It's only taken me about 5 months to build, but here's my attempt at Airfix's ancient Westland Whirlwind, part of my Westland Trio series :)

It needed a lot of work doing, I scratch built some detail for the rotorhead and tail rotor, as well as added some pilot/passenger steps from wire, I also added little details such as torque links on the front undercarriage and a new exhaust.

The model isn't particularly technically or historically accurate, but it looks good by my Speed Lynx!

I have yet to decide whether to take these to work - however, as my office is just above the hangar in which the fixed-wing Whirlwind was built, I think I might make myself one of those!

Cheers,

Ben

Looks great ben.....your hangar is that the Wildcat and Super lynx build shed?

Nearby! I didn't actually realise the Wildcat hangars were wartime hangars - I'm still finding out new things about the site (there's various plaques on walls telling the history of the site), not sure what was in there...

That looks very nice from an ...errr... “challenging” kit!

To say the least, the hardest parts were the windows not fitting at all.

Lucky you got windows. The early issues of that kit 'BEA' markings, there was no glazing at all.

It had holes though ISTR

Lovely Whirlwind Ben, I've a H19 to build for a Korean War build soon

Might base it on the Airfix one, you make it an attractive proposition

Looks great.  Wish Airfix would re - issue it. Or even better new tool.

That's a fine looking Whirlwind.

I don't think that the venerable old Airfix kit has ever looked so good.

A new tool Whirlwind would be great, my choice would be an HAR.10. would be lovely if Airfix could do a themed yellow SAR trio box: Whirlwind, Wessex and Sea King. How about it Airfix?

Cheers :D I think it turned out ok for a 60 year old kit.

That WOULD be excellent! Hopefully they'll be a SAR Sea King flying with the Whirlwind and Wessex, not far from me in Crewkerne!

I just love these old Airfix models! Your Whirlwind looks great.

I built one of these when I barely knew what words like "green", "white" or "glue" meant (a loooong time ago that is).

Kind Regards,

Antti

You've done an excellent job on that!

Always great to see an old "classic" making an appearance.

I love the bright colours too.
