Marlin
Hi, This is going to be fun, even if I had decided not to start anything new before my work assignment in Tallinn. I'm about to start on Zvezdas brand new Yak-130 in 1/48 A content of the box can be found here: https://karopka.ru/community/user/18655/?MODEL=530754 The plastic looks fantastic, and the decals are from Begemot and they inclued stencil in russian and english. I've bought two kits and I'm going to do one Russian and one Algerian, like this. I think I'll arm them like this: Russian: 2 X jaming pods, 2 x R73 air to air missile, 2 x B13 rocket pods and 2 x droptanks. Aleria: 2 X jaming pods, 2 x R73 air to air missile, 4 x BM8 rocket pods and gun pod. Right now I'm work, but when I'm done here and the weekly grocceries have been bought I'll rip the bags open and start building. To be continued..... /Bosse

Marlin
Thanks Werner. With my work schedule at the moment I don't think I'll be able to participate in another GB. So I'll build them at my own pace. If I can find a hobby shop in Tallinn that sells Zvezda kits I might pick up a second pair of mittens. /Bosse
Marlin
Okay, So I've started it now.001 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr First a pair of B13 rocket pods.002 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Then a pair of R73's A2A missiles.003 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Droptanks and jamming pods.004 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Followed by the ejection seats.005 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I really like Zvezdas ingenious design. If you like to mount the crew, you dont add the backpad and cushion with the belts. If you'd like the cockpit empty add the backpad and cushion. I've also primed a lot of parts that I'll show you later. To be continued..... /Bosse
jet-mech
Watching this with interest. The only other yak build I've seen other than my own!

amblypygid
I'll be following your build, Bosse. I'm particularly keen on seeing the Algerian machine take shape.
Marlin
Welcome aboard Chris, The Algerian one will be the second of them. I'll build the Russian first. I'll start on the Algerian when the Russian is more built up. /Bosse
Marlin
Hi, Here's a midday update. I'm currently building the cockpit.006 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr007 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr008 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And, what has become my new normal, I'm using AKAN acrylics. The cockpit is painted in Sukhoi BlueGrey. I've also started on the intakes.009 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr010 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The fan fronts has been given the first coat of "Very Bright Aluminum" To be continued..... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi, I did manage to get some more work done yesterday. I'm almost done with the intake/wheel wells.011 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr012 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I really like how Zvezda has engineered this kit, the parts just click in place and all ejection pin marks are where they'll not be seen. I've also started to paint some external part, like the weapons pylons, and the tail planes.013 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr015 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And I discovered the I used the wrong colour in the cockpit.014 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr It's only the side consols, some other boxes and the IP's that are Sukhoi bluegrey, the rest is Medium Sea Grey. With that said, I'm rather please with the progress made with half a saturday, and a whole sunday at the bench. Marlin
Hi, I've done some more work on my Russian Mitten. The cockpit is done.016 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr017 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr018 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr019 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr After the cockpit was completed I built up the nose gear and glued the front fuselage halves together.020 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The nose gear has to go in at this stage due to the construction of the wheel bay. The sidewalls locks the gear in place, and it's not possible to do at a later stage. I then continued with the internal parts; intake, main landing gear bays and exhausts.021 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Be carefull to get the mid bulkhead in the right place, I didn't and had to re-do some work. 022 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I also had to do some more painting in the secondary air inlets. 023 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr024 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr You can still see the fans, but they'll soon disappear behind the FOD guards. To be continued..... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi. I've been too busy at work to be able to work on my Mittens as much as I'd like. But I've managed to make some small work. Yesterday I fitted one of the main landing gears.025 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr026 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr027 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Zvezda's plastic melts real easy with Tamiya Extra Thin, so don't use too much at once. And when the glue dries one has to check that all angles on the parts stays correct. I hope to have the second gear in place this evening, and then do some detail painting on them. ProfSparks
Hi Bosse, can you tell me where you got these clamps please? On 2/4/2019 at 10:54 AM, Marlin said: 020 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Cheers Steve
Marlin
Hi Steve, The first pair I bought eon's ago here in Sweden. When I wanted some more they were gone. Then some years ago I found them at https://www.expotools.com/acatalog/Clamps.html but they don't seem to stock them any longer. Google Mini F clamps and go to images. I just did and found some links. HTH /Bosse
Marlin
Hi. I've finished all internal bit on this bird now. 028 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr029 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And now it's time to marry it to the fuselage.030 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr031 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr032 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr In order to get good strong seams I've only glued one half to the internal bits yet. I'll do the second half this evening. Then I'll have some puttying and sanding to do on the underside of the intakes and where the bulkhead meets the intakes. When that's done I'll glue the nose section to the fuselage. And if I've got the time I'll get the wings on during the weekend. To be continued..... /Bosse

Marlin
Thanks Werner. It's really is a lovely kit. /Bosse
jet-mech
I can see already that the zvezda kit has so much more detail than the Kitty Hawk production. However, I prefer the cockpit in the KH kit apart from the bang seats as they modelled them completely wrong. I like the addition of pneumatic ducting to the zvezda MLG bay. Maybe the best way to build a good representation of the mitten is to cross the 2 kits
Marlin
Thanks jet-mech. I can agree that Zvezdas cockpit could have a little more detailed. I'm sure we will soon see some aftermarket parts catering to that. Not much have been done over the weekend that I'd have liked. I've got the bottom part in place.033 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And I've got a bad step that I'll have to take care of during the week.034 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I have to blame my self, and the instructions, for this. I couldn't read in the instructions exactly how the bulkhead at the front were to be glued. Obviously I got it wrong and now have a sanding & putty session in front of me. We'll see If I can get it right on the next one. To be continued..... /Bosse
exdraken
construction looks a bit complicated indeed! KittyHawk serving as the (bad) example?? I am sure you will manage!

Marlin
Hi Just a quikie, I've cleaned up most of the seams035 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I think I'll cut a small wedge shaped plasticard strip and use that to fill the area between the nose section and the intake. To be continued..... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi. I've now mated the nose section to the fuselage.036 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr037 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr038 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The gaps between the intake have been filled with some PPP039 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And then I just had to dryfit the wings.040 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I think it looks great. Marlin
Hi. Here's another quikie. I'm working on the secondary intakes. Aft of the FOD guard door there are seven louvre door on the topside of the fuselage. These contraptions has to be glued on the inside of the wing section.041 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr042 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr So I now have to paint the outer side of the doors with the aircraft camo colours, and the inner side have to white. So I guess it'll take some more days before I can glue the wings on. This kit has really a strange construction order, it's like putting an onion back together after you've peeled it. Marlin
Hi. Yet another quikie. Yesterday I got the exhausts heat shields and covers on.043 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr044 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The heat shields are ment to be bent slightly and then pressed in place under the exhaust. Don't forget to clamp them in place while the glue set. To be continued..... /Bosse
