Spitfire IXe, RDAF

Recommended Posts

I have a thing for foreign Spitfires and postwar Spitfires, so a postwar Danish Spitfire fits the bill. This will be the Eduard 1/48 IXe, which includes the Danish option which the instructions say is from the 40s-50s so fits the bill for the group build. I haven't built one of Eduard's 1/48 Spits before, I've been looking forward to getting stuck in to this one.

I'd show a photo of the sprues, but Flickr doesn't seem to be playing right now. Don't have any progress to show anyway, so will post an update when I've got cracking.

Welcome to the GB with this one Z. The relative simplicity of Danish markings have always suited the Spitfire's lines in my opinion so I'm looking forward to watching this one

Time to crack on. Cockpit has gone together very quickly. This is a very, very nice kit, if a little fiddly. I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be a pretty quick build

A bit more progress:

Still pretty straightforward. The kit is very well engineered. There are a few places where there are more parts than you'd expect - the top of the cowl which comes in two pieces where most manufacturers would use one, for example, also the exhausts which require assembly of 4 parts each side and can only be installed before the top of the cowl, whereas others (eg Airfix) would use a single exhaust piece that would slot in after assembly (which would be my preference, would prefer to paint the exhausts when they're not attached). But these are minor gripes. It's a lovely kit and I can certainly see myself buying more of them.

It's been about 6 weeks since my last post in this build but got back onto it this week and got it painted. Paints are Mr Paint - I like the brand on the whole, but I'm not convinced by the dark green this time - it's a little bit brown. I'll live with it for this build.

I'm sure the brown tinge will give a slight 'faded in the sun with age' look to it :)

Actually it looks a bit more green in natural light. I don't think I'll use the Mr Paint dark green again, but I'm happy enough with it for this build.

Decals mostly done. Have to say I like the look of the Spit in Danish markings. The Eduard decals worked very nicely - they look painted on, micro sol did a great job of bedding them down into the panel lines.

Finished. More photos in the gallery shortly.

That's it from me for this GB. Time to focus on my two builds in the trainers GB, and maybe something for the specialists.

thanks for looking
