Insignia of the Russian Air Force (sample 2010)

Thanks for links Serge.

As long as you agree that the insignia and all other markings seem correct and the others make sense then I would prefer to print my own decals. I have many Begemot  Flanker decal sheets in 72 and 48 sizes and they have wide variety of markings for many aircrafts but the print quality is not so impressive that.
