Canberra B(I)8 undercarriage & bay colour

Working on the Airfix 1/48 kit building a 16 squadron machine with the NIGHT undersides.  I seem to recall that in this scheme the bays & legs were also black but photographic confirmation is hard to find.  Those shots I have found seem to show that the insides of the gear doors were aluminium but nothing clear re the legs & bays.  Any advise?.

A quick and dirty web trawl gave me XK951 and XM270 with black bays and door insides, the former has aluminium or Light Aircraft Grey undersides and the latter Night, whilst XM268, also with Night undersides, has aluminium door interiors.  8l00dy Canberras: no two are the same.  As an aside both WE168 (PR. 3) and XH165 (PR. 9) both had Night wheel-and pyrotechnic-bays and door interiors.  From what I remember aluminium is the default leg and wheel colour.  I’m sure that Canberra Kid will be along to put me right if I’m not!

As Steve says Canberra are very tricky to pin down, which 16 Sqn  one are you building? I'll take a look at my photos.

John, looking to build XM268 in the early high-sided black underside scheme.

May I jump into this discussion?

I've dug out my Airfix B(I)8 and the markings supplied are for XM277, as 16 squadron with silver underside and black/yellow roundel band, plus shark mouth.

From what I can find out it was previously in 16 Squadron, transferring from 14 in Jan 72, not long before 16 was disbandment.

I want to paint a Canberra in Grey/Green/Black: from what I read this combination ran until mid 1965. Does anyone have a photo of XM 277 in 14 Squadron markings with a black underside?

Also what were the squadron markings? Is there any photographic evidence?

I wish I knew how to post links using an iPad!  There’s an image of ‘277 on t’interweb with a link to a thread on this very forum.  However she’s shown in the Dark Sea Grey/Dark Green/High Speed Silver camouflage scheme but she has 14’s winged helmet and shield emblem on the wooden section of the fin with the helmet and shield on the upper front fuselage flanked by white bars bearing blue diamonds.  Haven’t yet found an image of her in Intruder colours though.

As an aside I once met a gentleman who’d once flown ‘277.  It was just after the 1/48th scale Airfix B(I)8 had been issued and a friend and I were doing a demo day with our local model club in the LMS.  Although we couldn’t talk for long he did say that WT332, depicted on the Model Alliance transfer sheet with one, did not have the shark’s mouth markings.

John,

many thanks indeed.  Now I need to work out how to get the 14 Squadron badge for the nose and tail...

I do like the high demarcation black/green/grey with big white serial numbers!

Any thoughts, anyone? I

can produce the chequer board I think, but the badge, a winged St Georges Cross, I'd prefer to have as a transfer...

No problems Peter, I feel the same way about the early camouflage, I really must get around to building one some day!
