++++ Hawker's Last and First -FINISHED++++

Recommended Posts

Alongside my Supermarine build I've started a parallel Hawker build. The FAA's last Hawker built piston engined fighter was the Sea Fury and first jet the Seahawk. So the build will be the Trumpter Sea Fury

The Sea Fury gives a number of options. Korea is one but that's outside the GB. I like the 1831 Squadron aircraft with the exercise bands.

I've had this in the stash for some time and had painted the interior and little parts.

The Seahawk is nicely moulded and has its constituent parts in individual bags.

A range of options including an Indian Navy. My choice will be the late 50s Extra Dark Sea Grey over White livery of 806 Squadron NAS from HMS Albion.

Some paint onto the Seahawk.

Started with the jet jet outlets and one of them is flawed. The exhaust end so it can't be hidden.

Another cracking pair up :D That jet-pipe looks as if it'll be a pest to fix though.

Thanks Col. I think I've sorted the jet pipe. First some plastic strip that was rolled to form a curve. It was fixed with generous amounts of Tamiya Extra Thin, then a layer of Perfect Putty put on the inside which was smoothed off with a moist cotton bud.

Cockpit coming together for the Seahawk. Transfers for the instrument panel and consoles. I'll use Tamiya tape for the sear belts on the bang seat.

A fair amount done on the Seahawk today. Upper and lower fuselage sections fitted with the bits and bobs, including the intakes and cockpit. As can be seen, new fairly restrained engraving, a decent cockpit and nice wheel well detail. I've also glued the rear fuselage halves together.

Then inserted the jet pipes and glued the upper and upper and lower parts together. At this point it looks more like a Vampire or Venom derivative rather than a Hawker. I'm part thinking I should be adding twin booms!

I was also worried that the fitting fitting of the rear section would be a nightmare with seams and filling needed in awkward places. This is just it slotted in and it's not at all bad.

Back end on along with tailplanes. Really looks like a Seahawk now. So far has gone together well and the sanding is minimal and there hasn't been a single drop of filler, apart from that used to fix the jet pipe, applied.

There may may be a need to do something here, but this is very magnified and I might get away with a smear of Perfect Putty.

There will an interregnum for the next couple of weeks as I am off to Scotland for the first two games of the Six Nations rugby and SWMBO is a tad averse to me taking modelling materials with me.

Amazing how fast this kit comes together... trap a few things between the top and bottom 'arf and whack on the tail.  Looking good!

Thanks, the Seahawk is a nice kit, well moulded and goes together pretty easily

Back from a sojourn in Scotland and the North West and back on board. The Sea Fury is now a collection of sub assemblies although the dark cockpit looks like it will be a dark hole.  I'll dry brush some Aluminium on it before closing up. I'll add in some Tamiya tape seat belts as well. Also the undercarriage bay could do with some murkying up with Tamiya Smoke. As will the Seahawk. You can't see but the cowling join, which is on the sides rather than top and bottom, will need a little tidy up.

The joins on the Seahawk have been tidied up and a little bit of filler was needed. But less than expected.

And a coat of white white on the underside. Citadel's Ceramite White brushed on. I think I'll thin it a little further as it's drying a little quick.

Seahawk has a coat of Citadel white on the underside. A few more needed and then a couple of coats of Kleer.

Sea Fury cockpit given a dry brush over with some Revell Aluminium which has lifted out the detail.

Closed up and inner wings added.

Fit pretty good but a little gap at the rear of the wings. And there's a couple of moulding dimples on the underside of the wing root as well.

As you said Col. a bit of filler and sanding has sorted out the Sea Fury.

Now to get the outer wings on

The Seahawk underside is finished, it looks a bit bland but that's a combination of the fine engraving which is there (honest) and my decision to photograph it in natural sunlight. I think my iPad prefers artificial light. Once the transfers are on, I'll give it a light wash to bring the details out.

The outer wings are now on. This was a lot more challenging than expected. There is a tab to insert that should help locate and fix. The fit was good but the plastic seemed unwilling to stick together and one fell off after being glued and taped up for a few hours. Here they are sitting left to dry again

What type of glue are you using?

Are you using a plastic weld type glue or Tamiya extra thin ? Has the glue turned cloudy ? If so ive had that problem before with a bottle of Tamiya. Once they turn cloudy they lose the ability to perfectly weld/bond. Not sure if its contamination, or if its possibly an age thing ? Maybe one of the chemicals evaporates over time, and the warning sign is cloudiness.

Believe it or not it's Tamiya Extra Thin, which I've used on all the other builds at the moment with no problem. And the rest of the Sea Fury. I think it's the plastic not the cement. The TET is still crystal clear as well.

I have left them for quite a long time now, glued them up Wednesday afternoon, had a day visiting 825 junior in Portsmouth today and as it's late I'll tentatively remove the tape tomorrow morning. If they're still loose I picked up some Mig cement today and use that. By the way Fratton Model shop is a modellers dream and they also have a stunning array of 2nd hand kits. Dozens of Airfix, Revell (both Revell and rebox Matchbox) and Frogspawn as we'll as some original Frog and Matchbox. And a few others. All in addition to a goodly range of new and one of the best ranges of tools and accessories. Well worth using visiting 825 junior as an excuse.

Leaving the wings to dry off seems to have worked. A little bit of tidying up was needed to remove glue marks but not a particularly onerous job.

Ready for the paint shop now. As the exhausts need added before the cowling is fixed I'll keep that off until the paint is on.
