J.A.S.D.F. Phantom Open House December 2018

For a number of reasons it has taken me a while to get around to posting these images and although other forums have featured the special schemes from the Hyakuri open house last December I thought I would put my contribution on BM.

I travelled to Japan courtesy of http://www.centreofaviationphotography.com/home and in addition to Hyakuri we visited the Tsuiki open house (images to come) and spent a day at Iruma.

As you can see by the images the weather was changeable. The VIP and families day before the public show was warm with glorious sunshine and blue skies while unfortunately the show day itself was cold and cloudy.

This was the last show for 302 Squadron which disbands in March and it has been announced that 501 Squadron with the RF4Es will disband in a year's time.

If you plan to go then my suggestion is be there early not least because they close the roads around the base. We had booked a coach which gave us a degree of preferential treatment and left the hotel at 4.30am. Some people looked like they had been camping out overnight to be the first in the queue. Bag searches are mandatory and no step ladders or collapsible stools are allowed (unlike at Tsuiki where the stools were allowed). We spent the Saturday VIP day at the towers along with what must have been 100 other enthusiasts and the Sunday inside at the show.

Great shots. They flew a very nice formation.

Shame they are so far away from us Brits. Those JASDF Phantoms are very colourful, would be great to see some. Very envious.

Thank you! It would be a bit of a coup for the RIAT team to get a couple for Fairford but we live in hope!

Phantastic set of pictures!

It would be a miracle if they got one over for RIAT, I imagine the tickets would sell out in minutes!

Thanks for posting them.

Thank you very much for the compliments - glad you enjoyed them!

Those are wonderful pictures! I love the shot of the open hanger. Seems like Phantoms forever! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Nachhtwulf. Every time I tell my wife I need to go to Japan because the Phantoms are being phased out she tells me they seem to be going on forever! We can only hope.

If I remember rightly the open hangar shot was taken at around 4am from the towers.

the open hanger shot does it for me as it is so unusual. Glad you had a good time over in Japan

Thanks Andy. It took me a few goes to get a shot that wasn't blurred and was due to shaking with the cold. I'm quite pleased by how it came out.
