Mosquito code letters - help appreciated

Recommended Posts

I have been looking for the code letters of 68 squadron Mosquito Mk XIX MM679 from July 1944 but have drawn a blank so far. I have a bit of a personal interest in this particular plane. I've seen others raising similar questions about Mossies so maybe I'm out of luck. But if anyone can help I'd be thrilled.

thanks

Mark

Well, the ORB isn't any help- no references to individual letter, which is all too common.

Squadron Codes are WM

Thanks. Unfortunately it looks like MM679 wasn't flown by any of the Czech crew in the squadron so doesn't appear in the first link and I'm not sure about that accident report in the second link saying it was destroyed in a V1 explosion as the ORB states they were given another vector after reporting that a V1 had exploded. There was no communication after that.

I know but at least it does give the serial number and that its a Mk XIX. Its interesting to see how filling in those ORBs varied so much between squadrons and by month as well (which probably means by author). The July, August and September ORBs for 1944 all show serials but those for October, November and December dont

Here's a photo I found on a 68 Sqdn website - it is a MM6** serial, of course the last digits are obscured.  The web site is    https://raf68squadron.wordpress.com/

I've found that their callsign was 'Ferro 19' - there is a nice write up on this sight  http://aircrewremembered.com/kemp-frederick-john.html

Thanks for the help everyone.  It looks like this is going to stay on my to do list for a while.  I'll come to the build later in the year and I'll probably leave the individual code letter as a blank space and just show the squadron code of 'WM'.

thanks again
