At the Mountains of Madness - F I N I S H E D ! ! !

Big milestone reached today! I've finished getting the snow & ice in place, all that's left to do is add the various props and such.

Here's the base after I added the snow. The Tri-motor is there just for show.

After the snow had had a chance to set up, I added trail marks for the airplane's skis and a set of footprints:

The footprints go from the open tent (the one with the empty beer & wine bottles), around the rear of the plane and to the open entry door. Inside the doorway will be one or two cases of booze. Another set of foot prints go from the door, back around the rear, turn toward the tent, and abruptly stop just outside the shoggoth's lair. At that point I'll add a dropped beer case, bottles tumbled onto the snow, and a solitary boot.

Here are a few more photos to entertain you:

Items still to be added:

Sledge

Cargo & oil drums

Fuel pump & hose

Ladder

Skis

Rifles

Booze bottles

Booze crates

Boot

Giant Albino Penguins

Sled Dogs

  • billn53 changed the title to At the Mountains of Madness - Nearly finished!

I spent the morning working on the props, as I listed in my previous post:

The expedition's supplies:

33324945468_f9c1133310_c.jpg

A couple of petrol drums, which I'll have positioned for refueling the Tri-motor, and a dirty crate that will be placed as an improvised step beneath the fuselage access door:

The above items are resin pieces from Value Gear, all I had to do was some painting, decaling, and weathering.

Below are my beer crates & bottles. The bottles are from Shapeways, the crates I scratch-built from styrene stock. Mind you, these are 1/72 scale so they are quite small:

Next up: I'll try scratch-building a sledge. I'll use this example, which was used for Antarctic exploration in the same timeframe as my diorama, for guidance:

More excellent work! I like the dancing penguins at the bottom of your post - I suppose you couldn't find any dancing Shoggoths. Now let's see about a slogan for that Innsmouth Pale Ale - 'For an out-of-this world experience!'.

Regards,

I spent all of yesterday evening and a few more hours tonight building a sledge, using the photo above as my guide. First, I drew a scale plan on my computer and printed it out:

Here are a couple of pics with construction underway:

And the finished sledge:

I should add a couple of ropes, but I'm calling this mini-project done! Here are a few more pics for your enjoyment...

I've been tweaking the snow effects:

Gluing various items in place, such as the crate/step below the passenger entrance, and expedition's supplies:

Finally, I think I've settled on where to put my mutant albino penguins:

Till next time, happy modeling!

Somewhere the other side of fabulous, (and a little bit frightening).

I now have to read BM from the safe spot behind a cushion!

One of these cushions perhaps?

What an indescribably eldritch and phantasmagorical cushion! I feel my sanity draining away at the very sight of such an unearthly creation!

I must obtain an example of this merchandise!

Just do a google for 'Shoggoth plush'. But brace yourself - some things in this world are best left not seen.

I do like that Shoggoth cushion 👍

I had originally intended to hold off on posting any more photos until I'm done (which should be tomorrow, knock on wood). But I just realized that I've not posted since Tuesday, and since I'm here . . .

Let me start with something unexciting: the back of my diorama.  Today I wired the LED lighting and battery pack, then finished off the backside of the wall to tidy everything up. Here's how it looked earlier in my build:

And now, with additional foamboard in place. (The recess in the side is for the battery pack):

47209560462_95fe6d8e97_c.jpg

The lighting consists of a green LED in the shoggoth lair (which you've seen before), and a flickering yellow LED in the tent:

46346869915_fae85aa89d_z.jpg  47261406581_207f795cd5_z.jpg

Here's everything else I've been up to these past few days:

I gave the sledge a light dusting of snow, and added a set of PE skis to the expedition supplies:

40296742553_e83ba2edd1_c.jpg

I also scratch built a hand pump for the petrol drums, and arranged them just forward of where the the starboard wing will be:

32319605337_7abd7806bd_z.jpg

I added a crate of empty beer bottles outside the tent:

40296742843_312cdd8766_z.jpg

and another crate, beside the footprints heading from the plane back to the tent, that's been dropped:

46537858304_aae793312a_z.jpg

The footprints end near the dropped crate, and close by is a lone boot, within easy tentacle's reach of the shoggoth lair:

33385667058_487403197d_z.jpg

On the opposite side of the diorama, a pair of sled dogs are defending the camp from some very strange intruders:

47261405931_d1d6b1234c_z.jpg  46346870015_eb2fa6b75c_z.jpg

That's just about everything. All that's left for me to do is finish up with the backside, and then glue in place the dogs and mutant penguins. Everything else is ready to go!

Stay tune for my RFI, and remember, you saw it here first :penguin::penguin::penguin:

It's brilliant. The attention to detail (bottles, skis, fuel pump etc) are so good, and I have to constantly remind myself that this is 1/72. Bravo sir, this is an exceptional piece of modelling.

You have probably mentioned before, but where on earth did you source p/e skis and the beer crates (and contents) in 1/72?

Amazing.

I do have a couple of Cthulhu plushies - here is one getting friendly with my Space:1999 Eagle kit from a while back

PS: Love the lighting effects in the SHoggoth lair and tent, really makes it atmospheric... looking forward to seeing this complete!

PPS: here is the shoggoth cushion - at $60 I think someone is taking the eldritch!

The photoetch skis are by Hauler Models (I found them on eBay). The bottles are 3D printed by Shapeways, the beer crates and Lovecraft Brewing Co, etc. markings I did myself.
