Almost as fast down low and on the deck as a Goodyear F2G- and on a LOT less horsepower! Of course she used less Horsepower. She didn't have a Honking big butt radial pushing wind. She was more aero-dynamically clean. 😉 Love the Mk.XII but gimme a corsair anyday. Work In Progress Posted February 16, 2019 Share Posted February 16, 2019 The fact the F2G is very nearly twice the weight of the Spitfire XII has a rather greater bearing on its need for horsepower than the radial versus V-12 engine question! Both the Bearcat and the Fury / Sea Fury were directly influenced by design features of the Fw190. Before the 190 rubbed it in everyone's face, there was a quaint theory that radial engined fighters must somehow be slower than equivalent in-line or V engined types, perhaps on the basis that pointy looks fast. (Corsairfoxfouruncle knows this very well and was merrily poking fun at the theory in his Corsair post above.) If we hadn't had the likes of the Spitfire V embarrassed by the performance of the small, light, beautifully-cowled Fw190, we probably would not have the Fury and Bearcat as smaller, lighter members of their respective families - and both being proper radial-engined hot-rods 2 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
