Plumbum
I just ordered this kit. It is the same kit Hasegawa does for the USAF F-4E slatted wing BUT it has different wings, unslatted, and a different insert for the fuselage spine. It is for an F-4EJ Japanese JSDF plane. Put Vietnam era decals and you have a cheap and easy early unslatted F-4E. Not perfect but it works. This isn't the newer mold F-4EJ with the 4 piece fuselage, this is the older kit with the 2 piece fuselage and sparser cockpit. I may see whats in my spares box to improve it a bit.---John
neil5208
Looking forward to see what you do with the 'sparse' cockpit, as I have the F4e boxing in the stash
busnproplinerfan
Are there newer better Hasegawa kits of the F-4?
Plumbum
Yes, I am frugal and $7 is a deal to me. Plus I don't mind the scratch building, gives me something to do and keep my creativity flowing.---John
Gondor44
Hope you don't mind my following this build to see what you do with this kit. Gondor
Plumbum
I don't mind at all. I ordered it from Plaza Japan for $7 and $7 shipping. A far cry from $30 for the newer deluxe mold Hasegawa but I have been doing a lot of scratch building so it'll be a good subject to work on. I have ordered from Plaza Japan before and have had no issues so far, usually it takes 8 days from when they say it's shipped to get to the U.S. from Japan. Not bad at all for economy shipping. I am thinking it should be here by the end of next week or the beginning of the next. Feel free to tag along and throw in your 2 cents worth for advice.---John
Plumbum
The kit arrived today. I will start with my ceremonial wash then see what I need to spruce up the cockpit. I won't really get this going until I finish my F-4C Vietnam Phantom. I already have too many "irons in the oven".---John
Plumbum
This is the scheme I am looking for, 1972 Korat Thailand. I like the tail code, my initials.---John
Plumbum
I started gathering up after market items to help improve this build. First and foremost is weapons, Hasegawa Weapons Set III has the proper Sidewinder and Sparrow missiles plus the correct Sidewinder dual launchers. I will be scratch building odds and ends for the cockpit such as control sticks, face curtain pulls and a few boxes and switches. I have an ALQ-87 pod from a Monogram kit.---John
Nikolay Polyakov
Hello John! 🤝 I love the Hasegawa kits, you’re bought the right ones. I’m in - it would be nice to seeing your build! Cheers! 🙃
Plumbum
I started some cockpit work. I took the kit seats and painted them. Then I made the loops for the face curtain pulls for the top of the seat and painted them. Next I will fashion some seat belts.---John
Plumbum
I make the loops from thin copper wire. I need another set. I have made seat belts from Tamiya tape, is there a better material? Gum wrapper foil maybe ? I would like them thin.---John
Plumbum
I added belts to the seat, I still want to add the ejection handle to the right arm rest. I have also started detail painting the cockpit side consoles. I need to add the sticks and 2 more panels on the pilots consoles that angle up to the instrument panel.---John
Plumbum
I have the seats almost done and installed. I also added the pilot's stick and side console extensions, need to add switches and knobs to them. I still need to paint and detail the front and rear instrument panels and scratch build a rear control stick.---John
VT Red Sox Fan
Great start--I am toying with doing the exact same thing--your build will be very helpful--thanks for posting 🙂
Plumbum
Thanks, I put some lead in the nose, not sure if it really needs it, then added the cockpit and closed up the fuselage. I started sanding, so far I only have the top of the nose done.---John
Plumbum
I have the canopy on and am starting the intakes. Horrible ejector pin marks! How far down the inside of the intakes does the camoflage color go?---John
Plumbum
Intakes on and sanded, wing bottom on and puttied.---John
Nikolay Polyakov
Nice work with a cockpit, John - I think it’s more than enough for this kit! 👍 On 09/03/2019 at 19:20, Johnv said: How far down the inside of the intakes does the camoflage color go? Plumbum
Thanks, wings on and intakes and wings have been puttied and all sanded up. Almost ready to start masking for paint.---John
Plumbum
The Golden Hawks Sabre is almost done and I am waiting on decals so I can restart this one. I have everything except the ALQ-87 pod. I used the one I had for an F-4C Phantom. I just glued up the fuel tanks.---John
Plumbum
I sanded the fuel tanks then added the sidewinder dual rails from my Hasegawa weapons set to the kit's inner wing pylons. The weapons set also has the Aim 9E missiles I need.---John
Plumbum
The Aim 9E missiles. I am doing Ed Rasimus's F-4E from Korat Thailand in 1972. In his book Palace Cobra in chapter 5 he states his MIGCAP load. It was 3 fuel tanks, 4Aim 9s on inboard pylons, 3 Aim 7Es in the fuselage wells and and ECM pod in the left front missile well. I am doing his plane "Arnold"-the pig, Serial number 69-7267. "Arnold" is in the image below just above and to the left of 551 on the tanker.---John
